  • While on our tour of Bali, Indonesia, we stopped at Taman Festival, an abandoned amusement park to look for snakes, lizards, pythons, monitor lizards, and other reptiles, and man, this place did not disappoint! Like a scene from Jurassic World, the park is home to crumbling buildings, statues wrapped in vines and the swampy remains of an old crocodile pit!

The title of Wolf Snake comes from the fact that their front (maxillary and mandibular) teeth are quite large and reminiscent of the fang-like canines of a wolf.
The word Lycodon, the genus to which these snakes belong to, originates from the Greek words ‘Lycos’ meaning wolf and ‘odon’ meaning tooth.

  • @ellewebb8671

Love watching your videos, thank for producing them! The New Latin name Lycodon is derived from the Greek words λύκος (lykos) meaning wolf and οδόν (odon) meaning tooth, and refers to the fang-like anterior maxillary and mandibular teeth.

The African Snake Bite Institute says the Lycophidion capense, common name "wolf snake," gets its name from them having long, recurved teeth in both the upper and lower jaws.

I had thought Boiga cynodon got its name from the same source as Lycodon: its actual teeth.
On the note of teeth: I found a shed one from my retic and have saved it now to demonstrate to people why they commend so much respect. Mine can't be much convinced to bite (at least once she's been convinced it's not actually always feeding time), but those knife edges on that dentition are no joke.

This is a little known fact but the name wolf snake actually comes from the fact that these snakes are a species of wolf. The reason that these wolves look like snakes is just convergent evolution. Occasionally you will see them howling at the moon and hunting in packs.
