I was an optician for 39 years. The best memories I took with me was working with the little kids and seeing their expression with their first pair of Eyewear! It was priceless! I got to watch alot of these kids grow up to be teenagers and always wanting to see me when it was time for new eyewear!

Funny you call them eyewear as if the frames are the special part. Eye glasses or spectacles.

@anonnymowse Eyewear is the frames and lenses together. You see I didn't just say frame.

@@cindyleasure6901 It makes it sound casual like a piece of clothing when it is a medical device. Nowadays, the frames are insanely expensive because they have designer's or celebrity's names on them. Almost all the frames are made by Luxotica. What a racket.

How do opticians measure exactly how well, or badly, little toddlers can see if they can't speak to you and tell you? What's the work-around hack for that? I always wondered how they estimated the kid's need exactly.

I love these videos. They make me so happy. I didn't get glasses until I was 13. My parents refused to believe that I had vision problems. By the time I got glasses, I was legally blind. I was so happy to be able to see. I kept smiling and laughing. When I got home my father told me to stop smiling because I looked ugly with glasses. I'm 57 now and have had years of therapy. Things are better for me now.

Thanks for replying, I am asking on behalf of a friend whose child is 3 months now and they found out he has severe atrophy in optical nerve, and the pupils are not responding to light properly so most provably he sees shadows, do you think glasses can fix this from your experience?

I had problems seeing things when I was in the 5th grade and had to get glasses. It was cool I could see things clearer even though I got bullied about it. But the important thing is I could see, I could see the board, what the teacher wrote and it helped me. I don't think I would have made it far, if I didn't have my glasses, trying not to get emotional but I'm sensitive.

Had a client about 2 years old (I was wheelchair therapist), was told he had very limited vision so we just 'worked with what we had'. This made Mum realise that it was maybe time to push to get his vision properly re-assessed. The result being glasses and a kid that could see, and that could operate his electric wheelchair... and could be a normal 2 year-old and be naughty and push boundaries and Develop. Was wonderful. One follow-up appointment Mum told me how his latest 'game' was 'running off' in his chair (they had a semi-rural lifestyle block) laughing hysterically knowing at least one parent would be hot in pursuit.

I was around 12 when I found out I needed glasses. I somehow got missed in earlier screenings and it wasn't until a school screening that it became clear I couldn't see well. I remember the sudden and amazing change in my vision as the glasses went on and suddenly I could see everything clearly. I understand why so many of these kids smile when they get over the discomfort of having the glasses on - unless you've been without clear sight for a long time, its hard to convey the change.

I had an 8th grade student who likely needed glasses her whole life, but her parents believed "glasses would make her eyes worse if she wore them" and so they never got her glasses.
The first day of class I realized she could not read the board from the second row and so I moved her to the first row and it made no difference. It took weeks of convincing but her parents finally agreed to see a doctor when I told them I'd pay for the appointment if the doctor concluded she didn't need glasses. Needless to say, she needed an incredibly strong prescription and I didn't have to pay a dime. She went from a D student in math to getting straight As. Watching her in the days after she got glasses wasn't much different than watching this toddler's reaction to finally seeing the world in HD!

Amazing that physicians can put together these glasses using diagnostic tools that don't require patient feedback. In patients who have verbal language, you can do the "is A better or is B better?" kind of testing. When that's not an option, whether by age or other factors, technology has to step up.
