Agreed it’s so frustrating because I can’t deck out the inside of my armory I even tried the auto save trick and all my armor and weapons end up in my cargo it’s so frustrating
And that to be available from the moment you want to buy a ship - also, to be able to see what parts are included in the build, just like you do when you go buy a car.. we only get a "number glimpse", but no actual make and model of the parts.
X-ray mode would be my preference. When you enter an interior in the Creation engine, it has to go through a loading screen, and every change to the ship would require exiting and re-entering the instance. If they could have a simplified 3D X-ray view though, that could be overlaid in the ship builder so you can see how it all connects and how basic furniture items like chairs, workbenches, etc. are arranged. That said, I’d prefer if you could do a “module editor” mode where you can pick which side the door is on, which furniture items are included, and cycle through some different preset layouts.
To touch on your very first statement, "dont let your first attempt at ship building turn you off," I'm over 200 hours in at level 78 and I just now built my first fully custom ship. So yes, come back to it and keep trying. It's fantastic.
Your on level 78. ALREADY. ,,, ,,,!!!!!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 THATS INCREDIBLE. I'm still stuck on level. 1. In this old mining building. trying to kill these guys in space suits,,, on creep. ,,, 😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕
Lander Thrust is 200:1 ratio. 1 thrust for 200 mass. As you level up, I found not so much more powerful engines got unlocks, as you got smaller engines with the same power. When I got to level 57, I was able to retool my massive 9000+ cargo ship from class C to class B and gains mobility cause of the weight savings of the lighter parts. It's like at early level you NEED class C to have a powerful ship, but in later levels you can build class A and B ships that shred.
I sincerely believe Bethesda purposely do not explain most of this stuff in game specifically to spur the community to create videos like this themselves. I appreciate all the insight and very detailed yet simplified explanation of shipbuilding. You just explained how everything worked and tips for building without saying "tHiS iS tHe BeSt DeSiGn EvEr. FiGhT mE!" Kudos
Love the game got like 500 hours in. I totally agree because they skipped on tutorials because they knew creators would fill it in and gives the creator something to do. Unfortunately, I think that discovering the game is discovering how to play the game and not finding new lands to occupy. There’s so much that this came to turn into. I hope it gets there between better discovery better Mabs better building star ports, so much stuff so much possibility. Hope it gets there.
I don't think they did it for the creators. Rather, that one of the strengths of the game is the wide variety of things you can do, and if they put in tutorials for everything, it would get annoying fast. Added to that, the faster drives mean loading is near instant, so no real point to putting tips there, like used to be the standard. And then they probably further justified it by it being more realistic that way, and that players can get to an acceptable level without it (which they can, pretty much, but it can also be very frustrating when a player, for whatever reason, fails to hit that level). But they really should have added a computer in the cockpit of ships, as well as certain homes, that lets you voluntarily check out different things. Like how, for example, space suit resists work, or how much landing gear is needed per X mass. That sort of thing. We shouldn't have to go to an outside the game resource for this. Especially since most casual players will not do that. They'll play the game, and that's that. And while in their previous fantasy games this type of thing could be immersion breaking, here, it wouldn't be. It's the future, which means there should be a space-wikipedia for our characters to access. That there isn't, well, this, as well as the lackluster inventory management system, is probably part of why they had to tune down the effects of hostile environments and the conditions they inflict, because players wouldn't know and couldn't easily adjust to the situation. It's just another example of Bethesda being kind of bad at designing the systems we use to interact with their world-building.
@@Axterix13 Oh I agree. A portion of my comment was in jest, and they can and should have made some early quests that essentially described the systems and how they work. i.e. the ship was damaged in the initial pirate attack and you needed to rebuild it, and as you do your companion/narrator/ship tech describes the basics as you piece your ship back together.
This is such a good video for new players. As someone with about 450 hours in the game, I wish a video with this simple explanation of shipbuilding would have been available way back when I was first starting. Most of the videos I saw went into very complex ways of min-maxing instead of just a simple explanation of some of the basics of the process like this one does. Great video! You get a like and subscribe from me.
