Definitely the best version- shouldn't have softened it. You can feel her every emotion- her rage and pain- in her every word. True Stevie: authentic, raw, powerful and beautiful! Don't piss this woman off!
This is a much better version! Wow! I didn't realize this was an older song. The raw emotion makes it so much better! She's actually going through it in that moment and it makes a huge difference in how she's singing it!
Go on, save yourself… Leave the key here Well, you love someone else… And I shouldn’t be here Well, don’t ask me why… My walls are flamin’… She’s so willing, little one… I won’t be staying… I have come to know This world of changing faces But I can’t change the world And I can’t face it So be true to me… My walls are flamin’… If you’re so willing, little one…. Then I can’t be staying… What you did not need Was a woman that was stronger Well, you needed someone To depend on you… Well, I could not be her, baby… I did not want to But my first mistake… Was to smile at you… And now you feel the light You run from the darkness… Well, you never saw the change… That woman’s softness… So you be true to me Yeah, what love was stolen… And there was nothing more Than that your heart was broken… Oh, I was flamin’… I could not see the light… I would not, yeah… Flamin’…flamin’…flamin’…flamin’… Yeah…yeah… What you did not need Was a lady who was stronger… What you need is someone To depend on you… Well, I could not be her, baby… I did not want to My first mistake was to smile at you… Oh… Flame… So be true to me… What love was stolen And there was nothing more… Than that your heart was broken… My heart was broken Fly… Well, to your castle in the sky… Ooh, don’t see the change… Flamin’…
Definitely sounds clearer...love it with the speed changed too. I feel like it lets the emotions out at a nice tempo rather than rushed through in other versions I've heard.
It's amazing what lowering it by -0.23 semitones does. I was able to play right along on my keyboard. Wasn't able to do that before. Was all out of tune!
what you did not need was a woman who was stronger, you needed someone to depend on you, well I could not be her baby, I did not want to, My first mistake was to smile at you...
Sounds so much better "in tune" lol ALL of the other ones here on UA-cam were off pitch because they are sped up from circulation in the fan community.
Stevie is the Greatest Singer🎵 🎶 🎵 🎶 🎵 Songwriter of all time. Her music is classic and priceless.💗 Love her Band. And her 50 years in Fleetwood Mac: Truly the Greatest Band in History!💜💙❤💗💚
I feel like this take might tie in with the story Stevie told about presenting Lindsey with a signed copy of Bella Donna that she dedicated to him, which he just left sitting there and didn't accept. I feel like it was such a slap in the face to her. Is it true he was jealous of Dreams being the top single from Rumours and that just snowballed further when she did Bella Donna and it became such a huge hit?
Seems on brand for him. The fact that she wrote the band’s only #1 hit, she’s been inducted into the RRHoF twice, and that she was the only songwriter from FM included in RS’s list of 100 greatest songwriters of all time might all make him envious and angry.
This song was written and first recorded long before Belladonna was recorded. It was first recorded during the Tusk time. So if it were about Buckingham it would not be because he rejected Belladonna which wasn't dedicated to him anyway.
So, Jeremy , is this demo obtainable in CD form etc? I just love this song, it is up there w/ : Gold dust woman, Sister of the Moon, and the demo ' No Light' my favorites...... I wish , hope & pray Stevie puts her demos on a cd and does some dvd concert vintage 70's , 80's music.. so good!
I have always hoped for the same thing. Her demos are often sonically better than the expensively crafted and mastered versions that ultimately make it to the final pressing. Somewhere I heard that demos cannot be packaged for sale unless all the credits and compensation in some form or permission are given to the personnel involved with the original demo. If this is true I suspect it is why demos seldom or do not make it to the commercial market. Thankfully streaming has made that unnecessary.
I believe she took Smile At You, Think About It (with the castanets), If You Ever Did Believe and possibly a couple of other songs to Fleetwood Mac.. already recorded as demos with her put together band, in 1978, for possible additions to Tusk.
@@GothicTrunk This SO should have graced Tusk. This was the Rock epic Stevie tune that was missing from the double album. Plus, the anger from Don's transgression was still fresh, in 1978.
I was so excited when I heard this was gonna be on SYW, until I heard what he did to it..... I don't think I have ever felt this way about any other song, but Lindsey RUINED this for SYW.
I agree completely and believe that Lindsey over worked all of Stevie's songs on SYW . The way her voice is manipulated throughout the record sounds awful and is a crime. I'd rather hear her voice horse and raw than to be tweaked that it sounds as if is constantly being played at an incorrect speed. You'll rot for that Lindsey and Stevie :you should have put your foot down defending your vocals just as firmly as you did your lyrics." Smile at You " and "Running Through the Garden" should have been Stevie's powerhouse songs with her trademark wailing vocals, but instead were over produced ,tinny shadows of what should have been.
Lindsey has done many things that have been big letdowns for their albums, Smile at You and If You We’re My Love were two amazing songs from Stevie, but Lindsey just left them off their respected albums. Leaving those albums being pretty underwhelming. He’s definitely got something against her for doing shit like this.
@@DraperStan23 It seems like they wanted Mirage to be a sunny, mellow superficial album because they were disappointed with sales of Tusk after Rumors. So that's what they got. I don't know that it a singlehanded Lindsey conspiracy. But it put commercialism over art. Hold Me was a big hit, but it's not really remembered as a great FM song. Gypsy is the loved song. Eyes of the World is pretty cool too. But a lot of Mirage is just forgettable.

Exactly what I've always thought!!
I LOVE THIS SONG. The vocals really are raw and expressive. Cannot get enough of this.
"when my first mistake was to

Best. Version. Ever. Period.
Go on, save yourself…

Well, I could not be her, baby…
I did not want to
But my first mistake…
Was to smile at you…
And now you feel the light
You run from the darkness…
Well, you never saw the change…
That woman’s softness…
So you be true to me
Yeah, what love was stolen…
And there was nothing more
Than that your heart was broken…
Oh, I was flamin’…
I could not see the light…
I would not, yeah…
Flamin’…flamin’…flamin’…flamin’…
Yeah…yeah…
What you did not need
Was a lady who was stronger…
What you need is someone
To depend on you…
Well, I could not be her, baby…
I did not want to
My first mistake was to smile at you…
Oh…
Flame…
So be true to me…
What love was stolen
And there was nothing more…
Than that your heart was broken…
My heart was broken
Fly…
Well, to your castle in the sky…
Ooh, don’t see the change…
Flamin’…
Thank you for the lyrics.
The most poignant version

Thank you for your efforts. The guitar part is insanely good in this version.
Man this is so much better than the other version. The other one is good too, but this just fits better.
Perfect picture,
Indeed
Brilliant version!
Can't get any better than Stevie Nicks
BEST VERSION OF ALL!!!
Picked the right photo for this. She's not havin' it.....
Haha for real
I can spot an influence of Tubular bells
My walls were flaming, flaming, flaming

@@Pathfinder197 Probably is. I think he was always jealous of her.
She never "dedicated" it to him. And this song has always been rumoured to be about Henley

Maybe he was still upset about her sleeping with Mick
This song should’ve been on Mirage. Would made the album 10x better.

From what I remember, Lindsey played his guitar parts through only once and refused to play beyond that because he was so p***ed off over the song.
I thought this song was from Buckingham Nicks era. I could be wrong.
She wrote it around 78 maybe 76
This might sound stupid, but by light enhancement, do you mean you did a light amount of work, or enhanced the "lightness?"
I just did light equalizing. Nothing over the top. The speed had to go down a bit. I tuned it using my keyboard (instrument).
