Likewise, I was at a bar last night and a girl asked me if I was a "cop or a journalist" because I have a notebook sticking out of my jacket pocket....her guess was "journalist" but added "you can't be too careful."

its true about the precious hardcover ones, they can be intimidating and it tends to stop me from writing in it. so I went the other direction and got a ringbound A5 as a workout journal but the rings got in the way of writing, which wasnt cool. but it was very inviting to scribble in it and just write lists and whatever, zero hesitation to just get thoughts out on paper. there seems to be a balance between preciousness and usability that we must find for ourselves.
next I see a vid on youtube about the travelers notebook(TM). super neat leather on the outside, but on the inside you can put multiple notebooks, like a system that compartmentalizes your shit, so now you can have one notebook to mess around in and another for more precious and intentional thoughts. and the best thing is you can switch out individual notebooks once they are full and not loose the look and feel of your notebook, because its just a cover with several notebooks in it.
they have all kinds of custom inserts for these, total rabbit hole. would have gotten one but the non A5 form factor and all the shipping issues in these here times, made me steer clear of it because the accessories can be hard to come by. though you can get standard notebooks from amazon to put inside.
so I got a cheap leather A5 travelers notebook from amazon instead but the leather got scratched super easily and it smelled a bit funky, kinda unhealthy and I got freaked out by thinking about the chemicals that have been used on it. for now, I found a company called x17. their stuff is made in germany and its, like, the german take on the travelers notebook, man. it holds 4 notebooks and the way it does it, is just a bit better designed. I can fit an entire leuchtturm or moleskine in there plus 2 "skinny" non hardcover notebooks (I just got generic ones from amazon). their leather is all vegetable tanned and not crazy pricey.
now I can bring the precious leuchturm and my workout journal and a random notebook to fuck around in, in one neat package. didnt even get a leather x17 just went with their recycled leather called lefa, super cheap. got a bunch of accessories for it as well and payed only 26bucks for all of that. it arrived today actually. if I ended up loving it, I could upscale like crazy in terms of quality and design, their x47 line is literally the lamborghinis of notebook covers, nothing but leather and a metal, if you are into that. expensive, and you can only put their custom notebooks in. wild stuff if money is no concern.
what I will end up doing though, is to go and find a nice piece of leather myself and cut it down to the right size and then make 6 holes in the spine, feed a long elastic string through the holes and have my own homemade travelers notebook in which I can put up to 4 generic amazon notebooks. if you want to know more, watch stuffandthings video on his travellers notebook.
thank you for reading my blogpost.

Love the video!!! I have been using different small notebooks for years that I carry on me everyday. I have a few recommendations. My favourite small cashier notebook by moleskin is slightly smaller compared to the field notes and I find it is less noticeable in the pocket and easier to live with day to day. I would also say as someone working in the design field where I have used a variety of notebooks, make sure you find a notebook that you enjoy writing in, it might be a bit silly to think but all the little differences in notebooks make a difference in the use which again reaffirms my reason as to why I prefer my moleskin. Size, seam type and paper type all make a massive difference so if you find it difficult to use a notebook, try a different notebook until you find your preference. Hope this helps!

Hype to see the Maruman Mnemosyne featured - the whole series became my holy grail of notebooks (they even have a small form factor with a simple staple binding for pocket carry)
The plastic cover - doesn’t stain or tear.
The spiral binding never breaks and lays flat.
And the pages tear our really cleanly.
It’s the only stationary I use anymore
Loved the content since I first saw your review of the Bellroy pencil case (which I still carry!) cheers 💫

Chase, thanks for the review. I have been addicted to Zequenz brand soft bound notebooks since my first purchase years ago. Top quality with many sizes and page types. They lay flat when opened. My current favorite is the "Colors" notebook series with dot grid pages. Thick enough paper for no "ghosting".

Regarding the comparison between dog grid and grid. Have you noticed the size difference in the grid? I also found one book that had smaller dot grid. Finding the right size lines can be important. For me grid is just right. To write in the smaller dot grid book, I need to switch out my pen to a smaller nib and change my writing a little bit smaller for it to work. So don't sleep on the type of markings is highly individual depending on handwriting.

At university when friends missed a lecturer and borrowed my notes (on loose leaf paper 9x7 inches) they would copy them into their notes (A4 loose leaf) and would always complain that it took two sides of A4 for one of my 9x7" sides. I used 0.1mm and 0.25mm Rotring technical drawing pens for writing and diagrams.
I now need a pocket microscope to read the notes.

Have you tried Levenger circa or any of it's disc-bound modular clones? You wanna talk about a relationship. Building your own notebook. Picking whatever size YOU want, paper YOU want, covers YOU want, being able to add whatever other documents, printed or from other notebooks or whatever that you want? Definitely not entry-level but in the end it beats any single notebook for me with the exception of the tiny one I carry in my pocket at all times to catch the little things.

Loishterm is how the German is pronounced. I swear by the index and page numbers, as I journal my ideas on projects over time, and can accrue all the thoughts’ locations. It’s how I build a project in ideation. I don’t have any transparent pages however. Perhaps you have the soft cover? My hardcover Leuchtterm 249 pages are opaque. I use waterman and Lamy ink in fountain pens. I never use gel or rolling ball, let alone ballpoint. I find it most tactile which I agree is a strength. Plus lays totally flat and has TWO ribbon markers, one I use for the index.

The Rhodia Webnotebook is fantastic. I’ve used most of the books you talk about and it’s my favorite for general use.
In my profession, I have a requirement that note pages be removed occasionally. I end up using spiral notebooks for work and I can’t stand them. The pages shift around, they are awkward to transport, and the paper is never of any quality. This is a space in this market that someone could innovate.

Digital notes have their place, they are searchable on any device. But a written notebook is invaluable just to brain dump your ideas in the first place. The best way to get started, is just to write the day and date at the top of your page, and write your tasks for the day… and top up through the day with things that pop into your head.

The best advice in this video is to stop worrying about what notebook to use and just find something worth writing. I write my 'morning pages' every morning in a 99-cent spiral notebook from Wally World. Agonizing over the particular notebook is what used to be called being "method oriented." That is, focusing on the methods rather than the true objective.