@@immasword and I'm only level 75. Granted I played for about 30 hours in my first playthrough and didn't like the skills I had started with and what I was leveling because the descriptions of what the skills actually do was so misleading. So I started over. And my 75 levels were actually earned through missions and side mission. The only crafting I did was what was absolutely necessary in order to build storage units and warehouses. So I didn't use any backdoor methods of leveling. I don't have anything against that, I'm just saying that the only reason I'm only level 75 in this playthrough with 445 hours in game is because I only leveled by doing missions and killing enemies and clearing dungeons/enemy strongholds. I'm sitting here holding out on completing the final main story mission Revelation just so I can try to level up a couple of more skills...and I'm trying something I heard about. I already committed to Andreja in her version of marriage, but I'm currently trying to see if I can romance Sarah and marry her while in the committed relationship with Andreja. I heard it works if you pass a high level persuasion check with Andreja. We'll see. So far my relationship with Sarah is progressing right along. We just finished her personal quest and she's reciprocating the love language. So there's that. lol.
me too man, at first i thought it was dope because i could keep selling them to the kiosk but after my first play through it did just get annoying. there’s no select all like there is for resources and it just takes too damn long to either sell it all or jettison it
This has been one of the most helpful tips and tricks videos I've seen for shipbuilding, good job! I will also point out that the power requirements for the engines also apply to weapons; there's some with a max power of 2 that you can have 6 of!
Quick PSA: the lander thrust to mass ratio needs to be at least 1:200 to pass the flight check. Glad you mentioned the Nova landers with 4 thrust (supports up to 800 mass per lander) - when I found them, they made building smaller footprint yet high mass ships so much easier!
Thank you so much for the information! I learned a lot from this inspiring video alone. That one tip of finding what's not connected will be very helpful. Had that problem last night and after a while I gave up on it because I couldn't find one piece. Lol I'm still trying to figure out how placemat of the ladders and doors of the interior work. I'm sure I'll figure it out. I'm still in class B. I learned that parts of the ship are throughout the 11 places. I was wondering why one thing showed up at one place but not another. I truly recommend this video to anyone who is shipbuilding even if they are in class A or B. This video covers a lot which will be less stressful while building. Thank you for the inspiration and the knowledge.
I'm glad the video was helpful. I've been stuck before on ships for a couple of hours, too afraid to lose my progress by quitting, before I figured out how to find unattached modules :)
I just started looking into my ship, I have been stealing them but realized that very few allows upgrade and it is easier to grab one you like and upgrade it like you explained. I am still on level 27 96h and knowing that I will never see some parts until I reach 30s, saved me big time. Thank you
Only thing I would add in the part about modules not connected, if you can’t see it by just selecting all, you can select all and move the whole ship and the part not connected will stay where the ship used to be.
I haven't read all the comments but 2 things. 1. Thanks for this video it's great, man :) 2. For your ship colors, if you select one that has the colors you want and then select the piece you want to change you can then do the "slider shimmy" and it will change them both. This also works with select all as long as the piece you are starting with has the colors you want to apply. Thanks again for the great video :)
HEY BUDDY!! I owe you a TON of thanks: for weeks(!!!) I was frustrated with Ship Building; in fact I couldn't even figure out even the most basic parts of how to operate that screen... until, after watching your video, I sat down for a day and FORCED myself to learn it; now it is my absolute favorite part of playing Starfield; I have made ships with completely different styles (cargo transport; military fighter, Mantis and Frontier retrofits and an Outpost Supply and Construction vessel, that has a CRANE included!!) - if it wasn't for learning all the lessons learned here, I would have given up! Thanks for the highly detailed video and great ideas!
Stellar vid. This is one of the best tips/tutorials vids i've seen. One thing I would add, I found on Reddit: min. Landing Gear thrust is 1 Thrust / 200 Total mass rounding up. so a 199 Mass ship needs 1 landing gear thrust, 201 needs 2, etc.
One way to get early access to some of the higher end parts is to purchase the customized ships in a staryard. These ships can usually be spotted by the unusual paint scheme they carry. Some examples for each class: A - Warhorse from Neon, B - Shieldbreaker from New Atlantis, C - Narwhal from Neon. A lot of people will recommend the Narwhal as a purchase because it has a reactor with 36 points of power.
So once you purchase a ship with said parts you'll have access to those parts in your landing pad parts? What if you sell the ship. Do the parts go with it?
