- The Authority On All Things R&B !
On this week's episode of The R&B Money Podcast, Tank and J Valentine sit down with legendary Bryan-Michael Cox. The episode starts off discussing Bryan's early days growing up in Houston and being surrounded by music from a young age.
Bryan got his start playing piano at church, inspired by his friend Raymond Angry's incredible talent. He began making beats on a Yamaha keyboard in his teens. After connecting with producer Greg Curtis, Bryan started working with artists like Destiny's Child on early demos.
His career soon took off working with Jermaine Dupri and So So Def artists like Jagged Edge. They discuss Bryan's process and influences at the time as well as working with Usher on Confessions. Bryan shares stories behind big hits like Burn, Confessions Pt 2, Let's Get Married and more.
The episode is a masterclass from one of the greatest songwriters and producers in R&B history. Bryan offers invaluable lessons about artistry, collaborations, longevity and what it takes to make classics. His catalog is untouched and this conversation highlights his genius. R&B Money is my adult Saturday morning cartoons.🎉
I love this for us!! I be so excited when I can actually catch LIVE. I be 😂 at myself at my big age giddy I really do love it for me. We deserve joy, passion, nostalgia, celebration and information.
Real talk💯
Talk that talk
For sure!!!😂
That’s so true!!! 😂
Am I the only one that stops the interview to listen to the songs they mention? So many gems
I would but I listen on the go.
No you are not!!!!!! I swear I jut went and found the Gap Band song when he said it!!!!
Thought I was the only one lol…you gotta do it!!!
YES!!! I did!!! LOL 🙋🏽♀️😂
Yes, I do!
In 10 years this will be the most important music information channel in history. This reminds me of VH1 BEHIND THE MUSIC in the 90s
💯💯💯💯
For real
Oooh yes that's it VH1 behind the Music great example !!!
Absolutely!
It was YK Osiris ladies and gentlemen….. “i would give you the world baby girl”….
I'm almost 40 years old. I started listening to R&B in the mid 90's. This POD is everything to me. I appreciate you. THE AUTHORITY!
same!
Manifesting a darkchild and dallas austin interview. These writers and producers got me in a chokehold🔥
B. Cox practically interviewed himself. My boy was speed talking at points. He’s beyond passionate. The music is in him and he’s in the music. It’s beautiful that him and JD had that instant chemistry to create what they did for Jagged Edge. I would consider that a divine connection. Jagged Egde had me in a chokehold in high school. I remember B. Cox from making the bad and for writing for Mariah. Def a legend. Wish we found out what he spent the 20k on or the $7,500. Thank you R&B Money. Looking forward to seeing Jermaine on the pod 🙏🏾
B. Cox had some great stories!!
He's indeed the music man and you can see the passion in him. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview.
He’s a talker, and I have no complaints!😂 shoutout to B. Cox and his detailed stories
When I saw a 3hour interview I was like dang! But now I see why because yea he definitely gives details for every part of his life. 😄
Same. No complaints at all! 😂😂😂
No complaints. Loved every second of it!
😂😂😂😂
I learned that he grew up part of his life in my hometown-Htown! What an awesome credit!
B. Cox held 2000s R&B down Period!!
The longer the rnb money interview, the happier my saturday is . ❤ thanks guys
Okay I’m the same way! I repeat 🔁
The connection B. Cox explained between Confessions and Ignition at 1:53:28 is the type of revelation that makes these interviews special. Much respect to everyone involved!
I LOVE Jay's laugh 😂
His laugh gives me life😉🥰
He giggles. It’s so pure!
This podcast is the ONLY Podcast that can get me to sit still on what is supposed to be my weekly cleaning day and keep me engaged! I saw the time on the episode and didn’t even flinch! I’m ready for next week! 🙌🏾🔥❤❤❤❤
I sat and folded laundry for the whole three hours. I have to make time for them while clean!
And I could go for a PART 2!! ❤
SAME!!!!!
