    I just got a PhD application rejected and was almost quitting because I thought I refined the application to the best with necessary consultations. Seeing this video of yours, I just got resuscitated and ready to give in more .
    Much love and respect from here.

    The quality of a phd student I would value most is taking initiatives. It's research, no one gets ideas or clear road map on how to do things dropped on them from heaven. Even when the students need extra help, guidance or support they should take the initiative to ask or talk to others about it. It's not going to work if they are just passively waiting, the passage of time alone will not solve the problems.

    Thanks Andy! During the up and downs of PhD life, I think tenacity is one of the best quality to keep you moving inspite of so many disappointments and rejections.

    Thanks, Andy! Amazing talk. You are such a skilled and enthusiastic communicator. Your energy levels are so high and contagious every time you speak or share something. You continue to inspire many Ph.D. students and candidates like myself. Please keep up the good work you do.

      He truly does. Sometimes, when I run out of inspiration, I watch his videos and I am inspired again. Doing a PhD drains one in all ramifications. There are days my brain is literally bursting and my study table scare me. Having someone to look up to is key.

    Can you please explain more about the Enthusiasm on this video. Also, how a student can be more enthusiastic during the research.
    Thanks once again, sorry for the Cold and get well soon

    "Head down bum up" must mean something completely different to Brits. There's a song in the US by DJ Isaac with slightly different wording that I don't feel like I can write here

    Slightly separate from tenacity is the "thick skin and fighting uphill-battles spirit" that is so so helpful when it comes to handling the gluteus maximus-sepatator referee that goes to great lengths to misunderstand and misrepresent your submitted paper. It is very important to not become deflated and broken but filled with fight-back spirit when met with completely unreasonable, unfair and unscientific claims by a scientist of "higher status" and prestige. This will happen to many PhD students (and later to post-docs and researchers at every stage of their careers.)
    Few potential PhD-supervisors would scoff at a couple of 10s of M£ worth of funding-contributions either. (Just to reveal my scientist-credentials.)

    Thanks for sharing. I have a thought about being enthusiastic. If a PhD student is being too enthusiastic, would he/she appear stubborn?

    Professors also value psychopharmacologically and psychotherapeutically-enhanced candidates. This kind of enhancement improves the manifestation of all the desired qualities mentioned in the video.

    Andy, I found an excellent supervisor but he can only be a co-supervisor. Another thing is that I am inspired to work with this supervisor, but the university is not well known. What do you think I should do? Go for a well known university or go for the excellent supervisor whom I want to learn from?

    • @viajeraeterna3
      @viajeraeterna3 9 місяців тому

      Believe me, student-supervisor relationship is so much more important. The goal is to get a PhD, you can go to Oxford and not finish because of your supervisor.

    I have a simpler definition for critical thinking - Being able to think twice about what your supervisor said to you.