@@chrishanson8496Idk if you've already found an answer, but no it doesn't unlock those parts. It's just that those ships already have those high tier parts already installed, otherwise you would need to be a higher level and have maxed out starship design. It's just a way to get access to high tier stuff when you're still at low levels
Compared to other videos this one contains so much useful information... I watched dozens of them... wish I would've found this first. Would have saved me a lot of time and nerves😅
Amazing video. Ive made a super massive hauler with over 30,000 cargo but it has a mobility of 0. I covered it in turrets and a vanguard shield and now mobility doesnt matter, I can take a lot of hits and hit enemies without having to face them 😊
Had a 30k hauler mobility was 10 was still fast ship in a straight line with great boost speed. Had 12 auto turrets could kill fleets of ships no problems.
Seriously, thank God for UA-camrs. Because if it wasn't for all of you, I would never have been able to play this game to the extent that I have. I honestly do not understand how Bethesda puts out a game like this and then expects players to just figure it all out. It's a real testament to the gaming community and their passion that these creators are able to guide us when those who've made the game have failed.
Another cool thing about the Stroud-Eklund bay is that the housing matches the landing gear in shape. So does the side-docker, so you can have that on the other side. Makes it look very sleek.
The SAL-6830 engines unlock after Walter's quest on the main storyline, but only if you are diplomatic with Slayton at the end. They are the most powerful class C engines in game, even at level 200+ on ng+10 and beyond in my playthrough.
Thank you!!! These helped me immensely. Spent last night rebuilding my ship and I did more with it, EASILY, than I thought possible. I have a huge cargo hold now at 17k and it moves great. More building over weekend. Again, thank you.
@4:45 the filled circle inside the large circle means this is a structure snappoint only. Weapons only go on the filled square. Look at a Stroud Eklund Viking cockpit for an example of all 3 points - square for weapons, circle for snapping and chevron for door.
@@DarkdallyThe arrow thing my gosh, 200 hours in and it never caught my eye. It’s tied with the select all to find unattached components. Excellent vid Mr Dark. And Your little comment about using a controller on pc made my head spin.
When ship building, remember that al pieces on screen count to mass etc for mobility, even floating bits you've moved away to play around. So when doing the storage and Mob went down to 91, that's because the part moved was off to the side. Delete them and the Mob gets recalculated without that mass.
Great tips! I'm nearly at 350 hours in game and you taught me some new things. Like the color trick to match custom colors!🤦🏻♂️ Oh and the landing bay. I was so frustrated with it being in the back and facing backwards...You're simple tips help me correct it! My Light Frigate is now about perfect. Thank you tons!
I tell u what, I've learnt loads just from this one video alone, the game shud tell u all this, but thanku for makin this as plain and simple for ppl like me, alot of youtubers go so fast it's hard to keep up. So, cheers. Ps, I've subscribed to ur channel now. 👍
Colors tip: After you've added all your new parts, select all parts at the same time. When you go to edit the colors, do the one pixel back and forth like Darkdally did here in the video on all three colors while all parts are selected. It will update the new parts to match.
Thanks for the video and the words of encouragment. I've been spending hours in ship builder trying to get my bays to work and not knowing little things mentioned in the video.
Darkdally making Starfield content has made *my* day. Your Ghost Recon content is the best on UA-cam by a long shot. I'm currently running a homeless bounty hunter build (picture the Mandalorian before he met baby Yoda and you get the general idea), but I'll be devouring your ship building content when I do my next playthrough (space piracy is definitely on the agenda). Thanks for more awesome content my man, enjoy the rest of your day.
I was aware that you could get your colors by moving the slider around and back to what it was but i didn't know that it puts all the colors in recent from doing it to one of them (I've been moving the slider for all 3 custom colors). You don't actually have to select the piece before clicking Left Stick however, you just have to hover over the piece you want change. I also didn't realizing that selecting all would reveal the unnatched piece. Great video!
The SAL-6830 engines are unlocked by progressing partway through the Constellation quest line (doing Walter's quest, and finding the diplomatic solution at the end). It has nothing to do with your character level. They aren't "just available", and I don't believe there are any bigger engines in the game later. Also, they'll only be available at the Stroud-Ecklund staryard in the Narion system.
