I like wanna surf so bad, usually my excitement holds back my fear, but when im floating out there oh the board. I just imagined That 12foot tiger next to me or investigating me! Then I'm overwhelmed.
I want to buy a surf board but the fear of sharks are keeping me out of the water smh .

The more you get out and do it, the more that fear will subside. It’s just those first few long sessions that you have to get through!

Coming from a new surfer, if you are out and trying to learn and progress you often times don’t even think of them! You’re just focused on the next wave! Learn up on sharks and encounters and you’ll beat the fear in no time.
Believe me, there is nothing more relaxing than surfing! Very good for the physical and mental health!
Before becoming a scuba diver I was afraid of sharks, but after swimming with them and seeing them in their natural habitat, I learned a lot and now understand they are peaceful, calm, amazing animals.
That's what I'm looking forward too the most with scuba, awaiting first training dive end of September. NAUI open water and nitrox
I feel like shark week does a diservice to our preception. Half of the shows are attack stories.

I wish you broke the US down to the state level. I'm in Florida, we have a huge portion of those 41 bites. A buddy of mine got bit a few years ago. He was back on a surf board as soon as he could and from what I remember, I believe he said his biggest fear was people hearing about his bite and being scared away from the ocean.

wonder how many of those provoked attacks involve a Floridian harassing a sleeping nurse shark, grabbing the tail and attempting to go on a joyride. those of u that are not from Florida would think im joking. but sadly im not.
@@attiumeyami417 from what I remember reading, almost all of the bites are mistaken identity in shallow water. My guess is most don't even know there's a shart there until it but them.
@@D.H.CE_FL yes they usually are by mistake. sharks do use their teeth sometimes to take a gander at what you are (food or not). usually they will bump into you and just use their skin but they may use their teeth. however its not like they don't circle or charge. I've had a couple cases where the water was super clear (yes we were spearfishing in blue water) and had one actually bite my free diving fin.
what is greatly and grossly misrepresented in movies is the effect that blood has on sharks and what actually triggers them. I have shot many fish in sharky waters. while the blood may interest a bite it dosent seem to drive them wild like its portrade in the movies. what actually drives the m wild is the struggle of a fish. I would be willing to say they pick up heavily on the electromagnetic signals a fish sends off while in distress and that is what actually triggers aggressive behavior.
In 300+ dives in south Florida, the "shark attack capital of the world", I've only ever seen an occasional nurse shark.
Now my friends that spearfish, both scuba and free-diving, have seen sharks and often bull sharks. None have been attacked. They either give them the fish, poke them off or send their catch up on a lift-bag. If I'm not mistaking, an attack while spearfishing is considered "provoked".
When people learn that I scuba dive I'm often asked if I'm afraid of sharks, to which I reply: "No, I'm afraid of drunk boaters"

I just went out during mini season. felt like the purge. just absolute mayhem. I was barely able to keep my eyes in the water cause I was consistently looking up at the next drunk a**hole passing by at 30+ in an are where u had 20 dive flags. its like bro u need to be revoked of ur license to operate any vehicle. not to mention the idiot that thinks its a good idea to attempt to shoot a kingfish in the area where everyone is lobstering. no joke I saw shaft fly 8 feet infront of me.

To add to your list of the most dangerous sharks I'd include the Oceanic White Tip even more so than the Great White, because of the fact that when aircraft or plane wrecks happen the Oceanic White Tip has proven to be an opportunistic eater. Great White's are more likely to be found where there are large congregations of seals and sea lions, so off the California coast, and off Cape Cod in Massachusetts, though earlier this year there was an 18 ft Great White spotted of my home state of Maryland's Atlantic coast. Fortunately the sharks I'll be diving with in a few years are known to be docile and quite shy, black tip reef sharks.
Indeed... the oceanic white tip maybe is the most dangerous of all! They can be very curious, territorial and agressive too! In the Red sea there have been some incidents with the oceanics white tip. But given the number of dives that happen every year can say it's safe to dive behaving appropriately.

I have never scuba dived in my life. But i really want to experience diving with sharks. I think it would be an experience of a lifetime.
I would never do it alone without proper guidance though.

I’ve never been afraid of sharks but I’ve always had a healthy respect for them. Always been in awe of them when I’ve seen them, sharks have such a majestic beauty to them. Great video😊👍

I went on a trip to North Carolina in July and saw plenty of sand tiger sharks. Wasn't afraid of them at all and had a great time. Shark attacks are very rare.

