Paul Howard Fluting/Router Jig 13 - A Latticework Rimmed Bowl in Iroko

  • This is my 13th video following my learning experience with the Paul Howard Fluting/Router jig. William Hunt Woodturner. A more complex project with 60 flutes at 5mm thick, to complement to 5mm annular grooves on the reverse. Initially I finished the bowl in melamine lacquer, but stripped it off in favour of Hampshire Sheen microcrystaline wax as the lacquer looked too bright and artificial.
    Ive never turned Iroko before but I was pleased how it cut and finished, but there was a tendency to splinter a little under the router, or it may have been bad handling on my part.
    I used a 5mm straight, twin flute router cutter which worked well for this project giving an almost equal spacing for the fluting and web in between.
    Not a perfect piece, but good enough to pass muster.
    Paul Howard’s Fluting Jig is an amazing addition to the woodturners tool kit and opens up all kinds of new turning opportunities.

    I made a jig like this for my full size Dewalt router from scraps around the garage. Made a register plate from plexiglass. I have made four of these types of bowls. It's a lot of fun to do but it can get a little fiddly to get all the nooks and crannies looking good.

      That's what I do before I take any thing to the gallery's. I would hate for it to crack, when they have spent good money on it.

      @WilliamHuntLatheCraft  6 років тому

      Thanks Paul, not quite 100%, the annular grooves on the reverse not quite even but I think only a turner would notice. I have a 120 flute project mapped at 3mm intervals with a 3mm cutter and 115mm radius, so it will need to be a rimmed platter or bowl. Any suggestions regarding timber selection?

    Very nice work and a wonderful way to use a router. The last time I used Iroko was in the '70's and I worked in a boatbuilders who built wooden boats and we used Iroko for the frame laminations. (I wasn't one of the real workers, I just produced the drawings for them to build the boat.) P.S: Love the humour and look forward to many more visits to your channel.

      Thanks Roger. Yes, 120 a challenge but I just saw with 180, using a gearbox cog as an index plate, that both awesome and depressing!

      Yes the jig is great but requires some careful thought and practice. The spreadsheet I developed helps planning a lot and has been used by over 130 turners. Free when you get your jig.

    It's all about inspiration isn't it? I get so much of that from watching youtube videos AND just because your craft is different to mine does not mean I don't get inspiration! I really do. This is only the second one of your videos I've watched so far but will keep a keen eye open for what's to come. By the way, I used to live in Bromyard !!!!

    Great piece and video William. Can you expand on how you did rim repairs?

    • @WilliamHuntLatheCraft
      @WilliamHuntLatheCraft  6 років тому

      Yes Nick, There was a large chip came off which I just used CA to put is back, run the router over it again, sanded the sealed. There were two minor chips which I did not find so had to use medium CA and dust to infill. I made a little former using electrical tape to hold in whist the CA cured. Had to rub down by hand then seal. Almost invisible except to anoither turner of course!
