Swapping Grills and Headlight Type on 1996 Ford Econoline van | Black and White look

  • I'm right down the street from a pull and pay Junkyard and I was just looking at the new Ford Econoline vans they had just got in. I came across one with a more modern black grill with sealed headlights. I grabbed it and swapped it with my old falling apart grill. I also wanted to have the sealed headlight design so I swapped those as well and will be installing led headlights soon. Learn from my mistake and don't get another headlight and grill holder bracket because they are interchangeable between the different headlight designs. I could have saved a bit of money if I knew for sure what to get. hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    I had those LED replacements on my old van, and they make such an insane difference. I could hardly see at night, and I'd constantly be out-shined by cars behind me. With the LED ones, It lit up the entire road.

    Thanks very much. The top of my 93 grill broke off just like that. I've seen others that have as well. Funny how that little strip of chrome looking plastic brakes off. Just ordered a new grill, 50 bucks. Cheers!

    hey man awesome job. about to do the same thing to my econoline so i can buy similar headlights. sick of the cloudy ones like you used to have. one question my local junkyard have a bunch of them so instead of removing whole piece i learned from you lol everything as far as the clips seem straight forward, just squeeze and pull tabs off but i was wondering about the spring and the little white plastic slides how do you take those off, let me know if you remember trying to save time by not having to pull whole thing off to remove just those pieces. thanks.

      hey thanks! makes sense, I can't remember exactly, I think they might unclip and slide off, it's pretty apparent when you look closely at them

    Thank you for this! It’s exactly what I want to do to our new camper van rig! Just need to find a junk yard with the whole set up. Those adjustment screws alone are $20 a pop!

      no problem! I loved how they turned out. yeah that are pricy! I just got some more at the junk yard the other day just in case, they don't even charge for bolts and small hardware at my junk yard, just the 2 dollar entrance fee

    That's awesome. Making it look much newer with this upgrade. I'm looking forward to doing a led upgrade to my 2015 Jeep Wrangler as the stock lights suck. It'll be great having that visibility increase.

      Thanks! For sure, some people dont like it but I love it. That will be cool, they sell so many custom upgrades for those wranglers. Indeed it will, I am doing a before and after test in the led install vid

      @@4WheelKid that's great to have a before and after, proof is the best. Jeep Wrangler's are like AR-15s and Glocks with more accessories then money can buy.

    Good Job ! Those headlight adjuster screws are Stupid expensive new. Always a decent supply at junkyards. I keep Clean spares. FWIW, I spent a whole weekend opening up the ‘honeycomb’ holes on my ‘03 grille, not knowing that they actually made them OPEN in subsequent years. I found an ‘06 … would’ve saved two days and a few cuts from Xacto.
    Also, re: the “dual logos”, since you van is white, just pick up a composite hood at jy without the logo. That’s what I did … $30.

      @4WheelKid  2 роки тому

      thanks! yes they are and no aftermarket versions. I love the junk yard. mine is like across the street from where I live almost and they always have a lot of these vans. yeah I thought about doing that but most had the ford emblem on the hood, even the one I got this grill off of. I just fiber glassed it. i'm painting the entire van with raptor liner white anyways. stripping off all the old white paint and down to bare metal. raptor anticorrosive epoxy primer in the middle. roof and front end and doors are all done, it's looking so good

    Hello. New sub with a question. I have a 1996 E350 short wheel base I play with and I noticed you mentioned you blocked off the rear a/c. I do my own work mostly but not on the a/c. My local shop says they don’t know how to do it on this model although they typically are creative with this type of work. I may get a 2nd opinion but I was wondering basically how you did it.

    • @4WheelKid

      There are hoods like that, I actually removed the hood emblem and fiberglassed the indent, before I raptor lined my van 🚐 turned out great, yeah the 2 emblems looks silly

    Put a 4WheelKid sticker or even a TDubskid sticker on one of the Ford emblems

      Just going to fiberglass the indent since the hood is already fiberglass

    I tried using a newer grill like that but it doesn't let the same amount of air in. The engine ran much warmer in the summer and I had to put the old style back in.

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  2 роки тому

      Could also be something up with your cooling system. And the slight grill change is just showing it, my condenser is beat to crap with rock and bug hits, which would block air flow for sure, however my problem was over cooling in the winter. Im doing a complete cooling system overhaul anyways

      @4WheelKid if i knew how id send ya pictures of my econoline, 96 with the 7.3 diesel. No 4x4 tho. I raptored it, and as far as the two ford logos... i have zero logos haha, i popped the one off the hood, fiberglassed and filled the depression, looks much better i think. Im onto my interior now, not doin any van life bullshit, just trying to restore and clean it up.

      it was worth it in my opinion. some people go the other way though haha. just remember you the backing plates are the same, you just need to grab the hardware and headlight cups out of the junk yard, easy way to save some money

  • @thefoos8086

    Just a fair warning, I just did the opposite. Went to the composite headlights. Why? Because there is zero support in the market for the adjustment hardware for the sealed beams.
    For you guys outside the rust belt, this might not be an issue. You can hit a yard and grab spares. For me in the rust belt, they are all garbage at this point...

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  2 роки тому

      Yeah thats good advice, no one makes the adjusters aftermarket. They were like 20 each from ford. I was glad i found some at the junk yard.

      That’s the exact problem I’m running into. The adjustment housing on my van is rusted out and I’m struggling to find any sort of usable replacement.
