Finding a rule from a table of values using a combination of operations - Cool math

👉 How to write the rule of a function given the table of values. To write the rule of a function from the table is somehow tricky but can be made easier by having prior knowledge of the type of function. If the function is a linear function, plugging any two sets of values from the table into the equation y = ax + b, where a and b are constants to be found and x, y are values taken from the table. Solving the two equations obtained simultaneously gives the values of a and b and hence the required rule.
Similarly, if the function is a quadratic equation, plugging any three sets of values from the table into the equation y = ax^2 + bx + c, where a, b, c are constants to be found and x, y are values taken from the table. Solving the three equations obtained simultaneously gives the values of a, b and c and hence the required rule. For tables with no prior knowledge of the type of function, a series of trial and error will lead us to the solution of the problem.

there is a way that always works that isn't guess and check. Basically you look at the y table and see by how much does it move by. So for the first example, the y is moving by positive 2 (because the x is going from bigger to smaller) you have to check the x to make sure that it is moving positively. And then whatever you get. So in the example, you get positive 2 and you multiply that with the x. .And then you add or substract whatever number to make the table true. And it will work for every other one. Hope that made sense.

Excellent video. They are really helping me get back to my roots in mathematics. Increase my efficiency when doing tedious calculations. You plan on getting your master's or doctorate? Another thing, is that I know it's annoying for you when you're trying to explain things, but it is hilarious when teachers call out students in the middle of an explanation when they are not paying attention. Good methods.
