Jesse has been eyeing a quality cooler for quite some time now. We had a couple of coolers that were cheap (or free), but they just didn’t do the job of keeping things cool. Since we spent so much time running errands after grocery shopping or picking up our milk, and since we spend so much time on the job site and don’t want to go inside for cold beverages, we decided that now was the time to pull the trigger since our friend introduced us to a yeti-type cooler at a fraction of the cost!

A HOT cooler uses up a lot of ice just to cool the cooler down! Take it out of at garage or truck and put it inside , open for awhile to cool off. Works much better.
pro tip: fill your cooler up as much as possible, the more cold things in there the longer it will keep cool, also it is recommended to pre chill the cooler, also the cooler will stay cool a lot longer if everything in it is pre cooled, so if you put warm milk in, other items will suffer, you could build an ice barrier between the stuff that is already cold and the stuff that is warm, that way the cold stuff stays around the same temp and the warm stuff cools off a bit more
Rtic got sued by Yeti in Texas because of their heavy use of the Yeti name and logo on their site for side by side comparison. In the end it really doesn't matter Yeti cooler, Rtic cooler all made in China.
I have an igloo playmate and I used bubble foil wrap to make a liner for it, but the secret is to make your own ice packs out of a 64 oz bottle and add 1/4 cup of table salt to it. freeze it of course, and now my cheapy playmate cooler drops to around 22 degrees within about 25 mins. 8 hrs later in 85 degree weather (not in direct sun) 41 degrees... with your new Artic cooler just take one of those milk bottles and fill it 3/4 full add 1/4 cup table salt, freeze and you're golden all day... love the vids!
wow there's 10 minutes of my life gone
From many years off grid in rural Africa- I heartily recommend wireless temperature senders normally used for indoor outdoor thermometers. Battery powered, cheap, and work great. We had one in our freezer, fridge, etc, could see the temp from the outside the freezer. Helps to know when to start the generator etc.
Rtic also makes 32oz cups they work great I live here in central California where I do construction wanted to test it out filled the cup with ice in 105 degrees + , set the cup in the back of my pick up bed at 8 a.m. at the end of the day 3pm when it was time to go home the cup still had ice in it
Basic law of hot and cold. warn air rises . cold air falls. ice should be higher then food!
...ya know, my sons 4 year old kids know that just from going to the beach or out hunting. I thought that was
common, basic knowledge.
I have an old 20 year old Coleman cooler that is okay for daily outings but won't keep ice in it for extended periods. I was looking for a new cooler with wheels and purchased a Coleman not paying to much attention to the model or type. I soon noticed that the ice would last for days in it when the other one would become water. So I went back to the store to buy a second one and that is when I noticed that the model called the Xtreme 5. They list for $70 and I got mine for $50 on sale. It doesnt have a locking lid like the RTIC brand but the lids are very tight fitting where it takes two hands to pop it open. At that price I could buy 3 or 4 of them compared to the RTIC.
Alissa seems really really smart. Would love to see her in charge more. Might make the homesteading way more efficient :)
4 Wheeler magazine did a cooler comparison 8f 4 different coolers. Can't remember 2 of them, other 2 were Yeti and RTIC. The Yeti came in dead last.
We own a trucking company and across the street from our commercial building is AT&T so one of the Engineers came up to me and asked if I needed a cooler. We live in Florida so of course we always need an extra cooler. I go to his truck and he hands me a brand new RTIC 65 for free. He said he ordered it online and it was to big so he didn't want to send it back. Thank you Mr. Engineer.
I've been using Coleman coolers all my life and have never had a problem until I needed chilled food to last 3+ days. I was torn between Yeti, RTIC, and Siberian. All great coolers but my hunting buddies said to go with the Siberian. No more worries about keeping food cold, this baby is fantastic!
Just a tip i did to mine, they make a plug for the drain that converts it to hose threads. I put one of those with a brass shut off valve on it. That thing shoots water a good few feet, meaning when you drain the water out, it drains out in a stream instead of dribbles out, and you don't have to move the cooler very much if it lives inside your truck.
This is for your subscribers. If you can get an RTIC that's fine. They are usually on backorder and they match up about the same with the other high $$ coolers when it comes to ice retention. If you want a really good, equal quality cooler for the same price as an RTIC get an Engel. See the UA-cam comparison vids. I have a YETI 45 and a new Engel 65. Went camping for 3 days, it was raining when I got home so I didn't dump the ice out of the coolers. Two days later the Engel still had some ice, the Yeti, just water. And the Engel was $100 cheaper. I do think the Yeti is better built though and will last longer, so if you are going be tough on it on a regular basis the Yeti may be worth the money. Don't get me wrong , Yeti is a Cadillac cooler, you just have to decide what your needs are.
The name formed on the bottom also provides rigidity to help strengthen the bottom base.
Perfect timing on that RTIC cooler. Just moving now to Off Grid property where we will be dry camping. We did notice that we were melting ice in our Igloo cooler like it wasn't even in a cooler and that was in a motel room and in a car with continuous AC as cat and dog are with us. Definitely checking out RTIC!!