I just jumped in, with the new content, basically blind a few days ago. I stumbled upon the Mantis ship, which is really good compared to the Frontier. It kicks ass in dog fights. And half the time, the Pirates shit their pants and run, as soon as they see my ship lol. "It's the Mantis!". "Lets get th outta here!" Lmao. The only downside is the limited cargo space, but the built in shielded compartment is nice. I hijacked a veruun ship, and decided to modify it. All with only class A. I bumped her up from a 2 to 4 crew cockpit. Swapped around the existing 2x1 and single habs, which allowed me to go from single to double stacked cargo containers, and a 1 block shorter length overall, which looks better imo. I upgraded the 2 side engine to the best i could get, added a matching 3rd top mounted engine to the back, upgraded the grav, and bumped the fuel up from 50 to 160. All in all, i spent about 80k between the reg and rebuild. I have a class A ship, that seats 4 crew and 2 passengers, holds 3200kg cargo, plus 200kg shielded, with a jammer, and can travel up to 160. She only has 50 mobility, but shes good the couple points i put into piloting, and the extra perks from 2 additional crew. The hull is now over 600, and It came equipped with laser, missiles, and Particle, so she handles herself well in a fight, And she has every work station set up, like a full workshop on wings, with room for an 900kg in extra storage containers, gun racks, 6 beds, and displays. I know there will be shit that blows this out the water later on, but shes the workhorse I needed to get me through missions. I couldn't do any cargo runs, and now I can take almost all of the cargo missions ive seen so far, deliver passengers at the same time, fend off pirates, and be able to run around and explore unincumbered. So far im enjoying the game, and this has beeny favorite part.
Thank you so much for this video! I have struggled so much with this! I am only 5 min in and this is exactly what I needed!😅 next I need to see if you cover the different Living quarters I can never find the ones I like(have seen, but may also be limited by my levels)
This video should be mandatory for beginner shipbuilders. It's just that good. About the only thing in this video that needs further explanation is when he's talking about those Slayton Aerospace SAL-6830 engines. They are the best engines in the game, but are only available IF you complete the mission "All That Money Can Buy" in Neon, given by Walter Stroud, and you choose the diplomatic option to complete the mission. IF you pull off the diplomatic/cooperation solution for that particular quest, Stroud and Slayton will team up to develop the SAL-6830 engine, otherwise it's never developed and won't be in the game. So, do that particular side quest correctly, or you'll never have those awesome engines. As far as I know, this is the only ship part that's existence in the game, is dependent on what decision you made in a particular side quest. So, complete All That Money Can Buy correctly, or you'll never see the best engines in the game. FYI
The docking port on the bottoms is and extremely helpful tip. The only ladder on my current ship build is to a single 1x1 Hab to hold a docking port, which I don't care for that much, but was a compromise.
As far as I know, your character level has nothing to do with your ship parts availability. Piloting and Starship Design skills are what determine your access to ship modules. If you put all your skill points into the tech tree you can unlock everything by about character level 15. Great video, I learned a lot.
Oh yeah, and I just imagine them introducing a new manufacturer with more parts as well. I'm sure they will. I think of the DLC for Fallout 4 they released focusing on building.
I respect this video, normal gamer,, not lol 9000 with everything done and making it sound so easy, appreciate the info man! Been playing since day one and just learned about the unconnected module trick, +1 follower
I had very much the same problems at the beginning. The ship builder is great but it can be a bit overwhelimng at first, these are the common problems that may turn a lot of people off. great video!
I'm glad you posted this video. I'm not a ship builder, I'm a ship modifier. One of the things that make me crazy is the maze you have to run to get to the engineering bay and then back to the cockpit. You just helped me remove the maze and make the ship more functional. Could you please make a video about making a simple, functional ship for those of us that want power and functionality?
What I learned from this video is that the engine I should have been using is a quest unlock. And here I was thinking I just slap six SAL-6330s on my ships and can call it a day. Thanks for the learning opportunity!
Yeah man, and I didn't realize it was a quest unlock. I just noticed that it was there in the shop when previously it was not. I'm glad I could give some good tips in the video.
Ya but can only get those Sal engines if you complete the all money can buy quest. From stroud. Correct? NG+ can lock you out of that quest if you choose to skip the main quest lines
@@randyfrench2022 ... Every extra engine weights more than biggest storage box so more engines gives you more power and same time take some off coz it weight, Im not sure what is a real balance of it, how more power you will have when you consider more engines with weight vs less engines but with small weight and big power rate
@@randyfrench2022 and @damnbrosky thanks for this. I've been thinking the extra weight isn't worth it but you've prompted me to go look and there's pretty good difference in maneuvering thrust (which is where my ship struggles) so I might be a convert to 2 power engines. I've been trying to reduce weight as the thrust maneuvering was about the same for A class engines, I forgot you're fitting 50% more engines so getting about 50% more vectored thrust
After many hours using existing game ships with rear landing bays, I finally built my own ship: like Darkdally illustrated in this video - front landing bay which loads you facing the cockpit hatch is HUGE…I use a two-level cockpit with docking hatch on top at the front. SUCH a better layout. No matter if I’m docked at a space station or on a planet, I can get to my cockpit quickly to take off - no more running around habs opening hatches just to get to the pilot seat.
