  • Singer-songwriter and piano player A.J. Croce purposely avoided music by his late father, Jim Croce, as he began his musical career.
However in recent years, he's returned to his father's catalog for renewed inspiration as a singer-songwriter.
Croce joined ideastream's Dan Polletta for Applause Performances before a sold-out concert of "Croce Plays Croce" at the Music Box Supper Club. Joining A.J. were guitar player Garrett Stoner and bassist David Barard.

You manage to remind me of your father's sound, yet make the music your own at the same time. Excellent!

A.J. I respect you over the way that you went your own way and only played Jims music when you felt it was right. keep rolling on.

It is such an honor to hear your music today for the first time. It means so much. My late husband and I were great fans of your father. My husband was so hurt by his death. We followed his music for every show your father was a guest. We were so much in love and bought every record. We would listen for hours and hours. I enjoyed finding out about you. I so enjoy your music. This has lifted me.

Just shared this with my almost 25 year old daughter. She knows I love Jim Croce s music but I told her if life ever makes her feel like she wants to give in she needs to draw from AJ. He is an inspiration in many ways and as gifted as his father. Leon Russell is another of my heros and I had no idea he and AJ wrote together but his playing definitely has Leon flavor. I enjoyed this very much and learned some amazing things about AJ and artists that have inspired him. Lovely interview.

AJ is an absolute treasure! Seen him at the time we were about the age that he is now…feeling like the dinosaurs in the audience, haha. I can’t recommend getting to know his music, from the beginning, strongly enough. He was so genuinely and generously kind to us, as was his guitarist/bassist (who happened to play both instruments slung around his neck for one number!), making us feel as if we were just as important as anyone they had personally known for years. I can’t get out to shows just now, but when I am able 🤞, I will be honored to attend any of AJ’s event’s! The man is a #1 class act and human doing 💜🌻☮️ Ty for sharing this here!

Just happened to stumble upon this video and knew of A.J. playing at his mom's restaurant in San Diego years ago. Actually had a lovely dinner date at the restaurant in the 1990's. Wish it had been an evening when there was live music but it was mid-week. Love A.J.'s voice and piano style of really showing up his talents.

im sorry, i have to pause this video yet again to say something… its hard to type with tears going on, but when he sang “operator” .. well, it brings me back to when i used to sing it with my (recently late friend) Oakley, at karaoke of all things… he would do the main part and i would harmonize. we did the same thing for Leroy brown, so, i just had to chime in again. i miss my friend so much and again, I see the pain in AJ’s eyes and soul, but please keep honoring your dad and do what you do as this is about you!

I think he is more of a jazz/soul performer. I prefer him singing with the piano. I admittingly prefer AJs rendition of You don't mess around with Jim over Jim's original version. IMO AJs version is better but not with the Operator. I think AJ failed to express the emotion behind the song but he is no doubt as good with strings
