- Secret of the Oracle is the 4th episode of the Commander Keen series, developed by id Software in 1991. The whole episode has been released as shareware as part of Commander Keen in Goodbye Galaxy, a mini-series containing two episodes of the full series.
This episode is the first game where the Dopefish appeared, a large green fish with buck teeth. It has been described as "the second-dumbest creature in the universe". Since then, it already made hidden appearances in more than 30 computer games as an in-joke of the PC game industry.
This game has been mentioned in "A Visit to id Software":

My 90's childhood right here. Good. Times.
my italian '90s childhood here too. in Italy we played this MASTERPIECE too!!!
For some reason this was on a random floppy disk in my house with no label when I was a kid. I've always wondered what game it was and managed to figure it out finally. I had no idea what I was doing when playing this
SPOOPY SPARY Creepyposta confronted
I sometimes think that games like this are gone forever, until I realise that they didn't disappear, and on the right machine you can boot them right up and be a kid again! They never get old, and a part of your childhood comes back as soon as you see that title screen :) Makes you all fuzzy inside :P
It was and still remains one of the best PC games for me. Brings back so many memories! I used to play it so often that my friends called me Keen. :) Thanks for sharing! Still have it and keep showing it to the younger generations! Superb game!
I love the art direction they took with this game. Still has that charm after all these years
Man, I miss the days of these fun little side-scrolling games. Thanks to you (and everyone else who holds on to the glory days) for posting this!
I played it when I was about 3 or 4 years old and loved it back then, barely spoke a word of English so I didn't understand any of the text and my dad just explained me the basics of the game... now I'm 20 and I can remember each of those levels as if I've just played it yesterday. Wonderful. I can even remember the sounds!
*_I remember that!_*
2:52 You've got to eat your vegetables
"NOOOOOOWWWWWWW!"
I WAS LIKE 7 YEARS OLD!!! IM CRYING OF HAPPINESS RIGHT NOW!!! THNXS!! My DAY IS BETTER NOW! ^^
We've been playing the Keen games in black and white, we never used the gun and we loved it!
The most awesome game- ever! Brings back so many memories from when my brothers played it for hours years ago. We still have it!
It's really amazing how much of a breakthrough this game was. Before this, scrolling graphics on a PC were thought to be 100% impossible.
Has to be the greatest forgotten and underrated platformer ever. I loved Commander Keen 4! First DOS game I ever played!
Wow this makes me glad I never had music when I had this game in 1991. I only had sound but I never had a soundblaster card.
I recall the sound being way different since it was only the sounds a PC can produce without a sound card.
Was surprised they actually have them on Steam for $4.99! But unsure if it will just be another Hexen - where I recall a game being way better than actually is once I buy it again and never play after one replay.
This game was an integral part of my childhood. The graphics were sooooo amazing back in the day, and now they are cute funky retro!
People, I can't describe the nostalgia blast this gave. I saw this last time when I played it about more than ten years ago when I was maybe 5 and didn't understand a thing about it. Dopefish was scary as hell by the way!
Me encanta este juego, recuerdo haberlo encontrado en la computadora de mi papá.
i was always constantly fearful of squandering my raygun shots
This is the first game I ever loved. I think I was 6 years old? Will stay with me the rest of my life
I used to call this game Candid King. I was little. When I was older I tried to google it, but couldn't find it until now.
seeing the game again brings teers to my eyes
such good memories playing this games as a kid
ohhhh memories. I used to spend some much time playing this over and over. Love it!
you missed the hidden 10 lives in the first level where the acid pools are
Oh the feels.....
Basically the entire original series of Commander Keen games was published between 1990 and 1991; Super Mario Brothers came out in 1985. The Commander Keen games are some of the best known sidescrollers for the DOS platform, but they're imitations of similar games that had already been out on consoles.
Good Old days, still remember playing this game when i was a kid..
I remember this game being tough as balls. But then again, I wasn't more than 7-8 years when I played it....
was the first ever game i played around 15-16 years ago when i was 2
it was so cool just by pressing a button to let something move on the screen and shoot etc..
man so legendary
Kind of funny to think that this happy and non violent game was created by the same guy that started the extremely bloody FPS games.John Romero is a genius
This game was so amazing..brings back memories of when everything was easy in life..now things blow
Damn one of the very first games I played! ^_^
It's crazy how after so long I still recognized a bunch of hidden areas that he failed to use/find.
this is my all time favorite game, it just has that feel that i think is golden nostalgia
I wasn't able to enjoy these games as a kid, but I sure can respect them!
god how i loved this game
This was easily one of my favorite games back in the day.
Man, I lost count of how many times I've played this game. Id should make a new Keen and release it as DLC on consoles. I would so buy it.

My personal nostalgia is currently off the charts!
I played it in 1993 when I was 05 years, this game is nostalgic.

