    It is refreshing to see a woodgas stove video where the stove is used as a gasifier. So many other videos show them being used as twig stoves.
    Well Done! Thanks for sharing with us.

      Yes, you don't get the secondary burn with the fuel piled up above the holes on the middle inner chamber so any fuel above those holes will produce smoke, which means about 3.5 inch sticks.

    I bought one a few months ago, the large version, which he demonstrated. Have seen other demonstrations, different fuel chamber packing methods, starting methods, etc. One thing that I noticed is that some people used cut and split wood, which didn't seem to catch that readily. The stove is usually packed so full that, I'm convinced, the air flow is hindered. As with most wood (and alcohol) stoves, a wider pot makes the most of a non-pressurized, broader flame pattern. I have a ti cup which nests nicely, but requires much more time, fuel, and fiddling to achieve a two cup boil than my Evernew 1.3 liter pot. I don't worry about soot. I just want to light it, put the pot on top, and get busy with other camp chores while the water comes to a boil. The smaller stove, from the videos that I have seen, requires more frequent tending because of its smaller burn chamber, and is not as stable because of its narrower base.

    I came across your video after I made my own "how to use'" the Toaks stove. It seems that we've both come to the same conclusion as to how to fill the Toaks. Yep, it took some goes to figure it out. Most overfill the stove above the gasifier holes and wonder why it smokes so much.
    The smaller Toaks stove fits into the Toaks 750ml pot.

    Cool video, thanks for posting.
    For 'bushcrafting' I've been using one of the cheap chinese stainless steel woodgas stoves for a while, it fits perfectly inside my stainless steel Zebra billycan, it's an indestructible pairing, but quite heavy.
    I've not seen that Coughlans fire gel stuff here in the UK, but I've had good success using a cottonwool pad smeared with Vasoline as a lightweight firelighter. I have seen people soak a cottonwool pad in wax to make a waterproof fire lighter.
    I also have the Toaks 1100ml bail handle pot and the 650ml cup for backpacking which i use with the Toaks alcohol stove, which is a nice lightweight setup, but I find I always have a certain amount of 'fuel anxiety' on longer trips.
    So based on your excellent review here, I've just ordered the small version of this stove to supplement my existing setup.
    I'll probably post up a review/field test video once it arrives.

    I always start the fire tiny.
    The chamber needs heating to work efficiently. So when the flame is developing you can scout around for a few more thumb sized dry pieces of wood. The best thing is to incorporate a pair of long handled pruning shears instead of an axe

      So much safer. I use a pair of 6 inch knipex cobra pliers and just crush and break them. These pliers have amazing leverage at the back of the jaws.

    the windscreen is upside down, you want the holes near the air intake. Also make some room around it so the air can get to it. It works best when the air flows into the lower intakes.

    i think this stove is nice and is good if you just want to boil water. I feel that Gen2 Titanium Folding Firebox Nano is better. It lighter has 2 opening to feed wood into continuously, it is incredibly stable and can have grilling platforms added and can easily handle a skillet. It is also built to hold an alcohol stove and a gas burner if either is desired.

    Useful tips for a real gem of a stove. This titanium wood stove has a superb design, especially, in regards to the internal chamber's ability to harness and utilize the wood gases efficiently. On Toak's website (accessory section), you can also pick up a titanium rack for the top, that is only $2.50. Toak's recommends that you buy two sets, for more functionality. And it's still a terrific deal at only $5, for a set of two. Supposedly, the rack can only be used on the larger model like the one you have, but it looks like it would be easy enough to modify it for the smaller unit. Thanks! for a well made video of what really should become in the future, like you said, "A Go To" wood gasifier titanium stove. Enjoy!

    I like what you did with the DIY pot stands, just thinking with how tall this stove is, maybe drilling another set of holes slightly lower would help even more consideringy our cup nests inside the stove so well. Having the heat forced up the side of the cup further could result in faster boil times. You'd be covering the burn hole more but it could be a good trade off to try.

    As a light weight ( 5 oz ) titanium stove it is a weight saver. Weight savings is always a good idea for a well made product. The only thing that stopped me from getting one is the height of it. I'm sorry you had trouble with your Bush Buddy. I have the ( 9 oz ) Solo Stove ( twin to the Bush Buddy ) and it has never failed me in all of the years of use. If they ( Toaks ) ever makes a lower version of their titanium stove I would have to try it.

    • @danielkutcher5704
      @danielkutcher5704 4 роки тому +1

      The height of this design is one reason why it works so well. The updraft is enhanced, pulling more air in from the bottom.