Me too! This podcast literally stops me in my tracks. I have to whatever I can do sitting....fold laundry, prep for cooking, sitting exercises or what the hell ever.. I'm sitting to watch R&B Money that's for dam sure🥰😍🤩❤
Didn’t flinch! There are multiple past episodes that should have been three hours as well. Namely Johnta 🥹
3 hours?! Tank and J. going crazy. THE AUTHORITY ON ALL THINGS R&B
When I saw that it was 3 hours I was like wow… I know that bcox catalog is long but Mann I did not know it was that long!!! Also he may be the first interview on r&b podcast that was 3 hours!!!
THE AUTHORITY!
It’s B Cox so they had to
As soon as he said D'Angelo, Tank felt it in his soul
As a "Credit Reader" kid and music history lover, I've had nothing but respect and admiration for this man's work since I was probably a teenager. I've been waiting on his name to be called on the pod! #FavoritePodcast #AnotherBCOXJOINT
Me: starts singing “Chris Brown - Winner” another B. Cox Joint 😂
@@504TaylorAnd I’m singing Day 26 “Don’t Fight The Feeling”…
Me too!
Me, too!!
Facts!
I’m a credit reader, Brian’s childhood sounds like mine. My mom would be outsideeee, listening to music, buying records the whole 9 remember it so vividly.
mine too and they are such great memories.
@@Sam.Floweryes!
I've studied B COX Production for years. So happy he is on here. Because of legends like him I make RNB
I live right here in the A too and write r&b hits like him! Let’s collab and land a deal with LVRN!
reminds me of the Kci episode when all three harmonized, INCREDIBLE!!! 😂
This is insanely good!! The connections y’all have . Y’all are literally the descendants of black American music passed from generations. From the church to Motown , Houston, Atlanta, Miami, L.A. full credit to you guys. You never really know what black Americans have built but it is all passed down. This is the dopest podcast ever!!
This is Masterclass. Should be taught to young passionate musicians and his zeal could be transferable to other carriers in life.
It really is.
I love that they just let him talk and tell his story
Finally!!! Someone mentions Lady by DAngelo as their top 5 R&B song!!!!!
Classic timeless record! 🔥
Oh this is going to be another great episode. The impact of Bryan Michael Cox in this R&B game has to be saluted
PERIODT
#RealBad
Definitely gotta get Darkchild Rodney Jerkins on the Pod! 🙏
One of my favorite Mariah songs is Breakdown with Bone Thugs and Harmony her vocals on that song unmatched and the marriage between her and Bone Thugs is magic !!
Yes and her songwriting on that song was pure genius!! 🔥
Ooooh, three hours though?
*sits and watches every second*
Confessions to Emancipation to Breakthrough is so wild
Legendary 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I love it when J and Tank harmonize… remembering songs 🔥🔥🔥
2:30:27 the RAWR takes me out EVERY. TIME! I LOVE it and rewind the Top 5 and I Ain't Saying No Names songs at LEAST twice every episode. My 17 yr old asked "does he do this everytime?" I said "YES!"
This interview is Hittin different- when he breaks down “it was THE soundtrack; records were Part of your living room” … “it was a different kind of attachment”, Maaaan my eyes watered thinking of Friday nights and weekends in the early 80s as a little girl in my apartment in NY and the gatherings my parents had and the Unwinding from the week that Always happened… and MUSIC WAS ALWAYS THERE at the Center- those were the Best times and shaped my entire life♥️ MUSIC will Always be the Love letter my Dad gave to me and I am SO grateful🙏🏽
Yes. That was my favorite part. I remember Saturday mornings in the 80s whereas if you walk past any house in Philly, you would hear: Prince, MJ, Debarge, LL Cool J, Run DMC amongst others. Then the type of music played at Family Reunions: Gap Band, SOS Band, Loose Ends. Then on Sundays, you would hear Gospel Music: The Winans, The Clark Sisters, The Hawkins singer.
@@ltiya75islearning82 speak on it!!! Yesssss! Music was the fabric of Life!! PS (sports aside 😂) NY loves Phillay! 🙌🏽♥️
Music all weekend long, big speakers. Music vibrating all over the city.