I always got just past the mirage area . It's been far too long since I've seen this game ^-^ Thank you so much! I lost my video game virginity to this :D
You have succesfully revived my inner five-year-old. Thank you, sir.
One handfull of WIN for you.
This game is legendary, the graphics were great and colorful, the music was well composed and fitted in perfectly with the game, there were ass-loads of levels to play and lots of things to see/secrets to find. I loved it to death.
Oh, and it has fucking Pong, what more could a gamer want?
The three games I played Commander keen, Monkey Island and Wolfenstein. Those were the days.
GODDAMNIT! Did you let the slug out? He just sh!t on the carpet again.
Dude Commander Keen was the bomb! I remember rocking the hell out of this series. I wish they'd make a new version.. I'd love to see how they screw it up!
Commander Keen
Rayman 1
BEST 90's PC GAMES OF MY CHILDHOOD EVER
OMG this brings back good memories. My favorite level was the one shown around 3:45. Absolute best level of ALL TIME.
I also found that Steam carries the entire Commander Keen series and runs it perfectly on XP/Vista computers. I advise getting it on that because it has all 5 episodes of the game.
This is my favorite game of all time wish u could still buy it! So many memories!! :)
WOW i was thinkin about what game this theme came from like the other day, like I just started randomly whistling it, but I couldn't remember where in my memory banks the theme came from. but THANK GOODNESS I FOUND THIS VIDEO cuz it was driving me nuts. Commander Keen! Feel so much better now
In any case, good times. I remember the day I installed this game and just stayed up real late playing it.
Oh my god.... I remember when I had my old pc, and was playing this game....
Such a great time....
Well, going to buy the collection on steam most probably.
Forgot to mention the game is shareware, its completely legal, and encouraged by ID, to download it.
WOW i can't believe how well i remember this...oh the nostalgia
You just transported me back to the 90s with this
Keen defines my childhood and my brother's!
We were the cool kids on the block, who had PC! :D
Aww man, that takes me back! I remember getting to your "Save 04" but I don't recognize the area for Save 05. I don't remember actually beating the game...
I had this on my cpu back in the 90s, this game was AWESOME!!!
you have to eat your vegetables, did you hear me??
I still remember every note of these songs.
i can remember not having had the good sound effects and music at all for most of the time coz my dad's pc didnt have a wavetable-board. all i heard was the crappy sounds from the internal PC-speaker. Still, such a wonderful game it was. I even found the most secret passages myself.
id software are the greatest. Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, and Commander Keen. Legendary games. If id made another Keen I would so buy it
Ah memories. Was such, and still is, an awesome game.
playing it on my dsi, absolutely amazing, even now in 2010
this is by far the most legendary game ever for me :)
The music brings so many memories... 5/5
15 yrs back ...when i was in grade 3 ...damn miss dose dayz
That murshroom scares the shit out of me back in times...
Great game!
hours spent when i was younger playing this.
Yes =S I found it online, just searched for commander keen 4 and a download popped up. I love this game
This game, Chip's Challenge, and Jezz Ball are my childhood!
Has anyone noticed that the ''pink bar'' at the main menu is Billy's wrist? I've played this game since mid 90's and noticed that only while ago. I also thought that the ''Perilous Pit'' at map is some kind of beehive or doghouse, but if you focus correctly you'll find it out as the ''pit''
Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwww i miss this game so much. Bringsback memories....
I played this all throughout my childhood, and still do today!! I hate that fish level...
this game was sooo hard. I was very determined as a child, if I played this now I wouldn't last 10 minutes!
omg i completely forgot about this game.... brings back amazing memories...... i might actually think about buying this for 3 dollars on Steam just for those good old memories to come on back.
wow.. back at those times i was so terrified by the bouncing rocks... they always wait for you to turn your back at them!
now when i look at this i just think - that's one hell of a game to play when you're trippin!!!!
I played the Shareware version of this in 1996 and loved it, great game, I wonder if it will ever get re-released onto a newer platform.
I had all these games. I wanna play them again.
Ahhhhh, how could you kill the friendly ball!!! Oh well... It's my favorite childhood game. I love all the keen games. :D
At 1:26 you can also jump through the roof, there's a secret place which contains 7 life bottles :)
FYI: you don't have to shoot the red ball enemies. I never knew that the first time I played the game, I presumed everything was hostile. :)
Thanks for posting this though, it brings back a lot of memories.
This game was SO COOL! Thanks for sharing!
man i used to love this game when i was a kid :)
woowow I remember when I was 6 -7 I often play this game.
Now I got it on my pc, too I like it =)=)
good old times came back
Haven't played this since I was probably 5 or 6. Don't remember much about it, except that it was awesome. Going to find a good download for it sometime.
i was 3 years old when i used to see my older brother play this game. i loved to watch and i played some times.. i thought that the game had better graphics.. but the game rules at the same.
I just uploaded my own vid of the Dopefish! I grew up with this game and until recently didn't realize how big a following it has, or that the dopefish is so famous.
