Hello Ben I just received my very first DA rose in a 2 quart pot ( it’s Lady Of Shallot). Im in Dallas Texas. How long should I wait before I transfer her to a bigger pot? Shoul I trim some of its leaves so that the roots can have more resources to grow? Thank you in advance.
Hi, and thank you for your question, it very much depends on when it was placed into its pot. I never advise turning them out if they have recently potted up bare root stock lift the pot up and take a look underneath you looking for white root growth coming through the drainage holes in the bottom. Don’t put it out until you see those roots Please don’t trim the foliage. It is the foliage that is generating the sugars and energy to grow the roots in the first place the two need to be in balance. Keep it well watered and look after it for the next coming weeks.

I’ve ordered a bunch of DA bare roots roses but they’re not going to get to me till next year so when I saw that the 2 quart potted rose were available to be shipped mid-May I just couldn’t stop myself ☺️☺️. One very popular lady gardener here on youtube says that if one ever wants to grow roses in their garden then it better be a David Austin. And so that’s exactly what I did because I trust the experts!! Thank you and pls keep posting videos about your garden and the magnificent DA roses!💐💕
Wow, I always thought potted roses were well established in their pots and ready to be planted in the ground. I had thought they were preferred over bare root. All the roses i have wanted, they only had as bare root,so that’s good.
Thanks for all the great info! I'm waiting for my bare root James Galway Rose from David Austin. My question is about the first year's growth. Should I do any pruning on it at all? Or just work on training it? And I'm wondering if it might even bloom the first year? I'm a newbie and your videos are most helpful.
Hello Ben, once again a very informative video - thank you! I usually order bare root roses, but this spring I received two roses in large pots from a friend. I want to plant them in the ground in the next few days. Large pots and one hand is difficult. 😏😉 Can you please give me a tip on what I should look out for? With the 7 David Austin (bare root) roses I'm anxiously awaiting, there won't be as much headache. 😂😂😂

It will bloom yes I can assure you, and it will need some pruning