Dope interview. Since y’all are hear in Atlanta you gotta get Jermaine Dupree on this show. It wouldn’t be right without him!👏🏾👏🏾🔥🔥
You already know they will lol
And Bangladesh! He's actually behind a lot of hits.
The Canon of interviews that R&B money podcast has put together is incredible this is just another one of those brilliant interviews coming up.
With the Charismatic duo of Tank and J Valentine. and the Brilliance of Bryan Michael Cox as their guest and the lovely platform of the day of Saturday.Great watching couldnt come sooner.🎉🎉❤
Can we get more legacy acts on here? I'd love to see Patti, Smokey, Mary, Mariah, Toni Braxton.
Ouuu and Chaka Khan
Especially Toni and Mariah
@@cortezmiller1899 I feel Mariah gon require a lot more work. Like you gonna have to get the lighting right for her as she is someone who only allows herself to be filmed on a particular side lol
Brian McKnight. Monica. Brandy.
JE ‘What you tryna do for it’ blew me away when I first heard it. I literally stopped in my tracks and was like WHO IS THIS??!!!! Song staying on repeat for months!!!
Yessss 🔥🔥🔥 I love Jagged Edge
I feel like a broken record at this point, but these gentlemen just don’t miss! Another 🔥 episode
We need Stevie J on the Podcast
Real shit!!
I want to know more about Stevie!
Na fr Stevie was the plug in the 90s he don't get his flowers as he should
Agreed. Let's go Stebee!!
For sho!!!!
You can not mention legend producers without mentioning The Bryan Michael Cox period! I love it and his whole catalog! ❤ Thank You Tank and J! 👏🏾
Wish they talked about “Since You’ve been gone” that is one of the best written songs of that time and Day 26 was full of dope singers .
Day26 are still dope singers
That song right there doesn’t get enough love ! Whew !!!❤
I love the section around 2:36:00 where they praise Usher’s vocals and say he can make a bad record sound good. Straight *FACTS* . And they talk about Usher’s ownership of a song when he delivers his vocal in a way that no one else can. Same with Beyoncé.
So many jewels dropped, but what stands out is his focus and persistence. They keep laying out parts if the blueprint. This is the best music podcast out right now.
This interview was so dope it could’ve lasted for 72 hours and I would’ve watched all 72 hours of it….and B. Cox has that much content!!! He is one of the best and hardest working producers of all time!!!!
This podcast was much needed. Interviewing the newer artists is cool but I’m an 80s baby and a music head so to hear the come up of Brian Michael Cox, Johnta Austin etc and to even hear about writers and producers who I never heard of like J. Que is amazing. I’ll always love the artist but the person(s) who actually created the hits has always meant more to me: The Devante Swings, Teddy Riley’s, Babyfaces, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis’s Leon Sylvers, etc.
BCOX is so humble ! He will forever be blessed ......and J is right God blessed the humble resist the proud ! The more humble you are not fake humility but real humbleness God will always elevate you !!!
Thankful for this podcast, and for these Children of God right here. Bryan Michael Cox is a true God send, a brother that gave me a studio to write in and a education in making hits that people would kill to have. I am in awe of the good that God is.
I love the friendship between J and Tank. ❤
It's a beautiful thing for sure.
Awesomeness. Shout out to B. Cox Momma. You did your thang!
Sooo many legends in the R&B game. Salute to J and Tank for creating and cultivating the pod and platform..amazing #fortheculture #blackexcellence
It’s me hollering at the TV when Tank sang the “I ain’t saying no names” intro cause….tuh….🗣️BOY YOU BETTA SANG!!! 😮💨🔥🔥🔥🔥
From Johnta Austin to B Cox!!! R&B Legends!!
I was a credit reader back in the day and I would continuously see Bryan Michael Cox credited on some of my favorite songs!!! Bryan Michael Cox is a LEGEND!!!!
This podcast feels like how it did when I used to read the pamphlet inside a CD case. I would be so intrigued by the makings of an album-a song, especially a good one. This is that in realtime, I suppose, and it feels really good.
Why are there 2.3k people watching and only 536 likes? C’mon R&B money family; let’s support!!