Are sharks way more dangerous in water where you can only see 4ft? They seem to be way more aggressive where I am. My personal belief is people aren't getting bit because no one is crazy enough to dive here

Hi Katt , I just want to say what a great video that was. At 42 I’m ashamed to say that I’m only just getting into scuba-diving and currently about to take my open water course. I’ve always been sceptical of the sea/ocean because of what lies beneath, however, more, so now than ever, I want to explore that very world and protect the ocean, coral, and all its inhabitants.
Your video was so informative, and has laid to rest many fears that I’ve had regarding sharks

My first shark encounter was when i stumbled in between about 15-20 black tips in Thailand while snorkeling. It was a amazing experiance.
Perfect timing. Was just saying today that I look forward to diving Elphinstone and seeing longimanus, but I'm also a bit anxious about it.

I'm not afraid of them because I know that like any wild animal, if you respect them and give them their distance, they will respect you. I'm in college to become a marine biologist and I want to work with them and other animals to help conservation efforts :)
Nothing better than being in the water with them. But completely agree with you always respect them and keep distance. Good luck with your studies.
When I get a bit older I want to do spear fishing and I saw a video with a shark so I watched this video and it's probably going to help me if I ever do spear fishing

Same here, I used to be petrified of open water. But I went scuba diving one time and I love swimming in the ocean, but for some reason I'm still skeptical about the beach.

I don't know if you'll see this comment, but I have a question.
I saw that you spent some time in Mohéli, my family is from there (I grew up in France though). I've recently inherited some seaside land not too far from Nioumachoua (the village near Laka Lodge), and I was thinking of picking up diving once I go back there, since I've heard great things about the marine park.
Did you see any sharks when diving there? I'm not too keen about them if I'm being honest
yes want to hear more about spear fishing I scuba not free dive does the bubbles make it harder to spear fish? what else could I use like Hawaiian sling?
It might be a good idea to be respectful of a shark's potential, but the only time I bumped into one (literally) was while diving off Townsville, swimming around a coral bommie. And boom! I was face to face with a lovely big eyed reef shark that took one look at me and skidaddled. It wasn't scary at all. Well, not for me. But I'm still respectful and avoid murky water.
I see this is an old video but I am SO thankful for it! We saw a bull shark on my 6th EVER dive and I was just blown away how excited others got swimming toward it as I stayed plenty far away. 🤣 My other bigger fear (that I’ll be facing for AOW training in a couple months) is night diving. I’d love your comforting thoughts on this idea as well!
I have a couple videos about the advanced course and even one about night diving, definitely check them out! I 100% it can be very daunting. I still get a little freaked out before every night dive

As someone who regularly spearfishes and encounters sharks I will say that as long as ur not doing anything stupid such as but not limited to....... swimming in murkey water, attempting to touch the shark for some dumb instagram selfie, or acting like b**ch whenever one showes a remote amount of curiosity in u......... then u will most likely be ok. They genuinely don't like to be around us. at most they will get curious, come take a look and leave.
If ur just a scuba diver, avoid murkey water, and don't swim away like prey if one shows up (u simply can't out swim it) look it straight in the eyes and stand ur ground. no need to get into a battle stance. just gotta look the fish straight in the eye the whole time. in nature eye contact means ur not prey. thats all u gotta do.
if ur a spearo on the other hand .u got a few different rules u gotta play with. as a spero you will be putting blood in the water but worse than blood are the electromagnetic waves emmitted by the stressed fish trying to escape. I have seen bulls swim right past my dead bleeding fish and the vibe I get from them is "Idk if its worth it cause Idk what that weird animal (human) will do to me if I try to take that fish" however when the fish is swimming around stressed with a shaft in its body those stress signals trigger the primal instincts of these animals.
so first rule is to put a Knife in the brain of ur fish as quickly as possible this will not only minimize suffering but it will also lessen the attention it can draw from nearby predators by a longs hot.
now that you brained the fish u got 3 other choices
1) remove the fish from the water- this involves quickly getting the fish on ur boat and out of the water. if your swimming from shore then the remedy is to tie a cooler on to your dive flag and place any fish that fits inside that cooler as quick as possible. this will keep the scent out of the water and is by far the best option of all 3 I will give. if for some reason this isn't possible we will go to the next 2 options
2) option 2 is to keep the fish close to you. sharks have a healthy fear of humans and will usually keep their distance . with the exception of the white shark and large tigers and bulls mabey. keep the fish close to you and maintain eye contact with the shark until it leaves and dosent come back for at least 8 min. sometimes they will enter that grey area where they are close enough to see u but u can't see them. thats why you use the 8 min rule. sharks don't circle around for 8 min unless there is a large carcass (such as a whale) in the water. show it ur a predator as well and it will likely keep its distance. for those of u who can't muster the courage to do this u have but one other option.
3) attach the dead fish to a metal stringer and the stringer to your dive flag. maintain a good distance from your dive flag. and when the tax collector shows up simply pay ur dues.
to those of u that can't seem to fathom doing either of the 3, ur better off finding another sport.
also f**k u if ur Australian and ur main fear is jaws. u got worse sh*t on that prehistoric island to worry about than sharks. u got saltwater crocs that genuinely enjoy eating humans, invisible box jelly fish with some of the deadliest venom on the planet, spiders the size of infants, and ur average kangaroo can punch as hard as mike Tyson and they have claws. so yeah stfu
It is both, funny and strange, when showing videos of my first Scuba-holidays, how horrified my friends were to see me in their vicinity. How much would I have loved to have them closer to me, so afraid they were to stay away ! Friendly white tip reef sharks, smaller than 2m ;-)
Just shows how spending time underwater really changes your perception! I cannot beleive so many people have never swam with sharks. I love to get to dive with them every weekend
Great video! But i got a question.Since sharks are ambush predators, how does one deal with a safety stop? I mean, to hang somewhere above sharks is probably raising the chances to be attacked?
I never used to be conscious of the occean, but ad I got older my fear as increased. I am looking at going Hugarda, egypt. Do sharks 🦈 come into shallow Warters, only I really want to do some snorkeling, so I would be swimming in 10foot depth. Thanks

