Hi! I love the way you teach. I played fiddle when I was young and just ran out of time to play. I started again and early onset parkinsons disease got in the way. I am now able to start playing again. You have been really helpful in helping me relearn songs and learn new songs. Thank you for your patient way of teaching.
Yay! My first song in my first week of fiddling officially under my belt! Your song teaching method has encouraged me greatly! Just 900 times or so more to refine it and all set! (LOL) Amazing how difficult it is to maintain a consistently good sound on the violin, even through such a short, repetitive piece. What a complex instrument!
I am 52 and have been playing for just 3 weeks. I'm loving your teaching, I can nearly get this tune. Thanks from Cape Clear island. Sorry about your cat.
Thanks for the kind words . Glad you find these videos useful. I started a subscriber site at fiddlehed.com last year. The UA-cam lessons will continue to be available but the site has guided lessons with tabs, play alongs, etc. You can have free access to the site for the forum, blog, request list and the first few beginner lessons. There is also a Fiddlehed Facebook page. Let me repeat, the free UA-cam videos (hundreds of them) will still be out there but depending on what your goals are, you might find the site helpful.
Hello from cloudy England. I've just turned 60 and picked up a fiddle for the first time. I'm already totally addicted. Your lessons are a real inspiration, simple, fun and incredibly useful. I've been smiling my head off through this one. Thank you!!!
I'm 67 just bought a student violin got about 8 hours practice on right now I play everything by ear because it's hard for me to read notes I've learned a few songs from you already they're not perfect but every time I try to get better I wish your song showed more fingering down below it gives me more time to write them down I like the way you teach
Thanks for sharing, James. You may find the full lesson helpful, offered on the Fiddlehed website. It provides play along tracks, written tabs, sheet music and more. We offer a trial membership to the FiddleHed course. Sign up here: fiddlehed.com
Just bought the violin for my BD (63) in Oct 2017 - learned all scales, now this is the second song from you I learned. LOVE it. Thanks for this tutorial.
I took up playing the violin back in late January of this year. At age 45, I have no musical history. I actually can now play this song. Thanks. You are a great teacher.
I appreciate you breaking things down. I’m a classically trained pianist and play several traditional band instruments, but have always wanted to fiddle around and learn by ear. Thanks for sharing the music theory as you go. I’m ready for some double stops now on this one and have watched your video regarding such. Keep up the great work. You’re a wonderful teacher.
Many thanks for this easy way of learning one of my favourite tunes, I do not read music so the instructions for me are perfect. Currently learning traditional scottish music with feis rois in Dingwall, Ross-Shire, Scotland, by ear then by music, which for me is A0 A1, A2 etc etc
Thank you for this video! I find the way you break it down, into each section, so very helpful. I am glad to have found you...I can see a lot of watching/studying your videos ahead of me...
Ed, do you know there is a FiddleHed Facebook page and FiddleHed.com where there are learning guides? Although Fiddlehed.com has subscriptions, it is also possible to access resources for free. Check it out, if you haven't. Enjoy that fiddle!
FiddleHed , I have visited your website...I did not notice anything available, without subscription...I am retired, and can't afford that level of membership...I will just have to enjoy your UTUBE offerings, although I do wish you'd include more Tabs, on those...but, I do understand the challenge and desire, to be paid for your hard work, as an Artist.
Ed, go the fiddlehed.com and click on the little box on the top third of the screen that says FREE LESSONS. You have access to only a few beginner lessons BUT you also have also to the blog and the forum. Hundreds of videos will still be available on UA-cam.
Well over here in Demark is cloudy and dark, too. We don't complain though, and you're doing great man. Yeah, youre good when youre breaking it up espicially when youre doing the Ashokan Farewell. The B part is a bit tricky.
This video was a big help in getting me started on the tune :) Thanks for making it! As a beginner, I love that people like you take the time to make these videos. My short little lessons go so fast, I often use youtube to fill in the gaps.
I just discovered your videos. These are awesome! I've been playing for almost 20 years, but am needing some fine tuning since I don't get outside of my house playing anymore. So thanks! Do you have any experience with teaching young children?Like a 2-3 year old?
Picked up fiddling a few months ago. This is my Dad's favorite waltz, and I'd like to play it for him and Mom to dance to in July for their 66th wedding anniversary. I'm fing the A3 D3 to be difficult....any tips on how to roll that 3rd finger? Thanks!
Great tune! Thanks! Hey, how do you differentiate the different notes with similar names in your head? Like 1G and 3E are both A notes but they are located on different strings and in different spots on sheet music. I'm having trouble even wording this question in a way that a Google search will get a helpful result. Can you help me word this right or point me in some meaningful direction? Thanks!
+FiddleHed Thanks for the tip! I'm grasping a strong but still very rudimentary appreciation for music theory. Thanks for dropping clues about that in your videos!
I am fifty one years old this week....and I think I might be crushin' on this little fiddle man....
Now you’ve really made me blush like a ten year old girl!

Yes. Practice raised third finger on G string. it will help you on the B part.

Slow repetition. Isolate a few notes. Do it over and over. What a wonderful occasion.

+2partsunknown Well, G1 is a lower octave, A0, is the next octave, and E3 is the next. If you learned to read actual music, this would make more sense
+FiddleHed Thanks for the tip! I'm grasping a strong but still very rudimentary appreciation for music theory. Thanks for dropping clues about that in your videos!
Just started getting into playing.
What's the tape on the Bow for?
I think it's the range of where your notes should be played. Outside that your tone starts dwindling.
good
What key is this in?
