“Happy” é a música mais minimalista no meu cd “Froot”. Eu demorei muito para escreve-la, na verdade, provavelmente algo em torno de 3 meses, porque eu escrevi os versos e eu não sabia exatamente o que eu queria dizer no refrão, então eu tinha que descobrir o que eu estava querendo expressar tematicamente.
“Froot” é a música mais excêntrica no cd, tem uma produção inspirada no disco, o que chocou até eu mesma, porque eu não gosto de músicas funk, mas de alguma forma isso se introduziu na música e é definitivamente uma das músicas mais estranhas que eu já fiz.
A terceira música se chama “I’m a Ruin”, é sobre o outro lado da relação, sobre o qual não é muito falado, que é quando você tem que terminar com alguém e você tem que lidar com a culpa de machucar alguém que você amava.
“Blue”, essa é uma das músicas que soam pop no cd, é bastante eletrônica, de novo é bastante inspirada na década de 70. Eu me diverti muito criando ela, foi a primeira música que eu gravei com o David Kosten.
A quinta música se chama “Forget”, que é uma das minhas favoritas, e é basicamente o único refrão que eu escrevi que só tem uma palavra, “Forge-e-et”. E eu escrevi isso quando eu estava extremamente de ressaca no dia seguinte de uma festa do Brit Awards. Ela meio que encapsula toda a vibe do cd, que é basicamente observar minha vida de um ponto de vista distante.
A próxima música se chama “Gold”, eu escrevi essa em Marksburg, na Alemanha, muito obrigada. Eu estava como abertura do Coldplay na época, e eu estava em tour com o meu cd “Electra Heart”. Eu tinha um dia de folga nesse hotel lindo do interior e eu estava me sentindo muito frustrada, então eu escrevi essa música.
A próxima música é “Can’t Pin Me Down”, essa é uma das minhas favoritas, é sobre evitar ser definida, constantemente definida por pessoas, eu meio que escrevi com mulheres em mente, mas eu acho que pode ser aplicada para qualquer um. É uma das faixas que eu estou mais animada para que os fãs escutem.
A próxima música se chama “Solitaire”, que é uma das músicas mais minimalistas no cd, mas é importante tematicamente. É meio sobre conseguir se defender e manter uma personalidade forte apesar do que estiver acontecendo ao redor de você.
A próxima música se chama “Better Than That”, e essa foi escrita bem no começo, e era um indício de como minha música iria evoluir e soar, porque eu realmente queria criar esse som de banda, ser produzida como uma banda. É provavelmente a única música do cd que tem um pouco de malícia nela.
“Weeds”, “Weeds” é a próxima música. Para ser honesta, é a música que eu menos me identifico agora, parece muito distante de mim, mas era sobre a sensação de quando você está em uma relação e você não superou completamente o relacionamento anterior e você está deixando isso afetar o seu atual. Então, é, esse era a matéria bruta pra essa.
Então, a próxima música se chama “Savages”, essa na verdade foi inspirada por algo que eu li em um jornal na época dos atentados de Boston, dos atentados da maratona de Boston, e eu estava tão... eu não sei, eu estava com tanto nojo que você tem essas pessoas correndo por caridade para salvar a vida de outras pessoas e você tem outras pessoas no mundo que estão fazendo bombas para explodir essas pessoas. Então meio que começou sobre esse assunto, mas eu também estava muito mexida com a quantidade de estupros que apareciam nas notícias e que tipo notícias nós estávamos tendo, tudo parecia estar muito, muito cheio de histórias horríveis, que, sabe, obviamente acontecem o tempo todo, mas estavam recebendo mais atenção e estavam sendo mais noticiadas então eu queria escrever uma música que explorasse o que significa ser humano, ao invés de condenar essas coisas, é mais sobre reconhecer essas partes de nós e essa parte da natureza humana.
E a última música do cd se chama “Immortal”, que é inspirada pela ideia de quando você morre você não pode deixar nada para trás a não ser as suas memórias. E eu tive a ideia para ela quando eu estava na Polônia e eu visitei um memorial de guerra, e eu li um comentário em um site, um site turístico que estava fazendo uma review do memorial e que dizia que, sabe, que não é muito bonito mas que merece a visitação para manter as memórias dessas pessoas vivas e pelo que elas passaram e isso realmente ficou comigo, então foi aí que eu comecei a escrever essa música.

It's even more crazy cause she wrote every single song on the album, and didn't have some other guy right it for her and have it become a big single. That's why I love Marina so much. She's a real musician
She really is an artist! And not everyone who writes mainstream songs about a typical love story or a breakup... but Marina always writes about important topics and about her deepest emotions ... I love how different she is compared to other 'artists' ...
Interesting how she said that with Savages she wanted to explain what it is to be human and now has a song in her newest album that‘s called To Be Human and is thematically very similar to Savages.
