A small-town teen (Aubrey Peeples) goes viral after a video of her singing is posted to the Internet. She and her sister's band are catapulted into global superstardom, but their newfound fame threatens to break apart their familial bonds when a record executive (Juliette Lewis) meddles in their affairs. After the movie came out, I didn't care for it since I love the cartoon, but then I actually met the voice of Jem, Samantha Newark and she told me to go watch it again. To watch it and think of it as a new, modern take. And I actually love it.

I agree with her like this is one of my favourite movies ever , I didn’t watch jem and the holograms growing up so I get that people probably don’t love it because of the original but it should be seen as a modern take and separate to the old jem and see it for the movie that it is like I fee this movie has a lovely message behind it

It's not that, it's that fans poured their heart out to the cartoon Jem in their fan videos, but then the studios edited them to make it look like they're praising THIS Jem.

Well, though studios DO tend to make a lot of bad decisions with their films, it was actually the director, Jon M. Chu who decided to edit the fans' videos to make it look as if they're talking about the film version. He even admitted following this backlash that it was to pay tribute to the fans who loved the cartoon following this film's events. But yeah, it does feel wrong to do something like that. Its kind of like taking videos of people saying why they love Batman and editing them to make it look like they're talking about Batman & Robin.
The lyrics is very inspirational not only for women but for men too.

I don't HATE the movie. I don't love it, either. I... I'm ok with it. The acting's pretty good, it's emotional at times, funny at others, the robot is adorable. I never watched the original show, but I think I'd like the movie more than the show, only because it's dated and the stuff in the show really isn't my thing. And most of the songs in the movie are REALLY good. I only have one MAJOR problem with this movie. You see those people talking about how Jem changed their life and all that? How much they love Jem and whatnot? Well, they're talking about the ORIGINAL Jem, not this movie. The creators of this movie edited it to make it sound like they were praising this movie, which has nothing to do with the original show. On one hand, you have people like me. A guy who didn't care about the original show and found some enjoyment out of this movie, so having it have nothing to do with the show was a plus for me. However, to a Jem fan, this is 95% of the time gonna be EXTREMELY offensive, but they make it sound like they're loving it.

Layla Mason No, it's not because the fans of the animated series are jealous, it's because it's nothing like the series, and it alienated the original fans. John Chu, Jason Blum, Scooter Braun and any other producer involved, messed up. 😃
Many people on here have said that it didn't resemble the animated series, and that it alienated the original fans, myself included, and the co-creator, Christy Marx, who made a cameo above as Lindsey Pearce, even said that in a recent interview. 😃
I will find the link and I will add the actual time point where Christy and the interviewer Michael Mercy talked about this movie during the interview, which is about Jem and everything else that Christy has ever been involved in. 😃
Just recently, Jason Blum, as mentioned above, admitted that he did mess up with this, and that he shouldn't have made the movie the way it was, and even apologised, which is good, but it's still too little, too late, almost three years later. 😃

Rio (Ryan Guzman) meets Lindsey Pierce (The Original Jem and the Holograms creator Christy Marx) during the concert. She said, "What are they like name their band called?" Then Rio said, "How about Jem and the Holograms." She liked, "Not bad". So that's why Kimber, Aja and Shana aren't being called, "The Holograms" yet until the end Rio calling the band "Jem and the Holograms!".
That's creator/writer of Jem and the Holograms. The two voices of Jem/Jerrica Benton had cameos in the movie which are Samantha Newark who is the speaking voice of Jem and Jerrica & Britta Philips who is the singing voice of Jem.
Those cameos did nothing for this terrible film!

You were born premature 1lb 4oz? Me too but I'm not sure about the oz but I was diagnosed with autism(ASD) at 3 years old which my Interest Is technology mostly. I also have cerebral palsy which Is why I'm flexible.

The movie was good as itself but I’m upset that they claimed it’s the live action of Jem. They could of made a movie with the same plot and has it be about different people and more people would like. Because now it’s not an insult to the original cause without comparing it to the original it’s really good because it wouldn’t have to live up to such a great show but become it’s own good show. Like take a fan of the original at have them read the plot and script but don’t tell them the name or the name of the characters and they would agree it was a good show but the minute you tell them it’s jem they digger cause this isn’t jem and the hologram it just has the name
I LOVED this movie and knew all the songs lyrics... But...over time I stopped watching it and forgot ALL about it and the songs I remembered about it flipping though this phones searches so now I am trying to remember the lyrics to the songs but I started crying because I...... I forgot it and I just feel bad 🙀 but I will remember the lyrics and watch it again 😸