    The ABSOLUTE best, lightest and smallest carry size is TRAIL DESIGNS SIDEWINDER titanium sheet cone stove (or the larger TRI--TI. With the INFERNO inverted cone insert these stoves are TRUE GASSIFIER stoves like the TOAKS. But they both hold the dedicated pot lower into the cone to conserve heat and concentrate it on the pot bottom and sides.
    Got a favorite pot that needs one of these stoves? Trail Designs can usually make custom size for most backpacking pots.

    The rocket/gasifying feature should theoretically give more heat from the fuel due to more complete combustion, and less particulate air pollution. Would steady it against tipover with rocks, if possible.

    • @19ghost73
      @19ghost73 8 років тому

      Everett Vinzant: Obviously he has not, as your comment is in line with both physics and experience from well-seasoned outdoor people. Heat causes updraft, and this causes a constant supply of fresh air from below into the fire. However, (too) many guys find it difficult to do without burning themselves...and therefore for them (!) the "top burn start" is the easier way to start a fire. But that is not why a "top burn start" is "better"...it is just simpler for some.

      Try placing the tender/fire starter in the bottom and load the fuel wood on top. THEN lift the stove and lite it from the bottom. The 'ash pan' (this is the lower chamber of the 'fire box') is filled with holes and is perfect for putting the heat source (FLAME generated from whichever method) next to the tender.
      Indeed the upside down fire method is all the rage these days. Even the manufactures of these types of wood burning stoves try to entice would be buyers to buy their product by “selling” them on the idea that one may overcome basic fire building skills simply by purchasing their stove.
      This said, hear is simply a challenge. I dare you to try this method. I submit that it is important to understand the concept of convection and how it relates to fire building.
      The gentleman in this video demonstrates the idea very nicely.
      Keep in mind the 'PLATFORM' is built into the stove you are using.

    I appreciate the thoughtful review. Here is a general question about these types of stoves: are they allowed in parks that do not allow open fires? I'm unclear what constitutes 'open fire'? Thanks again.....Keefe

    • @T3Knical5urg3
      @T3Knical5urg3  8 років тому +2

      Keefe Borden It will vary each park.

    • @backpackingonline
      @backpackingonline 7 років тому +1

      Keefe Borden, no forest or park ranger would allow any open flame except directly on mineral soil with no flammable materials near to catch flame, spark, or coal not put "dead out" with sufficient water ready at the fire itself, an on/off stove is the usual requirement or a no fires ban.
      This is for USA, elsewhere likely have different laws and regulations.
      Here, it is a hefty fine and backcountry rangers for enforcement. The "fire bugs" are arrested.
      The problem of these videos showing wood fires on "forest duff" not mineral soil, and inflammable materials so nearby is that a fire can catch immediately or be in the "forest duff" and break out later on.
      The number of forest fires should be a "hint" because there is no lightning involved.
      If I seem oversensitive on this point, we have perfectly safe backpacking stoves banned with the on/off stove rule already because one fool very likely kicked over his stove in Colorado and, now, we have another forest fire just off the trail at an overnight "wild" camp as so many denizens of the UA-cam say.
      There isn't any backpacking stove with an automatic tip over on/off, nevertheless the new fire ban order rule persists. It won't be long, and we can have a "no fires" rule, except at established fire rings, or strictly "no fires" because UA-cam has so many videos depicting "campfires" so big tree branches could catch fire.
      I made photos of the steps involved of the actual way to put a gasifier wood stove fire "dead out" over at bplite.com forum on this thread www.bplite.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=4623 because so many participants were interested in the development of wood stoves for backpacking and we had just had that incident in Colorado.
      I like Toaks a lot, so I am commenting here.

      And I didn't even burn the forest down! Please describe a scenario where this small of a fire that is being attended to from light to the coal being cool where I start a forest fire? Any fire that could potentially bleed out of the stove would be so small my nalgene of water and a bit of tamping would be more than acceptable to deal with the fire. Even if it is knocked over and dumps the small amount of coals the same strategy would be effective because, again, I don't walk away from it.

      regardless of what you and your super human powers do or dont do...ANY time there is open flame you make sure that there area is clear of things that can and will burn. You disregarding that with your super human powers only confirms that you have no clue what you are doing in the woods and your lack of considerations for others that enjoy it the way that is is. have fun

    Yeah... So, Esbit is the way to go for the easiest, lightest weight way to boil a cup or so of water.
    I've jacked with all kinds of stoves, different fuels.
    Esbit. Period.