Very useful, thank you. It took me days to work out why I couldn't access the new habs I'd installed - I didn't realise you had to join them properly. I do think the shipbuilder is unessarily finicky and complicated though - it does my head in.
The SAL-6830 engines (Max Power 2, Thrust 18k, Maneuver Thrust 8800) are not level locked (min level is 1 and no perk requirements). It is a quest reward. I won't spoil anything but Walter will approach you with a quest to buy an artifact on Neon. It is called "All That Money Can Buy" and you will need to get a certain outcome to unlock this engine. Just pursue the Constellation quests and collecting artifacts and Walter will approach you with the quest.
I felt the frustration of the storages. I started playing 3 days ago and only having 300 storage was rough. I ended up saving up to 350k creds to build my first class C ship and it has 13,000 storage lol. I wish they would let you use the outpost building style for the inside of your ship as well so I could have a little more creative freedom about where my ladders are made and such in my multi level ships without having to worry about where I put my parts as to not connect them in unintended ways. Good video!
I just used a console command to give my ship 2000000 storage, lol. Don't need to add any storage modules that way, and can just focus on the aesthetics of the ship. I'm currently holding just over 100,000 kg of resources, so still plenty of room. It will make things so much easier when I decide to build my main outpost, as with my ship on the lander, I can just build whatever I like without needing to actually have the resources on me.
Also I wanted to ask you. In your opinion, when is the best level to really start building your ship the way you want? I am learning how to do the shipbuilder and I do get frustrated with it because of the errors I get.
I would start by just customizing existing ships. Get a feel for how that works. Then when you have about 3 to 500,000 credits built up I would go ahead and try to build something custom. Unlocking the shipbuilder parts using skills can also be a good thing to do, but you can build pretty cool stuff with just the class a parts. My first customization was just at a shit ton of cargo to the razor leaf.
Amazing ship designs! Like most other pilots i design sleek and aerodynamic not realising its not an issue. Came for video, left most inspired for experimental builds now. Great job, keep those videos coming.
@@Darkdally Then there's the fact that every (flyable) ship lands on a planet in the game, and takes off from a planet, so aerodynamics still play a very important role with the ships of Starfield. The hull stress to reach escape velocity is quite large. So if roleplay realism is the goal, aerodynamics should still matter.
@@dominic.h.3363Yeah, true, but we have thrusters. I guess in Sci-fi, we can imagine that the thrusters are all we need to overcome gravity. I do always mostly imagine spaceships as they are shown classically - often with aerodynamic surfaces of some time. And the aerodynamic Taiyo pieces are some of my favorites for making spaceships in the game. But you know, being sci-fi, I look at it like for instance, "okay, some type of gravity drive would work somehow", and then don't look to far into it, you know.. I mean.. That's kinda my favorite thing about sci-fi - in any game or movie, they put for the rules, and it's like "oh, okay, laser guns are a thing here, okay" and then now that's part of the plot, you know.
That select all thing for finding unconnected ship module would have been a lifesaver. I moved my entire ship piece by piece over to the left and rebuilt it. It took like 20 minutes.
Very well put together video with great tips. I was just thinking about trying to build a ship instead of just make a few modifications, now that I have leveled starship engineering to 3 and can get some good stuff. made a page of notes to refer to when I start. Also some great comments with a couple more good pointers.
We need to be able to rotate hab units. When we connect certain ones they remove benches or bathrooms or beds. It would be great to be able to place hab units and then rotate them to the orientation that best works for us, even if it's only in 180° increments. Great video! Thank you very much for the tips! You got my sub👍🏻
Good tips indeed. One of the things many ship builders out there think about is solely the outside. I also try connect my habs in a manner that makes sense internally. Like my living quarters would be alongside say my mess hall and the armory near my exit bay etc. So you can imagine coming back from a mission and might have someone injured you'd want to get him into the hospital pronto to help him. Connecting your storage bays near where they could be easily loaded in port and then distribute items into the ship and so on. The options are endless and those connection arrows make a massive difference both internal and external. An item if you have an oddity that can be your friend as well are companion ways. Good video!! Thank you!
