How to SAFELY Use 12V Accessories on the LiveWire

- The small 12v Lithium Battery on the LiveWire isn't strong enough to run heated gear for a sustained amount of time, luckily riders can tap into the 12v converter off the main RESS to power their heated gear and other electronics without killing the motorcycle. @@AdventuresonZero Oh no, I meant on the bike side. For 12 V accessories on other bikes Harley sells a few of them, it's as easy as to add a washer style connector on the battery terminals.
@@IIARROWS oh yeah, well for whatever reason they didn’t want or think people would use accessories on this bike, except for the siren alarm which is easy to install

Hi Ben. Ok, quick question. The live Wire is fully charged; you're riding in "normal conditions". Percentage wise, how much additional battery drain is caused by running the heating & phone?
Very little. I’d have to sit down and do some napkin math, but maybe a mile or two of range if I ride for a while
I was curious as well, so I did the math using the power draw figures from Revzilla's Hotwired gear (easiest to find quick) - full set (jacket, pants, gloves, but not soles) is 170 watts, plus a phone - if it's quick charging, say 25-30w. Say 200w for all of that. 1% of the (usable amount of the) RESS is 136w. So, if you ran all of that at max for 3 hours straight, you'd use about 4.5% of the Livewire's battery. If you're riding 3 hours, you've *probably* got to charge it at least once, so you'd probably only use 2% or so per charge, for like 2-4 miles of range loss per charge.

What is the Livewire Inlet Plug Part Number 69202480 used for? It's this loose rubber thing under the seat. Just got my LiveWire I have a million questions.
So that was supposed to be an anti-tamper device for the included EVSE. Meant to prevent someone from unplugging your bike and stealing your cord, but it doesn’t work 😆

Okay I have another question. Is there a way to check the State of Health (SOH) of the battery? I just watched a video of a Hyundai Ionic after 5 years and 100,000 kms the owner hooked up an OBD2 connector and used an app on his phone to view the batteries health. Spoiler Alert the car had 100% battery health, no degradation at all. So is there an OBD2 port or another way to view the SOH of the LiveWire? This could be very useful for someone looking to buy a used bike. Thanks Ben.
As far as I’m aware there isn’t. I actually doing some research for an upcoming video on purchasing used electric motorcycles, and have reached out to the big makers for their input on determining/assessing battery health. Unfortunately there is no way to directly check right now. Some older Zero models, you can check the voltage of the entire pack, but that got firmware’d out. Check out the channel Hans Hacks, he owns an Energica and has hooked up some ODB type devices to his bike to report info, but I’m not sure what all it entails or if it’s what you’re looking for. Hope that answers it for you.

The one in this video is from Zero, however it's been discontinued. I now use a FLXRS windshield that's been slightly modified to fit my LW1 and S2 Del Mar. If you go to my community tab, scroll down to April/May and you'll see which one I got. It's only available outside the US, not sure where you're at.
Hi Ben, hope you are doing well. We've exchanged a few messages a while back. I've owned a Livewire One in Paris since September 2023. Ever since I purchased it, I've had countless technical issues I haven't found it to be nearly as good as the demo model. My bike has been in the workshop after an EVSE for 7 weeks now. They've lent me the demo model, which I think handles and feels a million times better! I'm trying to sort out these issues but am being sent back and forth between the Livewire representative and Harley. I've asked them to swap my bike for the demo model, which they aren"t willing to do. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I'm debating whether to keep the bike. I love the demo model and when mine works well, it's an incredible machine. I do miss wind protection on faster roads. Would you mind reminding me the name of your windshield? How easy is it to fit and does it give you real wind protection above 60mph?
Oof, that's frustrating! Hopefully they get it sorted out for you. I wouldn't recommend this screen anymore, and I don't think it's manufactured now. It was a pain to keep in place, now I used some very custom stuff from modified HD parts.

