So all spyderco cru-carta knives have non- nested liners. If you get a military 2 with g10 scales, the liners are nested. Spyderco did that so when the micarta gets wet and moves a little it won't offset the blade
According to Eric Glesser. The Micarta is not as strong as the G10 so that’s why we get full liners. Sal wanted this knife in micarta. But it’s still a bad ass Spyderco.❤️
I’ve handled the pm2 and pm3 and never really liked the proportions. But everyone keeps talking about how great they are, so I wanted to at least try one. But I like the proportions on this one a lot better, and I like big knives and I can not lie.
I like the liners exposed and this also supports the Micarta better. On G10 I doubt it matters but on these slim Micarta scales on a user knife, it matters.
With spyderco, i feel like you pay for the blade. If you want a product that will preform to its full potential spyderco is the answer. I think they make user knives plain and simple. Most of their products are overpriced, but so is everything else that is in demand. Love the content.
You nailed it. I feel like they are great for under $250. Anything over though and they are playing in a territory they can’t keep up in. Waaaaay better than benchmade for sure. But when I can get a carbon fiber skaha in magnacut for the same price that has equally great heat treat, much better action and is even more ergonomic, I’d go north arm every time. I do have a pm2 in s110v and a para3 in s90 that are beaters though.
I have the Para 3 and PM2 versions and the full liners are just a feature of the CruCarta versions. I actually prefer it. Nested liners offer no advantage, but the full liners do offer more material strength for the micarta scales which isn't as strong as G10. Besides, more metal in the liners does make for an overall stronger knife. I would assume this was a decision that Sal or Eric made to insure that the micarta scaled knives still meet or exceed their MBC rating. Sal has written some interesting information about their strength testing, ratings, and various failure points of knives during testing, on the Spyderco forum if you're interested.
I had the S30 on Pre-Order, absolutely fell in love with it, then got the S110V version! For the money, they are unbeatable! Don't know about the Cru-Carta version, but the G10 versions are extremely light for the size! Not only a must for any Spyderco nutt, a must for any knife nutt!
Something I'm loving about recent Microtechs is the quality has improved and the price as gone down. But I do have to agree with one of the above posters and that there needs to be a Spyderco Custom Shop where you can select your name and scales for their biggest models.
I think they addressed this in at least 1 blade show interview. They did the full liners without the lip for the CrewCarta due to the material having structural issues. The full liners also are only for this version. The others should have the normal nested partial liners.
hey carter , ok...right.....urmm. i like spyderco knives a lot. i have had maybe 60 . i do not anymore lust for the expensive models ie paysan. so my favourites as of now afre the military 2 and the yojimbo 2 followed by the pm2. here in the uk we have to pay a lot more than you guys in the us. not an issue but but but they are not a cheap knife. by the way i have had strider, rockstead, microtech , medford etc. i do think that the qc is getting worse and it is really not on but buy or don't buy and i choose to still buy. i really like the military 2 it is awesome. i recently picked up the sprint s90v and cf scales. lockstick yes and i don't really believe in the breaking in period. i stripped my knife polished the washers on 1200 grit emery paper and then on to my diamond 1 micron leather strop. then added kpl and re-assembled my knife it is now how it should have came in the first place. still a tiny bit of stick but doesn't bother me otherwise i would have tried to out bend the compression lock a tad. going back to my maxamet pm2 and para 3 maxamet...........wow they were pretty special in action in fact awesome , i bought two pm2's in maxamet and both were 10/10. thanks for sharing.
Just what I wanted. A bigger PM2 perfect. FYI Rockscale is in the works for TI scales for this model but currently only has the nested versions available. 🤞
I like the look of the non-nested liners. But, I'm not a fan of micarta, so I got the Crucarta PM2 and replaced the scales with AWT agent series scales. Its now a favorite and I carry it all the time.
You kinda summed up how I feel about Spyderco’s releases this year. Mostly updates that they should’ve done years ago. The Bodacious is like 90% Shaman except without the nub on the blade, which is nice. But then they got rid of the nice contoured scales. They could’ve just made a nub-less Shaman, but made an underwhelming (imo) new knife.
I enjoyed the video and learned too. I just love button lock flippers, so this is a hard no. Crucarta is a big trend, no doubt. I like that people love the tough, extra thin behind the edge geometry that's possible. I just never think of folders as very much. They are convenience items, locks don't matter to me, if anything they are an extra step. I carry an Appalachian Drifter and its simple dee dee, just not as safe to myself. I never push a folder, think tactical with one or see it as anything but quick, easy edge carry, with downsides. Putting a big price on them makes them even less appealing. And i absolutely HATE buying an expensive folder and it has softer thsn optimal blade and crummy action....just paying for a design or a name bites the big one.
Dunno where u buy your knives but a Military2 @ WMK runs $189. That seems reasonable (to me) for a 4”, Made in USA, S30V folder. And about half of the cost of your usual (made in PRC) reviewed knives.
