a hi from HK, this bagged noodles is completely 100% HK style street food, affordable and teens-loved food. There is a big fridge storing like 15-20 toppings you can choose from. The octopus is totally a good thing, it's sweet, going really really great with the garlic. Can't believe this bagged noodle is introduced to foreigners on UA-cam!! Thanks Lucas!
@@jonathandjing1065 Not sure if Yuen long has this kind of shop. I know there is a few shops selling this in Mongkok, one in Mongkok center and one is at the G/F of 兆萬中心(CTMA Center). As the noodle is so low in price, I think it is commonly operate near school or teens hangout places🤣 u may checkout Yuen long 嘉城中心maybe?🤣
The cooked oil “sook yau” that Lucas mentions a few times actually is something that shouldn’t be missed. Def a big part of HK cuisine and always a part of my mom’s pantry. She would cook the oil with a few slices of garlic to flavour it and keep it in the pantry for any lo mein dishes. 🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰
If you cook it with garlic, and then store it, do you need to reheat it before serving on a cold dish like this? Just curious it the 'fresh heat' is a component or if just cooking it a little in the past will open the flavor?
I never knew this was a common thing! My mom always heated up oil with a couple cloves of garlic for every dish in the wok and the smell was a sign that dinner was almost ready
OMGGG I grew up with cold noodle in the snack shop and had it almost everyday after dropping off from the school bus!! 😭Its like 15 years ago but I still remember my favourite combination is pork neck, corn, and seaweed salad with 2 bags of rice noodle 'mai sin' instead of egg noodle🤣🤣 Lucas, thanks so much not only for this recipe, but also recalling this precious memories for someone outside HK like me. 💗 (just came across this vid and immediately liked and subscribed becz of Lucas😬 gayau!!)
Same! It's been 15 years for me too and this brings back memories of a really fun time in my life. My favourite was double egg noodles, extra spicy, with squid, and seaweed.
Woah! That’s really something I grew up with in HK! Good job, Lucas, to bring it to a wider audience worldwide!! I recall another way to mix it is to stick a long spoon for poking lemon pieces in an iced lemon tea and give it a really violent stir! The sauces and all ingredients will be brought to a perfect mix in this way.
I really love hearing him talk about food. The way he describes flavors and textures, the historical and cultural context and he gives it all an air of simplicity. Just great :)
I miss this “lo lo” so much. Born there and moved to US when I was 3. My cousins brought my family to this shopping center in Kwai fong in 2012 and til this day we crave and miss it so much. Don’t dare to go back to HK now so we make this at home for get togethers.. LEGIT SO GOOD!!! Wish they can open a store / kiosk here lol
This would be amazing in a jar or coffee cup. At my work recently someone dropped like a hundred of the nice expensive coffee cups all on the ground and we had to throw them out and not use them, so I took them home. This would be an awesome use for them since I don't drink coffee.. they're those nice dense paper foam ones similar to the nice noodle cups.. they will fit in the cup holder in my car... nice. I'm gonna try this!
Im crying. Since I left Hongkong 8 years ago I’ve been missing this thing so much but it’s really hard to find these days when I’m back in HK. And cuz of corona I haven’t been back for 2 years..omg I’m so gonna make this later🥺
I honestly agree with what the other comment says, that this is 100% hong kong style street food. Introducing pineapple bun or silk stocking milk tea won't tell you 10% of bagged noodle does in terms of the understanding of hong kong (teenager) lifestyle, really impressed! Btw my personal order: ask for extra garlic. After all who wants to date a girl who doesn't also have a mouthful of garlic breath after eating bagged noodles with you? Cheers Hong Kong :D
I love the tip about using cooked oil instead of raw oil, I've been using it for noodles/pasta for the last few weeks and I couldn't be happier! Almost no flavor, just non sticky noodles/pasta
有趣的以前店家都叫這台式凍撈/台式撈麵 然而當台灣的朋友到香港看到後卻說台灣根本就沒有這東西 因此我相信這的確是香港原創(? The funny fact is in HongKong those store who sale these noodles call them Taiwanese lowmein(cold noodle mix with sauce and garnish) But when I introduce this thing to all my Taiwanese friends they all said not certain things exist in Taiwan. I do believe this is Hong Kong original but they try to take the name from some oversea region to make it sounds more fancy
All of a sudden, I'm 13 and eating noodles out of a bag in a Mong KoK mall with my friends. This is bringing back a lot of memories...thanks for making this video!
I'm an Indian from Malaysia.....to those missing the cultural reference associated with the bag, please rest assured that my Indian self will never let a 'nice' bag go to the dustbin until I've properly washed it out, turned it inside out to dry and then found some use for it...
I remember a stall just outside of Kwun Tong MTR station, this brings back many memories of HK street food. Hopefully when quarantine ends, I’ll go back to visit my family and friends
Noodles in a plastic bag! Such a great idea for being able to prepare goodies for my co-workers, many of whom are Asian. I love to make them curry rice, sesame noodles, teriyaki, but now I have something that they can “take home” since our work don’t allow for everyone to eat at the same time, and some people’s “lunch time” is 4:30 PM, and they only want a small snack at that time. This idea of noodles in a bag is fantastic, and a wonderful way to create some nice “take home” goodies for hard-working folks so they don’t have to worry about dinner. Great idea.
This might sound like a strange request, but I would love more recipes with Vienna sausages. They’re so common in so many countries and I love to see how their incorporated into local dishes.
Awesome!!! Thank you cannot wait to try this.... Sooo many options... Omg why have I never thought of this... And in a zip lock bag.... Genius!! Thank you and I've shared this to heaps and heaps of friends and family. 5 x STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ P. S. and all in a little over 8mins... Awesome Luca 😊👍🏾hahahaha "Oh my Goodness..." Growing up in Hawaii, we'd buy a wax paper bag of chow fun (or any other kind of fried noodles) from the manapua man. This was usually after swimming at the rec center pool for a couple of hours. Could the post-swim snack from our childhood have originated in Hong Kong?
Wow! I grew up in HK during highschool/secondary school and I nearly forgot about those until I saw this video 😂 i love it especially with the sweet octopus
I had completely forgotten about thick noodles in plastic bags. Thin fried noodles in lined paper bags, yes. I do remember Singaporean drinks in plastic bags tho.
I’m from Hong Kong and currently lives in Canada so I made this and it’s pretty close to the real thing, except instead of using freshly copped garlic you should get the jarred minced garlic cause that’s what they use in HK. Fresh garlic is too spicy, lacking the sweetness of premade jarred ones.
I remember when I had these in HK I got the bigger, upside-down cone-shaped bags, much easier to stir. Anyways, silicone bags or lidded jars are home alternatives to plastics nowadays 😋 Thanks for the trip down memory lane and recipe!