Very true, I didn’t want to wait for the molex to come in 😆 HD is easy to use. I guess one could trim off and cap the excess if they wanted to
I followed your instructions exactly and it works perfectly! It is a godsend to be able to use my electric jacket the on the LiveWire in the wintertime. Not having high-output 12 volts DC has been one of my biggest gripes. It's really cool that it turns on-and-off with the ignition so you don't accidentally kill the battery.

I’m new to your channel but you have made me interested in riding my Livewire again. I asked my dealer and my white glove guy when I first got my bike about this and was completely discouraged by them. I sent them your video asking if they have changed their minds to see if they would do this install for me now.
I’m sure HD corporate discouraged the idea as well, and that likely trickled to techs. It’s a very easy addition and it’s all HD components. Just don’t exceed 10 amps

Ben, nice video. Thanks. I am a bit confused about hooking up the 69201149 SAE to USB adaptor. The docs from Harley don't show any polarities which is a glaring omission and make me hesitant to just assume what is correct or not. In your video, unless I missed it, you don't go into anything about adding an SAE connector to the Harley wiring harness for the USB adaptor. So, I am looking for one that is fused on Amazon. On this adaptor, I assume that the male side (unprotected) is the +ve terminal because this would mean the +ve terminal from the battery or the Harley connection harness is protected from inadvertent shorting against something. Is this correct? I can plug it in and see but I fear I might damage the SAE to USB adaptor if I connect the polarities backwards.
Hey Bill. I'm using all Harley cabling harnesses, so the polarity matches out of the box. I rewired a SAE connector from a local auto store and kept the red wire on the positive side. Hooked up my sat nav and it powered up fine.
@@AdventuresonZero Ben, the confusing thing is that Amazon has the identical SAE connector with the ring terminals for both the output of the battery where the positive is protected or you are coming from a solar panel or charger and tending the battery, then that cable has the positive unprotected. One needs to be careful about this. I think I read somewhere that this SAE connector should never be used on motorcycles.

Thanks for this video and the information, so helpful. So does this wiring method mean you are powering your heated gear or accessories from the main battery (after the 12v convertor) rather than the tiny 12v battery? I am running a loud (Denali Soundbomb) horn, but I am running it off the 12v battery. I wonder if this may be causing the "12v Battery Weak" warning that I am currently getting. Would you recommend wiring up my horn in the same way as you've wired your heated gear in this example?
Glad you found it helpful! Yes, you are powering the gear from the RESS and not the 12v battery. Harley-Davidson says to never run off the 12v battery, as it gets trickle charged by the main pack. I would recommend you wire the horn using the method here, as it doesn't draw from the 12v battery - just make sure that the horn does not draw more than 10 amps.
@@AdventuresonZero thank you! Yeah, I see on the Denali website that the horn is a 20amp power draw..... time to start shopping for a different horn I guess, and that would further explain why the horn is probably killing the 12v battery in it's current wiring setup.

Yes it still charges the 12v battery. Essentially adding a splitter from the 12v converter, which is why you don’t want to exceed 10amps, leaves enough to trickle charge the 12v battery
@@AdventuresonZero do you ever get a "12 Battery Weak" warning? I just picked up a used 2020 Livewire and I only rode it once so far (and it's showing a 12v battery weak warning). Can I use a 12v lithium ion battery tender? Or should I consider replacing the 12v battery?
@@daveallen1973 No I've never seen that warning on either of my bikes. It sounds like that horn continuously draws power, especially if it's hooked up to the 12v battery, which HD recommends against. You can use a battery tender, just make sure it's one that can handle lithium ion. Harley-Davidson sells an inexpensive 1amp and 5 amp tenders. I would recommend using the method in this video, as it doesn't draw from the 12v battery and can only draw when the bike is powered on.
How do you connect the USB SAE 2 pin connector?

@@Jimmy-01890 I believe the USB-C is around 3 amps?? You can pull up to 10amps from the converter
@@AdventuresonZero The HD SAE to USB connector only output 1 amp. If the bike’s USB C can output 3 amp, that’s more than enough to charge an iPad.
