Building some BIG hives

- Last week I prevented some swarming in my honey production hives by using the Demaree method of depopulating the brood chamber. This week i have been removing the resulting queen cells from the top of the colony which is getting bigger by the day....and no need to hold them back....these will be BIG hives.
WOW. Your beekeeping knowledge and practices are great.
You are an exemplary person for young beekeepers. It's a pleasure to watch you. Love From Turkey.
How nice of you to say so.
Beautiful bee yard. Very much like seeing it.
Thank you. And the video icon pic of the solid brood packed out on the frame was nice also.
So nice of you
thank you for the follow up video have a great day
Thanks, you too!
Nice work loved watching you go through the hives and showing how the Demaree system was working for you , I can relate to ticked off bees , my bees behave the same , we don’t wear bee keeping suits for nothing lol. Really enjoyed the video. Cheers 👍
Thanks 👍
your Hives are looking great, God Bless
Thank you kindly
Thank you for all your information
My pleasure!
You mentioned having plenty of room but yet colonies wanting to set up for swarming all over the state.
I am in Northern Minnesota and have had colonies start building queen cells with plenty of room for the queen to lay and have had a number of prolific laying queens just suddenly stop laying.
There is something very strange going on this year.
Not sure why the queen just up and stopped laying when there has been plenty of room with plenty of nectar and pollen coming in.
We have seen the same thing in Maine in some instances but most hives are behaving normally.
Would you leave a top entrance for drones to escape the top now emerging brood or do you need to avoid a top entrance for this to work properly?
Either will work but a top entrance is probably helpful.
I performed a demaree split on a hive that was previously split from a very agressive and overpopulated hive. Now I don't see any evidence of a laying queen .
How should I requeen this hive?
I would hedge my bets by takeing a couple of nucs from it with new queens. The big hive in my experience is much less likely to accept the new queen than smaller ones.
Hi Peter- I'd be interested in several one-frame nucs next spring. what do you charge?
I have not worked out their price yet but expect them to be $85-95
Before you made the Demaree splits, did you treat the brood chamber for mites? If so, is it okay that the brood chamber will be used for honey, after the demaree split? Does the miticide get into the wax?
No but treat as required. Its OK as long as you use the right treatments.
what are you using for inner covers that look like the inside of cooler?
Thanks for all of your great videos. When using the Demaree method, do the bees backfill the top box with nectar after the brood hatches out? Should a frame or two of brood be moved from the bottom brood box to the top box as necessary to keep the bottom brood box from over congestion? How should a Demaree hive be reconfigured for winter preparations? I am planning to try the Demaree method the next time I am at the apiary.
Yes you can keep moving brood out of the lower chamber as and if necassary. I plan to either over winter these bees asa single deep or, if we have a good Fall flow I may let them fill a second super for them selves.
Honey is money
Why don’t you save the queen cells and make more queens and nucs with them?
I could but I have made what I need for now and those I make next will be for specifically chosen queens.
I know this is old but I notice you don't go through the bottom box much.
With experience you can usually tell fairly accurately what is happening in the bottom brood box by looking at a few frames in the top box. This check tells you if you need to go deeper.
Why does a bee whisperer need a big space suit like that! I can work bees in a tee shirt and jeans.... funny...!!!
I would love to see you work his ( bee whisperers ) bees in a t shirt and jeans , now that would make my day , that would be funny 😂
There is too much shaming of new and old beekeepers into not wearing protective gear. I don't like getting stung and I often have to tick off my bees. To each his own.
Where are you located? Do you have any hybrids? One of these days you will pay for your indiscretion. You should never work bees without a minimum of protection. No it is not funny to engage in something as potentially dangerous as beekeeping is with all that protective gear. It is smart. The man knows what he is doing.
