Kelly and Leah discuss apraxia, which is a motor/speech coordination disorder that results in a person not being able to create words.
At Therapy Playground, the treatment technique we use is the Nancy Kaufman approach with the "Kaufman Cards". This podcast will show what the cards look like and how they are used.
The front of the card has a picture, and the back of the card has the word broken down in a bottom up approach to sound out the word.
This allows the child to build up to saying the word properly. This can be done by the therapist or the parent at home with their child.
Apraxia therapy can take many years, possibly most of their school years. Some children are intelligible but have issues with multi-syllabic words.
Many of our "home visits" are also children with apraxia, which can be the most difficult environment to work with because when they are in their own environment they want to run around and play. With the Kaufman approaching being so repetitive, there are a lot of drills and structure during therapy that is needed.
Although it can also be more difficult to treat younger children with this disorder, it is important to get the child into therapy as soon as possible.

Is there a specific reason the set of flashcards is so outrageously expensive?

Don't really know for sure, but Northern Speech Services could probably answer that. We're a speech clinic that uses the cards, wish they weren't as expensive too!

Same. Thanks for the quick reply. My granddaughter has not been diagnosed with apraxia but I believe she likely does have it. At one point she was saying several words easily, then it was gone. She's 2.5 now and has lost everything, but you can see she struggles very hard to form words. We just started seeing a Pediatric Neurologist and are hoping for more guidance in this area. I plan on asking for a referral to a SLP at her appointment on Friday. Thanks again!

I have son with aproxia of speech. He is 4.7 years old . He knows more than 30 words. Do you think bowling with he is taking to achieve his goal?

Children with apraxia can understand more words than they can speak. The goal of the Kaufman program is to help the child produce approximations of words - so people is pepo initially. You work up to people after a few weeks of training. Children with apraxia should receive speech therapy 2 - 4 times a week because they need constant repetition to learn how to make the sounds. Parents should also be given homework to help the child learn the sound combinations being worked on. Good luck to you!