Sharks are intimidating but they are a fish at the end of the day and bound by the rules of nature. respect them and they will most likely respect you.

Okay, I know we are devastating the ocean industrially, but still that number seems astronomically high. Did you mean per year? I have trouble thinking there there would even be enough sharks in the world to allow such insane kill count. I'd be thankful if you cleared this up because I'm a bit confused now.

I'm new to scuba and I was surprised when instructors started telling me sharks are very friendly creatures, then I started watching videos about it and kept learning more and more that this is actually the case and that my scuba instructor was not a crazy adrenaline junky with a shark tattoo. Seeing the specific statistic that only 3% of the actual shark attacks happen to scuba divers was the most valuable piece of information, thank you!
I was terrified of sharks 😨 until I watched this video 🔱 so glad I did. ⚓ makes me want to be a mermaid even more now 👧🏊🌊💧🐚🐠🐟🐳🐋
In the percentages slide, scuba was the lowest. Isn't scuba also the lowest in participation? It's difficult to say scuba is safer just from those numbers. More spear fishing videos would be interesting to me. Best wishes and good luck growing your channel.
I will definitely be doing research for numbers vs chances. I think scuba diving is actually more common that spearfishing in many places.
My personal fear for sharks is a big deal as well, In a time period of maximum 3 months i will face it.
Not becourse i desire to , But becourse im so afraid of them.
If i have the courage to swim alongside sharks , i will have a great drivingforce to tackle fear & obstacles in my daily life later on.
Many people are afraid, and it is quite normal to be. They are apex predators after all. But the more you can learn about them, the better you can understand them!
Do I have a fear of sharks, ummm yeah, 7 rows of razor sharp teeth should make a person fearful, BUT, it's like with us old folks, we got our butts torn up, we are still scared of our parents, BUT, it's a healthy amount of fear. When I was in the Marine Corps, the squids told us a way to calm our nerves when the skipper would drop anchor and declare swim time, I learned real quick between the difference of dorsal fins between a shark and a dolphin......LOL and you're swimming in 1000 feet deep of water(you never seen a white boy climb a rope ladder so fast) BUT, Having lived in Charleston South Carolina all my life, I didn't swim in pools, I swam at folly beach, home of tiger sharks and black tips, now granted tigers are vicious pricks, they really are, because a lot of folks don't realize that when they hunt, they hunt in packs, like land tigers, they are also very territorial, BUT, some of the "attacks" were towards surfers. I would rather go 8 rounds with a great white than a tiger, so, yes, don't swim at dawn or dusk, it's sharks feeding time. when I go to the beach, I watch for dolphins swimming around the pier, when I see them, I swim like a mad man, now I will say dolphins are assholes too, but, it's a matter of safety, dolphins in the water, no sharks. since getting certified O.W. am I afraid of sharks, yes, but it's a respectful fear, I'm in their territory and I stay out of their way, and like Katt said, get vertical, they think you're a killer whale or something...LOL
One thing that I learned from a Navy diver friend of mine( Which is ecstatic that I got my c-card now), told me, don't wear bright colors, this is why the majority of wet suits are black or a dark color, sharks think your a fish if you're wearing bright colors, sharks don't have the best eye sight, but they can tell bright from dark, like Katt was saying about the electromagnetic senses of sharks, bright colors send waves that sharks pick up, but if you're wearing a black wet suit, you become a hole in the water, think of it as stealth technology, if a shark comes up to you, it's because the senses sharks have can't tell if your a cave, or something else, because your magnetic field is being distorted. when he told me that, it made me feel a bit better about diving in the ocean, my buddy and I are planning a dive trip in october just off the coast of Isle of palms. he also knows some dive instructors and talked to one because I want to get certified for FFM....... and his buddy is willing to do one-on-one. Wish me luck!

