I've seen this exact Cold Steel video here on UA-cam. From what I've seen, what we saw in this video was just them warming up. But, there's a part two to this same video in this same session/setting. The video is called "Cold Steel 2023 - Show Music" posted by the same person (rbass311). The second video is where the drumming gets even MORE insane, EVEN MORE mind blowing, and even more phenomenal. I'd say, the second video blew my mind as much as the Blue Devils 1995 tenor break did. Thus, watch the second part of this video, and maybe you guys could review that video too.
Hey guys I’m ColdSteel 2k12. Our Bass line is split up into 3 sections; tonal, mid, and drop basses. The small toms you mentioned are called tenor drums. Then multi tenors (6’s) snares and cymbals.
Hey guys, I marched snare at Elizabeth City State University in '18-19'. Show style marching is based on the tradition, history and community around the school the band is home to. As far as drumline, most of the work is done for drumline battles, floorshows, recruitments and field/stand music. I would recommend looking at Norfolk State University , North Carolina Central University , Bethune Cookman University, Jackson State University, and Virginia State University
Definitely! Cold Steel can put on a show for the eyes. They play some stuff that has you like wow how long did it take to learn and clean that up but also do stuff that is eye pleasing and entertaining but Million Dollar Funk Squad have your ears in heaven with their playing. They may not be as crowd pleasing as cold steel but for those who are percussionist you will have your ears made love to for their entire floor shows
@@lazurusredd8682 TRADITIONAL show style drumlines march tenors that’s what sets them apart funk squad is not a traditional style line they do something called rudimental funk🤦🏽♂️
Recently just checked a video titled "MD Thursday 2024: the warmup" you guys need to see and should react to. There are a few videos of the same performance with some crazy stuff all throughout, especially the cymbal playing. This is also a side of the activity I do not know much about so thanks for making this video!
Checkout NCAT Coldsteel at PASIC ‘16, “Best of Both Worlds”. Some of the questions and discussions you all were having were overviewed during that presentation
Props for featuring them. They performed at PASIC in recemt years. Also check Norfolk State's drumline, they performed at PASIC as well recently. Both groups are extremely skilled. No school wants to battle these groups they'll destroy all styles in their way because they're so well versed in both.
So I did get to spend a year at nccu, one of At&Ts regional marching rivals. I only got to do the line for a couple rehearsal before international student shit kicked in and I had to drop the class. Since then I’ve done a jazz adjacent big band run by a professor from Ghana up here in Canada. So I can firmly say the style of hbcu drumming is like a mid point between rudimental drumming and that deeper African tradition. The single tenors and bass unisons interact the same way the multiple voices of African drumming call and respond to each other, often using very familiar patterns to that style. So in a weird way even though HBCUs have racked up a reputation for splitting less, they’re really doing it more, because even the unisons are just split with a different section.
Would love an episode with you guys bringing on someone who understands the culture and can educate us on it. Kinda like yall mentioned during the video
I think you said "Band Fest"....if you did, Band Fest is an event at the rose parade where a few days before the parade all the groups perform their competitive field shows or half time shows for the public
Not a drummer but have respect for them, grew up marching corp style in HS and show style in college, love to see dialogue like this the type of people i was around in HS talked trash about show style bands for not being “clean” as a musician you should have a certain level of respect for different styles of playing.
Yall should react to Jackson States War and Thunder Drumline it’s very country and Southern, I think yall would find it very different then what yall usually react and watch.
So many HBCU lines are severely underrated. I think "Drumline" the movie is to blame because they did quite a disservice to the culture by showcasing "dirty" drumming in the movie. It's definitely not a fair representation of the quality that these lines are capable of
Nah if it were auto tune it’d be way less dirt. The first clip is early in the marching season like September usually they’re on their first or second maybe even 3rd game. The second clip is rose bowl which is after the season. Lines especially hbcu lines mesh very well as time goes on and the newer kids get the concepts and expectations down packed even more.

you guys will LOVE them

Sick, I love that y’all are reacting to lines outside of the corps style range! Keep up the good work, guys!
Many have shared your video with Harvey lol He is quite aware. Loved thus video so much! Such positivity and support!
There are a few lines that merge both styles very well. BCU, NSU, VSU, NCAT, to name a few.
Norfolk state university. In my opinion is the best at mixing the two styles together
Nah They don’t march tenors‼️funk squad is more rudimental funk than traditional show style drumming
@ yeah, I agree. M$FS focuses more on technique and sound quality VS Cold steel who is straight up traditional show style with decent sound quality
@@AgentK4006every drumline doesn't require Tenors, MDFS is living proof of it
@@lazurusredd8682 TRADITIONAL show style drumlines march tenors that’s what sets them apart funk squad is not a traditional style line they do something called rudimental funk🤦🏽♂️
@AgentK4006 I'm well aware they're not a traditional drumline and what rudimental funk is, I'm Legion 02
I second and third everyone in the comments. MDFS (Norfolk State University) drumline is definitely worth checking out and reacting too.
Harvey is so talented and has been doing great things amazing video fellas

The second clip is called CS Style.

Yes Sir You guys are right. I am COLD STEEL
React to Norfolk State University’s Million dollar funk squad. Bethel high school block and pasic 2023 performance I would recommend. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Would love an episode with you guys bringing on someone who understands the culture and can educate us on it. Kinda like yall mentioned during the video
They should bring in Harvey and Ralph it would be awesome
Tnanks for the video.
Those toms drums that you are talking about we call thoses chest tenor drums
7:22
They are in 3rd position. Ballet is still so involved. That some Phantom Regiment shit
The groove is what I like, DCI cats could learn about the groove that was in drum corp but has lost its way in the last century
I think you said "Band Fest"....if you did, Band Fest is an event at the rose parade where a few days before the parade all the groups perform their competitive field shows or half time shows for the public
The “Tom” is actually called a tenor drum in show style
Also check out Norfolk and Bethune cookman
💪😎For The Cold Steel Algorithm!💪😎

React to Norfolk state university Drumline they good also in the North. Closest Hbcu line to corps style
Watch the PASIC performance. A lot of your questions will be answered.

Ralph Nader marched cold steel in like 05 06 around that time.
He marched at Hampton
You’d love him and Harvey’s byos and black fire vids from nyc back in the day though!
Yall should react to Jackson States War and Thunder Drumline it’s very country and Southern, I think yall would find it very different then what yall usually react and watch.
The Tom that y’all call it’s actually a chest tenor drum. The things you call tenors are sextuplets.
Jackson state university

Calling auto-tune on some of this
Yall love to claim auto tune, you ever see them in person recently?

That’s our natural sound come check us out in person before assuming. What you get in the clip you will get in person.