Nothing to do with the GLAM of the 80's. Not glam rock, not glam metal, modern Pop is NOT JEM!!!!!! If teen nowadays listen this type of music it's ok for them, but it ISN'T Jem. If you say silly things like "times changed/ teens prefer this type of music / the directors had to ADAPT it to modern audiences" etc , that is NO EXCUSE. And also, tastes are tastes. The 80's glam rock and metal was amazing for my generation and it's still listened by much younger ppl, the style of music I listen here sounds so common, so dull, an average Pop, NOTHING OUTSTANDING and you guys/girls defending that "the music is OK" didn't understand a thing. Period

@@rubyweymouth6843 according the film Jerrica states she moved to her aunt's house from LA when she was 8 which was 10 years ago & when there's a recorded video of her playing with MLP FiM toys, but it was recorded in 1999 & the weren't released until the 2010's. Also if Jerrica was 8 in 1999, she would've been 18 10 years later. So they film must be set in 2009 but actually 2010s & everyone's using up to date technology. Not to mention the Google Earth map copyright 2012.

Marsa Andari Oh no, movie makers use Universal owned archive footage of him (who also made and own the Jem movie) talking about the Lego Movie and toys in general, and that he "dated" one of his sister's Jem dolls, but edited to sound like he and Jem dated for a while, which wouldn't have happened, nor makes any sense, as Chris is a few years older than me and Jem is a teenager in this movie. Hehe. 😄
I'm confusing the original Jem and the holograms Jem has a microphone she's the singer and the rest of the holograms sing with her but she doesn't use a guitar you never ever see her use a guitar that's okay but whatever

Apparently, other people and myself were told by a fellow guy, who likes the movie, on one, or maybe two, Jem fan pages (one was to tell people to avoid the movie) that it was a love letter to the fans of the animated movie by Jon Chu, and not a set-up misusing original fans' video footage that we all thought.
Jon Chu directed and co-produced this movie alongside Jason Blum (of Blumhouse Productions) and Scooter Braun (manager of Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande). There were some female producers, and other female workers on this movie, but they never got a say in adding any female strength and power to the movie like in the animated series.
The fans who made their video footage about Jem, the animated series, had to sign waiver claims that they wouldn't/couldn't take anyone to court, so I've heard, so Jon Chu could do whatever he wanted with the footage. I don't know what he was using this footage for any more, and who is telling the truth.
The video footage just clashes with the movie anyway. The movie should have been based on the animated series, Hasbro/Universal should have let Christy Marx write it and produce it, and they should have put more money into the movie instead of only 5 million dollars, that either only they offered, or that Jon Chu said was enough for making the movie.
Hasbro should have let Christy reboot the series later on in time as well, and then for her to find new ideas for it when she felt refreshed, as she admitted that she felt burnt out with ideas towards the end of the series, as the show ran for three years at that point (1985-1988).

For the record, the fan videos may be talking about cartoon, but they're still talking about Jem. The director just thought it'd be a good idea to put them into the movie. So they're not talking about the movie itself. It's breaking the fourth wall or anything. Therefore, it's not disrespectful, more like a love letter.

•number one, the makers of this movie scammed these Jem fans into making them talk about how good the original Jem was, but they edit their vids to make it seem like they love the movie Jem. not to mention, this movie even straight up stole videos from other people who have NO involvement nor attachment into the movie whatsoever. this was incredibly disrespectful. •number two, the whitewashing of the casting…. they literally had the nerve to whitewash three characters, with them choosing biracial actresses to play as Shana and Aja (since in the cartoon, Shana is supposed to be full black and Aja is supposed to be full asian), as well as casting a white man to play as Rio (who is supposed to be of Brazilian descent) •number three, the huge age gap between Jerrica (who was sixteen) and Rio (who was a college student) •number four, the outfits. im not even gonna explain about why they didn’t even tried with their outfits. they’re NOT even that good, mostly Shana.. she had it the worst especially since she’s supposed to be the fashionista of the group •number five, they took away a lot of true meanings about what Jem is truly all about. it wasn’t about being famous, it was about the tough struggles of life. the original cartoon dealt with things like abuse, drugs, the loss of family members •number six, the fact that they brought in Christy Marx (the creator of the original Jem) in the movie was just incredibly disrespectful, she was not proud of the project and the director of this movie did her SO dirty

I can’t be the only one who actually loved this movie. It is honestly not as bad as people seem to think. Yes it is not like the cartoon but that doesn’t make it horrible.

palancox Maybe if the sequel had happened, Raya Alonso, the new Latina Hologram from the animated series would have come in and she would have taken over playing the drums, then Shana would have become the second guitarist just like what happened in the animated series. 😃