Since I moved to Italy from Wa state I have been swimmming in the ocean more (rasied in Hawaii). I love the water and the ocean but there is always the stupid fear of sharks. I am a good swimmer and lately I have been wanting to swim out further in the open water but I don't know how to turn off that fear. Help?

Do I have fears of shark when I get in the water? You bet, I do but I also know the statistic and strategies of how to deal with an aggressive shark. So, like anything in life, it's all about risk management. In reality the chances of choking on a glass of water in the morning is higher than getting bitten by a shark while scuba diving!
Also, when you see a shark (aggressive or otherwise), please keep both your hands to yourself otherwise the shark might think your fingers are food and come forward for a little nibble! (I saw in the video that one of the divers had his/hers hand in front of them - that's not wise!)

No great whites! Lots of tiger sharks, bull sharks, white tip reef sharks, nurse sharks, leopard sharks. :)
Sharks are beautiful and fascinating, but so are lions and tigers... it's stupid to think of them as friendly or not dangerous. These animals can maim you for life out of curiosity.
This is the first time I’m hearing of australias shark nets. I’m pretty sure the reefs out there are doing bad, something like shark nets just adds to that issue, allowing predatory fish to outnumber fish responsible for reef ecosystems without a limit to their numbers.
I don't know if I'm afraid of sharks, but I'm totally not like: "lets got swimming with sharks." I guess I 'm somewhere between. But to be honest, more at afraid of sharks, so 60% : 40%

But I guess I would trust you, so if you would decide to went diving with me, with some sharks, I guess I would do, because I guess because you keep being calm, it would help me to stay calm too.

My biggest fear in a diveshop have always been to not be able to hold my self back from knocking the lights out of a drunk douchy surfer.
I'm scared to death of sharks. I went snorkeling in Maldives and saw a huge reef shark and I was afraid to go back again but I did and saw it again and it was just swimming not bothering me but I was afraid. Saw some nurse sharks and a hammerhead while diving and they don't scare me but the hammerhead did.
Katt, You said only about 4 people die a year(On average). Its like when I ride my Motorcycle. More people die in those accidents. But I still ride. You just need to know what you doing. And watch your surroundings. I guess the real question is, How many Life long injuries? I know why they don't like Scuba Divers. They don't want to be weighted down.

I think I have fear of sharks because of how they look and they come at full speed and they bite and I am really scared to swim alone even if it’s a swimming pool because of sharks. Ik I’m dumb thinking there are sharks in swimming pool 😭
This is actually a common yet weird fear. I have it too. In fact i'm more scared swimming by myself in a pool (because of my imaginary pool shark) than I am of swimming by myself in the ocean. Definitely an irrational fear. Look into CBT therapy to help you conquer it!
Most of them are tiger sharks bc tiger sharks are aggressive other sharks are incidents or annoyed sharks
People say they will never swim in the ocean but get on the freeway everyday.......makes no sense whatsoever

man the reason im afraid of sharks is simple, first they are carniovores, second they got sharp razor teeth,
this combination alone is enough.. but lemme continue, if it happens dat i come across a shark obviously ima be in the water,
and water is not my element, im slow, cant see well, cant fight back well cause water resist my movements, so dats a big disadvantage.
and the shark dont now that im a "human", dat i got a family at home, dat my friends are waiting for me, dat my dog is waitin for me,
husband, lover, pizza guy, ur grandmother with the homemade cookies dat she made for u whatever.. they just dont know, they dont have this level of conciousness..
they dont know dat u have dreams, dat u made plans for tomorrow, for next year, they just DONT KNOW, they dont have this conciousness.
so if a shark is hungry or not specifically because of hunger but simple decides to bite u and eventually kill u. they will just do,
and this will just happen. so stop trying to give reasons not to feel afraid of sharks, WE SHOULD feel afraid, they are predators.

Sorry but this really has put me off going into the sea altogether, absolutely pure terror for Me!! Sorry but the statistics don't make a shred of difference for me, 4 people dying of shark bites is 4 too many!!