@@edged_mindset All the Crucarta, except the Shaman sprint (thicker scales), have full liners for strength. Personally, I appreciate it, I've seen nested micarta chip out under reasonable hard use.
I stopped watching when you said they cheaped out with the proud liners. That was part of the entire point of the crucarta version for each rendition: Para3, PM2, and M2.
Yes, it is a rip off. The Military 2 costs at Amazon 210$ in S30V and the Para Military 2 in S30V costs 199$. I got an DuraTech in 8Cr13MoV for 12$ and an Ganzo 729 clone of the PM2 in 440C costs 21$. I take the later chinese ones. Both have an axis lock and claim 55-60 HRC and 58 HRC respectively.
@@edged_mindset The thing is this. Patents expire. It is not amoral, nor unethic nor godless nor antibiblical to copy an preexistent idea of another person. As even by law patents expire after about 20 years. So did the Para Military 2 knife patent expire already long time ago since it was invented by Spyderco around 1994 if I am not mistaken. So is the patent of the Axis lock already expired which Benchmade pioneered. Thats the reason lots of axis locks exist and are on all sorts of 10$ to 20$ knives. Because the patent expired. When science started around 1870 or so nobody thought in an Patent Office. Why? Because they felt all inventions are owned by all humanity and ultimately by God himself. Patents are owned by God at the end since he is the creator of the humans and thus as well as the inventer. The inventer has to pay God if he wants to be paid for "his" invention. At the end God gave you your brain for free and for free you taketh and for free you giveth. That was the reasoning of the first inventers when around 1900 and after the idea of an patent came up. At first they wanted all inventions to be for free for all humanity and human civilisation. Thus I do not feel any bad to buy a Ganzo since I am sure Benchmade and Spyderco did not pay off God himself neighter. Just copy that and that is even legal since patents have an expiry date. Everybody should feel Ok about that... I would not feel Ok to give a Dime to an rip off company like Benchmade or Spyderco - they directly rip you off. Their production costs of any S30V PM2 knife is only around 15$ max. Those are thieves and caused partially the misery lots of americans live in by inflating sky high the MSRP. They must have an renatability on an PM2 of about 1500% at least. Thats already approaching drug and arms trafficking levels.
@@edged_mindset That may be. The germans copied the english stuff as well around 1900 (like buying an original english motorcycle, copy cat that and building better ones). The english pulled off WW1 because of that. WW1 was an british set up to get rid of the german competition. Then after 1945 the japanese copied the american stuff and made it better. No war this time. Then the South Koreans and Taiwanese copied the japanese stuff. No war. Today the chinese copy the Korean and Taiwanese stuff. In reality nobody waits really 20 years except in todays western civilisation where the rule of law is functioning. I am sure the vietnamese and indians will copy the chinese stuff and ellbow them out of the market. As far as I know, the Para Military 2 or Military from Spyderco was invented around 1994 by Spyderco. That means the design and patent for the PM2 ran out in 2014. Around that time I have understood Benchmades axis lock patent ran out as well. So the PM2 and Military (4" blade) design should be free to use by anybody. Surprisingly Ganzo changed the "round hole" to an oval one - because Spyderco has patented the round hole. Ganzo would not be able to sell Ganzo 729 models in the US if they would have an round hole. So the oval hole is not patented and thus free of use. The very fact that Ganzo sells on Amazon and eBay means they are within legal limits and the patents ran out. Same for the axis lock which as far as I know ran its patent out in 2016 or so. Anybody can use it freely. If not they (Ganzo) would not be able to sell on Amazon USA. It's not illegal. The fact one copied product shows up means the patents have ran out and expired. That is why the Ganzo 729 is a no brainer and nobody will get into trouble with Jesus if he buys the Ganzo 729. There is a reason Ganzo does not have the PM3 as close copy. It's patents did not run out yet. You see?! If a thing is sold in the US, that means allways the patent has expired. Lest they would get in big legal trouble. Ganzo does not the Spyderco compression lock. For a reason: It's patent did not yet expire. But the axis lock patent they are able to sell freely thus the patent has expired. The axis lock is an by far superior lock system to all others IMHO. Can't hold hostage of an idea forever in a patent. It will expire at most in 20 years.
I like the stretch k390 over pm2. Compression locks suck, they are too loose and bouncy on the para's. Yojimbo compression is nice and like a guillotine

China nests liners in micarta all the time without issues..spyderco is just being lazy
As others have stated, the g10 version has nested liners. Only the crucarta has the standard sandwich construction.

I love mine and the G-10 one weighs 4.40 oz. I think they weigh so close because the crucarta has full liners and the G-10 has spaces cut out.
Also the G-10 version is nested.
beautiful knives, would that longer pm be stronger with titanium scales?
Yes for sure
Great Video. Note: The G-10 Models have Nested Liners. Only the Micarta or CruCarta Model has exposed Liners. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

It is an awesome blade, and a great deal $
Even the Para Military Crucarta has exposed liners. I think it's more difficult to use inset liners with micarta scales.
I doubt they are saving money by having different style liners for micarta vs g10.