41 year old from the UK, grew up on R&B and still ALWAYS get ready to music. I stay having a playlist ready for whatever the occasion might be. This is the best podcast kings, keep killing it.
Yesssss! So happy we got Johnta and B. Cox! Oceans baby!!! Iykyk.
Oceans 7! Iykyn
I haven’t look forward to a show as much as this since I was a kid watching one Saturday morning. This is the best podcast to me by dar
This by far is my favorite so far! I love the ones with the actual artists but I could truly visualize B. Cox's full career from beginning to end. Bravo 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾
Love y’all giving Ralph T his flowers.
B Cox is probably the first producer I remember hearing about as a kid! Literally part of the soundtrack to my childhood 🥹 And I’m glad they brought up the Confessions Interlude as it’s one of my fave R&B chord progressions that would later inspire me to learn the keys!
This one, the KC one, and the Warryn Campbell are in my top three simply for how detailed they were about the steps in their journey. So many gloss over those details or just don’t remember them. I learn so much every time. This podcast is a gift from God and I will forever be grateful.
I DEFINITELY have to get ready to music. My niece once asked me when I was in the shower with my music jammin', "Do you always have to listen to music in the shower?" I said, "Yeah, Girrrl!" 😂 It helps me get my mind and my mood right whether I woke up on the right side of the bed or not. It warms my voice up for a day full of talking to people. It gets my body moving. Same applies for when I'm getting ready to go somewhere. I just have to have music. I get it from my mom.
Me too I get mine from my parents
Do I? I have a whole set list in the shower lol. Some of my best singing.
Me too I've been doing it for as long as I can remember that need music to get ready !!
Me tooooo. I get it from my dad...RIP
Another legend !!! Amazing songwriter, producer. Wtote alot of my favorites! Cant wait to hear his Top 5!!!!
All of the podcasts are good, but this one will be one of those “ones” for me, as I’ve been a fan of his music and production for a while.
Making the Band - 2007 or 2008 was the everything for Millennials. I'm STILL listening to those records from Day 26 and Danity Kane TO THIS DAY! I had heard of Bryan, but seeing him work, coach, produce... fire! I can still sing the albums from top to bottom.
All facts! I too am still listenin' to those records. I feel bad that both groups didn't get the shine they deserved! Everyone was SANGIN!🎤🎤
I was introduced to B. Cox from Making The Band as well. Been in awe ever since.
B. Michael Cox is a BIG BIG legend in the R&B game. Definitely one of the 🐐 GOATS
The only way to do an R&B Money podcast right, is to pause and go listen to the song whenever it is mentioned. Great work, gentlemen 👊🏾
3 hours and change and I listened to it all...I love this Podcast. Sidenote: There's so much talent coming out of ATL , J and Tank will be in the A forever😂
We asked and yall delivered! Yes to B. COX!!!!❤❤❤
Now this is somebody who I remember growing up. Definitely love that he gave Chris Brown his flowers. We need him on soon.
Okay B.Cox has a CRAZY ear. I went to look up Gap Band V - I'm Ready and 2secs in...he's absolutely right! Definitely should have been a single! This joint goes!!! 🔥
1000%
This man is timeless!
B. Cox is one of my favorite producers. Thank you Tank and J for bringing such great artists on your show. The only thing I wish is that I had this knowledge when I was younger. I never knew just how I wanted to use my musical skills, but listening to Jazzy and Cox makes me feel like I should have been producing all along.
Continue producing
IDK what it is about that studio but this “A-Team” series of interviews are 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 ALL of the ATL artists/producers interviewed so far all seem to have this undeniable humility about them, mixed with joy and an anointing; not just a GIFT for music who arent shy to speak on their roots in the church! Tank & J these have truly blessed me!
-Sincerely, A church kid who ❤ God AND R&B! 😂
I discovered Brian Michael Cox when I was a teenager. My favorite albums back then had him all over it. The Trey Day album by Trey Songz & Day26's debut album. I kept hearing "another B Cox joint" throughout the albums & those songs were my favorite. every since then, I've been tuned in.