I set up my interiors the same way. I spend a lot of time putting them where they make sense, and making sure that the ladders and connections are right.
Same here. I always like to connect my bay to cargo hold & armory & downward dock at a companion way. With this CW, ladder up to another CW. With my 2/f CW, I use HopeTech tunnel hab (straight/side) connects to other main hub: 1) left: mess hall + living + infirmary 2) right: sci lab, workshop + control Then another CW for 3/F where I put my cockpit & captain quarter. As for engine, I always use Class B power 3 only, so that I can have 4 engine with the least mass 😅 Same for weapon, Only use class A & B type, Max power 3, then I can have a total of 12qty weapon ok board.
@@Darkdally Very cool. One thing I wish we could do in the game is save a partial build. Takes a lot of effort to build good ships. A good idea now is not always a good idea later and is an ongoing improvement process to build a perfect ship. An yes later in the game it costs mega credits to do some of the stuff. I'm glad you brought that up. Not as simple as one is lead to believe the deeper one goes. Well done!
Speaking of making sure the ladders and and connections are right, do you have any tips for that on console or is it just keep shuffling around habs until you get the connections you want?@@Darkdally I know there's the spines and corridors that force doorways, but those can also get quite heavy and cumbersome. (Not to mention that they're narrow and easily get blocked up when you have a lot of crew and/or passengers) PC has a trick where they can select the connection point where they want the door/ladder to go and open the menu to place the pieces from there, but I was wondering if there might be a similar trick for controller players that I just haven't found.
@@GremlinSciences I honestly don't think that works on PC, either. I think it's just a myth. It updates the ladders and connections every time the hab module complex is updated. You can attach a module on the end and it may shift ladders on the other side of the ship. That's just a misconception that that works at all.
I built an A-10 Thunderbolt , an SU-34, and several Future-Fighter style ships. The possibilities are near endless. Learn to Flip glitch & Drop Down Glitch
The game NEEDS the option to walk inside the ship in the builder mode, so you can see how the interior layout looks.
😁
Exactly, its like buying a house based on just the exterior

Lander Thrust is 200:1 ratio. 1 thrust for 200 mass.
As you level up, I found not so much more powerful engines got unlocks, as you got smaller engines with the same power. When I got to level 57, I was able to retool my massive 9000+ cargo ship from class C to class B and gains mobility cause of the weight savings of the lighter parts. It's like at early level you NEED class C to have a powerful ship, but in later levels you can build class A and B ships that shred.
Just retooled the mantis this way. It's a b class cannon now! 💯

Love the game got like 500 hours in. I totally agree because they skipped on tutorials because they knew creators would fill it in and gives the creator something to do.
450 hours?? My god!
Thanks a lot, man 🙂
450? impressive, and here i thought my 220 hrs were a lot
So there's that. lol.
I’m frustrated trying to find good interiors that make sense for the ship and flow. For instance, finding beds for all of my crew and passengers.
For the flat dock on bottom thing, you get a like.
The way it fills your cargo to max capacity with misc junk everytime you even say…change the color of your ship, I find absolutely infuriating
Yes i agree but i also look at it as the game giving me free things to sell because it regenerates
It's also an easy way to level commerce when you sell.
I thought it stupid as well.
I actually like it because I generally have a bunch of cargo space anyway and it’s free money 🤷🏼♂️
me too man, at first i thought it was dope because i could keep selling them to the kiosk but after my first play through it did just get annoying. there’s no select all like there is for resources and it just takes too damn long to either sell it all or jettison it
This has been one of the most helpful tips and tricks videos I've seen for shipbuilding, good job! I will also point out that the power requirements for the engines also apply to weapons; there's some with a max power of 2 that you can have 6 of!
The most useful ship building tutorial I have found. Very useful. Thanks man 👍
Quick PSA: the lander thrust to mass ratio needs to be at least 1:200 to pass the flight check.
Glad you mentioned the Nova landers with 4 thrust (supports up to 800 mass per lander) - when I found them, they made building smaller footprint yet high mass ships so much easier!
100% confirmed 1 landing thrust to 200 ship mass.
