I don’t have any tattler lids, but what I do is reuse my Ball(etc) lids. I have had 100% success rate and have used them over and over. I make sure before I use them that they still pop loud and are not bent. I am 81 years old and still canning year round. Meat, veggies, soups, pie fillings, jellies, etc. It’s not recommended by the FDA, but that is what I do and it works for me. It was recommended to me by an elderly gentleman years ago.

I too have no issues reusing lids. As long as they are in good shape I have had zero problems. I am curious though, do you ONLY reuse lids that the undercoating is still intact with ZERO rust or blemishes? I am finding most lids even after I use them only once have rust or blemishes on the underside. They are now so poorly made that I notice these blemishes IMMEDIATELY AFTER pulling them from the pressure or water bath canner!! Unfortunately, this has been the case even with my 1st box of ForJar lids too. ForJars has replaced them which I appreciate, but I am hoping the quality really is there & I just got a faulty batch, fingers crossed.

@@jenniferpepler5843 Hello Jennifer, yes I only reuse lids that the undercoating is intact(zero rust or blemishes). Another thing I forgot to mention before is if my lid has a slight bend at the edge, I stand it up where the bend is against a hard surface and rock the lid back and forth a few times to bring it back in shape. I don’t throw it away. I have reused my lids many, many times. Have had excellent results. I hope this is helpful. Best wishes.

As long as the jar is sealed and the lid is not rusting it should not matter that the lid has been used before.

A word of caution, from a Tattler-user. If you are a beginner…start with the single-use lids FIRST. The “learning-curve is real…but doable. Expect about a 10-15% failure rate, your first time. This is “normal”, until you get used to them. Are they worth learning and mastering? Yes.

    • @renitameares3838
      @renitameares3838 14 днів тому +3

I only used my Tattlers for water bath canning one or 2 jars in a batch. If they failed, it could go in the fridge for immediate use. As I became comfortable, I did more jars then a few in a pressure batch. There is definitely a learning curve.

I have canned for close to 15 years now. I am interested in learning about these lids but am wondering why you think there is such a learning curve with them? It seems pretty straightforward so I don't understand why there would be such a high failure rate for us newbies. Your thoughts are appreciated!! Thanks so much! God Bless!

    • @renitameares3838

@ the process is slightly different than regular lids with rings. You have 3 parts with the Tattler or Harvest Guard lids. Finger tighten for Ball style lids. Tighten Tattler/Harvest Guard lids then back off 1/4”. Never crank down on a Ball style lids but when you remove Tattler/Harvest Guard from the canner, you crank down until it cools down. FYI, Tattler and Harvest Guard are owned by the same family so basically the same lid/gasket system. I have both.

I've never used tattler lids so found this video very informative. Thank you.
Regarding the stripped or warped ring...I have some of those too. I spotted it as soon as you threaded it onto the jar. It wouldn't have sealed, and quite likely it would have come off during the canning process. What I've been doing with those defective or damaged rings is mark them immediately with a Sharpie pen so I don't attempt to use them again for canning. (NFC - not for canning) They're still okay to use for temporary storage of things that don't need to be sealed.

I have had that threading issue before. There is some jars that have a wider thread spacing. Perhaps one from a Store Product? Then the rings dont screw as low on them.
And sometimes the rings can become Bent. The rings they send with new jars are actually pretty flimsy and if you one to try to pop the lid, they bend.
Ive also noticed rings denting down OR up, in the center hole area. I will fix them by carefully bending by hand, finger pressure is all it takes!
I checked into Tattler once. At that time the prices were really high, so i passed on them. With today's prices for throw aways, i should reassess.
I am glad you showed Us hiw to Do this System! Thanks! ❤

@victorialg1270 I wonder if you are doing the same thing my dad did with his. Many older recipes that are hot water processed that seal just because they're hot product being placed in hot jars will not work with these lids. My dad thought they would cuz that's how he's always made his relish and jam. When using tattler lids you can put hot product into hot jars but then you have to put that jar, as she has shown you, into hot water- bring to boil then time it for 10-15 minutes depending on jar size. I'm not sure I explained that well but hopefully I did.

The Tattler company says to tighten the ring then back it off 1/4 inch initially before processing. Then after processing you do crank it down after the initial rest period. I miss the ‘pings”, though. Also when you remove the lid for use, you can mark the red ring with a mark after each processing use. The life of each ring is said to be about 10 uses.

USDA guidelines for tomato sauce say 1/4 inch headspace, but with tattler lids that will not work. (Ask me how I know. Ugh). I use a china marker to write on the lids date and product. This can be washed off with hot water, scrub with baking soda if needed. I miss the ping, but the savings and always on hand make up for it. There is a learning curve, but worth it. Practicing with water is a good idea!

The jars come with a similar system than the tattler lids, bit the disc on top is made of glass. The rubber seals look exactly the same....Consol Glass do not manufacture the rubber seals anymore. I have about 80 jars like that. Do you think that the tattler seals will work with the glass lids?

      What about Formaldehyde?
Many questions have been asked about the existence of formaldehyde in Acetal Copolymer. While it is true formaldehyde is present in trace amounts, research proves it is only released at very high temperatures, well above any temperatures found in home food canning. Here are the facts.
Heating our brand of acetal copolymer above 460 degrees F (238 C) should be avoided. At these temperatures, formaldehyde, a colorless and irritating gas that can be harmful in high concentrations, is generated.

They do have antique glass lids that you could probably use with the Tattler rubber rings and a ring.

I started "collecting" harvest guard lids during covid. I think next year I'll have enough but I also use old bail type jars. Anyways... just buy some every year! The more you buy, the cheaper they are

It doesn’t matter to me who is on the shirt, I’d rather not see political messages on videos about other things. It’s just distracting and divisive.

Ladies, enjoy the instruction she is trying to teach you and ignore what offends you. This video is not about you and she knows who is in charge, the REAL KING, our Lord Jesus! The days of everyone being offended, it’s long overdue to leave people alone, just love one another and stop focusing on differences.
In humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interest of the others. Philippians 2:3-4
