  • Orienterring or Orientation running with map and compass
In this instalment of ‘doing cool Norwegian activities with a pro’, we take on orienteering for beginners in the Norwegian woods.
This sport of orienteering is as much of a mental test as if it a physical one, as competitors use a map and compass to navigate through difficult terrain, searching for checkpoints.
Orientation running is growing in popularity, especially throughout Europe, and in Scandinavia in particular. Here we learn that navigating through the woods, without the use of an iPhone or GPS, is surprising challenging - especially under time pressure.
Our Norwegian expert on this occasion is Cornelius Bjork, a professional orienteer, who is given the difficult task of teaching us how to successfully navigate through the forest at Songsvann, just outside of Oslo in the sport of orienteering.
Orientation running and Norsk Orientering has 20.000 active members.
Orienteering with map and compass is not just a Norwegian sport, it’s a world wide orientation sport.
Orienteering on a professional level can happen at competitions like Venla Relay and O-Ringen and it’s Norwegian Name is orienteringsløb or Oløb for short.
Besides our lovely Orientation runner Cornelius, you also have people like Thierry Gueorgiou , Maja Alm , Andreas Kubicki , Daniel Hubmann and Hugo Lillieström.
Thank you to Norsk Orientering for creating a cool course for us and showing us how fun orienteering with maps and compass is and how maybe orienterings for beginners is like.

      Thank you!
It’s a really great way to get out in the woods! We really had fun so definitely something we would do again. We’ve also learned that cross country ski orienteering is a thing👀

Dødsing. I am not brave enough to do it.But I remember going to the pool when I was a child and doing something similar to call girls attention.

We are happy you watched the episode until the end, hoping you enjoyed it.
Our lovely pro told us about the preventive effects and slowing the disease that orienteering has when it comes to dementia. You can also read some published papers on Medical News today. I’m sure you can find enough sources and also take our comment with a grain of salt.