This was the most important answer I had been searching for. Haha thanks!
Thank you so much for the information!
I learned a lot from this inspiring video alone. That one tip of finding what's not connected will be very helpful. Had that problem last night and after a while I gave up on it because I couldn't find one piece. Lol
I'm still trying to figure out how placemat of the ladders and doors of the interior work.
Thank you
The magic number is level 60 for normal unlocks that are not hidden behind quests.
Only thing I would add in the part about modules not connected, if you can’t see it by just selecting all, you can select all and move the whole ship and the part not connected will stay where the ship used to be.
Yep, that so made my day when I figured it out.
Cocpit names pls.
I stumbled on this early before any real frustration. I consider myself lucky, so I'm glad these things are addressed in so many videos, now. 👍🏼
good tip!
@@craig.a.glesner
Haha, yeah, just found that out by coincidence today, really helpful!
Awesome tip, thank you!
Awesome! I'm glad it was helpful :)
Yeah, that's a great rule of thumb for sure.
I'm glad it was helpful!
Hey bro, thumbs up for the "Select All" trick to find Unattached Modules 👍👍 Give this guy some likes everyone.
@4:45 the filled circle inside the large circle means this is a structure snappoint only. Weapons only go on the filled square. Look at a Stroud Eklund Viking cockpit for an example of all 3 points - square for weapons, circle for snapping and chevron for door.
Thanks, this makes more sense now.
Not only a great video, but breaking it out in chapters is super handy. Thanks!
Your video massively helped me as I learned new things. Thanks for taking the time.
Amazingly useful vid!! The arrow thing showing you where you can physically move around saved me sooo much frustration!!
Awesome! Glad the vid was helpful
@@DarkdallyThe arrow thing my gosh, 200 hours in and it never caught my eye. It’s tied with the select all to find unattached components. Excellent vid Mr Dark. And Your little comment about using a controller on pc made my head spin.
As a member of the casual ship building community, this kind of video is very helpful. Really good stuff, thank you!
This video was one of the best that I have seen and I have watched a bunch!! Thank you 🙏🏾
When ship building, remember that al pieces on screen count to mass etc for mobility, even floating bits you've moved away to play around.
Be sure to double click on one of your prior parts when selecting all or the colors that show up in the palette will be those of the new part instead.
I am blown away... Subscribed! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
Soo many insides! Thank You so much for sharing many technical stuff. I faced all those issues and now I know how to fix them. Thank You
Thanks for the video and the words of encouragment.
Thanks man! I hope to have more up soon
Thanks!
Really like to make ships with no ladders except the docker.
Thus I use the Cabot cockpits.
Also the NG-20 landing gear is awesome.
Great vid, really excited to get back to tinkering with my ship now. You've killed slot of frustration for me. Thanks
Thanks, you probably saved me hours of flying around looking for those things!
One of the best engines in the game too.
By far the most helpful guide I’ve seen. This should be called The Manual for Shipbuilding.
The best video on ship building I've seen so far, thanks!
Thanks!
The error check using selection is incredibly useful. Thanks
Great video, very informative. Thanks for your work.
Thank you so much for this video! I have struggled so much with this! I am only 5 min in and this is exactly what I needed!😅 next I need to see if you cover the different Living quarters I can never find the ones I like(have seen, but may also be limited by my levels)
Thanks! I haven't covered different hab modules, but I thought about making a video for that.
select all - omg, out of all the helpful items in the video that blew me away. lol such a simple method. thank you
This is the most complete detailed guide to ship building I've seen and answer some issues I've been struggling with 🎉
Same here. The connection of the landing to cockpit drove me crazy. The tip on the arrows is a godsend. TY mate 👏👏👏👍
FYI
Thanks man. And yeah, I didn't realize that yet about those engines at the time I made this. I appreciate it.
Your tip on finding the unattached module🤯. Thanks for the content.
The docking port on the bottoms is and extremely helpful tip. The only ladder on my current ship build is to a single 1x1 Hab to hold a docking port, which I don't care for that much, but was a compromise.
Oh man the dock beinbg flipped fss... it allways made me design stupidly but now omfg.. YOU THE KING sir!
Awesome vid for how small your channel is. No BS filler content, all great tips.
Thanks for the vid. Some really useful info here!
As far as I know, your character level has nothing to do with your ship parts availability. Piloting and Starship Design skills are what determine your access to ship modules. If you put all your skill points into the tech tree you can unlock everything by about character level 15. Great video, I learned a lot.