Good morning to all On this fine Saturday morning R&B Money…got thee B Cox in the building!!!! Oh what a joy this will be!!!!! Legendary!! ❤🎉❤🎉❤
Is anyone else having heart palpitations while listening to this legend recount his trajectory? What a true testament to what raw talent, grit, and determination can amass to! Favorite interview hands down! His musicality is gobsmacking!
Hold up these last few weeks yall been killing. Keri hilson, jazze pha, and another b cox joint 😱 feeding my soul
Bless Y'all for a 3 hr Pod today 🙏🏽
B. Michael Cox, LET'S GOOOOOO!!!
I love how my Saturdays don’t really start until I watch a new *R&B Money* episode. And Bryan Michael is the perfect guest.
Currently on a binge of R&B Money
Love this podcast, I call myself an R&B Money Honey... I'm Team Tank and J.Valentine... this podcast is musically informative, educational, fun, funny, respectfully mature...etc. I'm always sharing it with my friends ( especially those who love music like I do)... thanks Tank and J. Valentine ❤️
I can’t believe I just watched a 3 hour pod from start to finish …every second !..that’s craaaazy !!! What a dope episode man ..🎉🔥
I went to Howard with Raymond. I was sitting in one of the practice rooms when he was playing a jazz version of Autumn Leaves...I was to say beyond mesmerized.
Raymond is a bad dude, I've known him since he was a teenager, he's a players player
This is the man I’ve been waiting for since the very beginning. Him and JD don’t get credit for having beat-making vids or behind the scenes vids on UA-cam as early as about 14 years ago. I really wish I could have seen him the one time he was here in South Africa. I would have been singing his praises like mad 😄
"All of a sudden, my vision became so clear.
Everything I needed was right here,
Before me (before me)
So pressed to let you know
Just how you make me feel
Never had a feeling thats so real
Control me (and i'm ready, girl I'm ready)
Don't wanna play no games,
I want you exclusive,
Baby, we should just do this,
with the feeling's so strong"
If you know, you know
The Legendary Day26!!!
B. Cox, forever one of the R&B greats! One of my biggest musical inspirations. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this during the live premiere.
An icon of a man who is responsible for so many hit records that will never age
This man has been waiting to tell his story! What an informative and impressive contribution to the music industry. 🎶 ❤
The evolution of the Top 5 song has me rolling 😂why is Tank growling?!
B. Cox In A Word #Iconic #RnB #Money #Podcast
As a kid of the 90's, this was a such a treat. Thank you for what y'all do!
B Coxx is so humble and he even replied back to my comment and told me he produced one of my favorite Usher songs “Before I Met U” just amazing and the Day 26 album hes the goat fr
Did he say Eric Roberson? He needs to be on this. He is an incredible singer and song writer!
Yes! He mentioned him more than once! I was so happy about that too! I adore Erro!
Did you notice he mentioned Erro three times and crickets. What do Tank and J have against Eric?
Ok, so I'm not the only one who noticed that. Hopefully there's nothing to it. I would really love for them to have Erro on the podcast, he definitely deserves his flowers.
My smile be soo big when Tank be singing Ain't Saying no Names !! 😅
I have to watch this podcast every episode every Saturday. I get annoyed when people call me and disturbs my R&B Money flow. Keep bringing the heat fellas. I’ve learn so much.
Can’t believe I watched all 3 hours and I wanted more. He has to come back because there is more backstory with these songs, artists, artist development, labels, awards, balancing home life/the road/ family/ etc. I love these stories
Love, Love, Love this episode! I got chills listening him tell the story about Johnta Austin writing “Be Without You” I wish their episodes dropped back to back.
THIS IS THE EPISODE IVE BEEN WAITING ON!!!! BRIAN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MY FAVORITE 90S R&B SONGS/ALBUMS!!!
It’s just so dope watching these amazing people celebrate their major influences giving them their flowers 💐 and it’s all love & smiles
Tank need to wright musical skits for SNL
And I Don't Wanna is like one of my absolute favorite Jagged Edge songs....
Hell of all songs even!!!
This was legendary! Thank u for timless music mr cox. Thank u RnB money for keeping rnb alive giving us history insight vibes and education!
