Why didn't you mention forking repositories and licensing? Don't be afraid to steal code because that's how we all learned.

A license will tell you how you may use or distribute code in a repository. Forking repositories is the git way of copying a repository, usually done because you want to contribute to it.
I can't imagine copying someone elses work any other way.