Select all and see the unconnected modules. Nice. Now I can select all and move the ship over to get at the parts with out a total rebuild. Thanks.
Shipbuilding in and of itself is worth an expansive DLC that resolves many issues and lets you do much more.
Oh yeah, and I just imagine them introducing a new manufacturer with more parts as well. I'm sure they will. I think of the DLC for Fallout 4 they released focusing on building.
Thaniks for solving the unattached modules mystery.
It's great to see you doing Starfield videos. I watch your Ghost Recon videos all the time.
You helped me with at least 3 things I didn’t know thanks 🙏
Awesome tutorial
Omg... the color trick... THANK YOU!!!
I respect this video, normal gamer,, not lol 9000 with everything done and making it sound so easy, appreciate the info man! Been playing since day one and just learned about the unconnected module trick, +1 follower
Awesome job Dark... I've been building for a bit and you taught me stuff I didn't know. I'm lv 36 and have over 150 hours played. Keep 'em coming.
I'm glad there was helpful info in the vid! Thanks
@Darkdally I struggled with the no path to dock or bay errors as well
I had very much the same problems at the beginning.
Amazing video, wish there were more like this. Great work
What I learned from this video is that the engine I should have been using is a quest unlock.
Nice build! The front of your 'side pod' reminds me of the guy that pulled the lever on the Death Star😂
Great thanks can now match colours to my new parts.
I'm 340 hours+ in. the unattached mod's was news to me. thanks.
Great job explaining these tips. Now to watch the rest of your videos. Thanks
I'm glad you liked the vid!
Really good info here. Thank you for doing this. U have changed my game play.
The strongest engines I have found are on Gargarn in Alpha Centari. They have 36000 thrust.
Yeah but u can only have 3. U can have 6 sal-6830s which make the most thrust and maneuverability in the game by far
With 6 of those u can have around 4200 mass and still have 100 mobility. I have 10.5k cargo and still able to have 100 mobility
@@randyfrench2022 and
@damnbrosky thanks for this.
Thank you, your tip about finding unconnected Modules is sooo helpful. And by the way, if anyone wonders how its done on pc: ctrl + double click
Oh and once i found out i can select all and color the entire ship at once that was a game changer.
That was very helpful! Great video! Now I want to go to build another ship!
Amazing ship designs! Like most other pilots i design sleek and aerodynamic not realising its not an issue.
Came for video, left most inspired for experimental builds now.
Great job, keep those videos coming.
I tend to go for aerodynamic looks as well. I know it doesn't matter, but I have a hard time not having surfaces or wings of some kind. Thanks!
Yes and no. Mass and inertia are still a thing, so if you aim for realism, structural integrity is still the most optimal with an aerodynamic design.
@@dominic.h.3363 Hmm. Well said.
Thank you for this breakdown.
Already got my info the first 4 minutes then other vids I’ve watched
Very well put together video with great tips. I was just thinking about trying to build a ship instead of just make a few modifications, now that I have leveled starship engineering to 3 and can get some good stuff. made a page of notes to refer to when I start. Also some great comments with a couple more good pointers.
Good luck!
This video was soooooo helpful!!! Thank you! Will you be continuing to make Starfield content?
I will indeed. I'll have a new video soon
This was a great video of general tips.
That little arrow got me too when I first started in ship building.
This was great! The engine power allotment was an eye opener. Thanks!
Thank you. Great video and I learned some important details.
Absolutely brilliant video!
With my 2/f CW, I use HopeTech tunnel hab (straight/side) connects to other main hub:
1) left: mess hall + living + infirmary
2) right: sci lab, workshop + control
Then another CW for 3/F where I put my cockpit & captain quarter.
As for engine, I always use Class B power 3 only, so that I can have 4 engine with the least mass 😅
Same for weapon,
Only use class A & B type, Max power 3, then I can have a total of 12qty weapon ok board.
Well done!
Speaking of making sure the ladders and and connections are right, do you have any tips for that on console or is it just keep shuffling around habs until you get the connections you want?@@Darkdally
I know there's the spines and corridors that force doorways, but those can also get quite heavy and cumbersome.
This video was extremely helpful. Thank you.
I built an A-10 Thunderbolt , an SU-34, and several Future-Fighter style ships. The possibilities are near endless.