It's probably already been commented on here but I learned something this summer in that ever since I was a kid, when the ice started to melt I would drain the water out of the cooler, but evidently and I saw this as true, when you remove all the water out of a cooler you now have made a place for all the air to get around each and every ice cube thus melting it faster. So the next time you have ice and it starts to melt, let it sit in the water, we found that the pop and other items stayed absolutely ice cold twice as long as when we drained the water. For reals!
Fill your orange cooler lid with GreatStuff foam insulation. And use a bungee to help hold the lid down for a tighter seal.
I have been looking at yeti coolers but couldn't talk myself into the price, thanks guys this looks doable.
You need Dry Ice on top to keep thinks frozen... on the bottom with instillation to keep thinks cold... not a failure of the ice chest, just expected more than any ice chest can deliver without Dry Ice... possibly if you placed the ice cream under the ice....
FYI At zero degrees ice cream start melting...When I worked for Schwab use cream company the back of those trucks are coolers they do not have refrigeration while driving you have to plug the trucks into a 230 volt plug at night to run the refrigeration unit. During the day they are just a giant cooler...once the back end cooler part reached zero the ice cream starts to get soft.
I have the 30 oz tumbler that keeps cold or hot. It works very well, and it was over half the cost of a Yetti. I love it, and use it everyday.
I am very thankful and pleased, that a new video was updated tonight. I get a lot of entertainment from following your processes There is no way I will ever build my own home, yet I love watching the two of you walk through it! I am amazed by the sheer amount of back breaking effort you both expend. Wiring all that rebar? in the heat, crouching down, extending your arms to get it just right? Holy crap! And that was just one job. I like watching how you both are kind to one another and work together for your goals, very inspiring! Thanks for all the great videos, you are getting the job done, and doing it well!
if you want to have a chance to keep it all cool with your old cooler or the new one try keeping the Ice on the top always as if you put it on the side or bottom the cold will not dissipate upward and stay were its at, remember warm goes up and cool goes down, it will freeze whats right beside it but will not keep anything cold 2 inch away. I went true those test many time.
the rubber feet are to keep it from sliding around in the truck bed
unless you throw it in a fire, you should have that cooler forever. Definitely the way to go. The initial purchase stings a little, but when you see how well they work and the fact that it will last forever, it is a very smart purchase. I have the little one for work but hope to get the 65 for camping and hunting trips.
I used to work at RTIC. There's no family connection to YETI. Yeti was started by two bothers, and RTIC was started by two brothers. Somehow that evolved into some rumor about brothers splitting up and both starting their own cooler company. Not true. The original brothers from Yeti still work at Yeti.
I've a small RTIC to use in the truck while I'm out Monday through Friday. When I start my home build I'm going to get a large one to keep drinks cold for the crew.
Use the old cooler to haul around tools at the work site.
How cool is it that you know the cows that give you milk!
Really liking my $65 Coleman Extreme 5 100qt I have.
Pre-cooling REALLY helps.
yellow2000SR
I like my $40 Coleman extreme 72.
Old cooler can make a dandy tool caddy for hauling hand tools around your job site.
Just get an ARB Fridge Freezer !
We've had one for five years now here in Australia while we do our homestead/ house build!
Don't know if they sell them anymore but I bought a rubber made cooler about eight years ago and it was labeled for up to 24 hours. We use it all the time in the back of our Jeep. 24 hours after putting ice in it'll still have some ice left. I think it was about one forth what you spent. Not sure if they are still sold but if they are check them out.
The little screw vent with the small opening is for DRY ICE venting. When that cooler seals, the CO2 turns to gas, expands and can make pressure inside the cooler. Just crack the vent, a little, and the gas, that is heavy exits the cooler, nice cooler.
Lol, guys try making ice jugs with salt water. Salt water freezes colder works better than plan ice.
Love the comments, they really enrich the whole experience. The good, the bad and the ugly are all interesting reads. PLL content does a good job of stirring the pot for this entertaining thread. Keep up the good work guys. One last comment - when is a cooler confused for a freezer? (answer: when it is discussed on this channel)
10 minute video 1 minute of infornation, thanks comcast wannabees
We have the RTIC 45 and 65 (pre lawsuit editions) We freeze salt water in ozarka bottles and it stays colder longer
I took my old Colman cooler a new drilled holes in it and filled it with expanding foam and it did so much better for a free cooler!
In all fairness, you put all the ice packs on the bottom of the cooler and cold air flows down not up. If you had put the packs and ice on top of everything you would have better results. Thanks for the info on the RTic.
checked the links. The 2 brands are pretty much the same price now. only a few dollars separating them. In fact, the spot price on the yeti was cheaper for the 20qt model when i checked. $224 for rtic, $199 for yeti.
My Pelican 65 and 20 keep frozen food at least 3 days (longest I've tried) but I don't keep it in a hot truck pre-heating it on a 100+ degree day before I load it and don't let it sit in the sun all day either ;-)
To use any cooler one must prime it with ice for several hours to get the interior good and cold otherwise the walls will not be cold enough to protect the cold goods.
The problem was you didn't let it cool off before you used it. In perfect world you refrigerate the cooler then use it. But if it's room temp it should last for 5-7 days.
I am waiting for the Chinese to start knocking these coolers off, like they did with the tumblers.
That old cooler on wheels will make a good roll around tool box on your job.
You should find someone that works in a hospital. They get refrigerated meds in shipping coolers. They are designed to keep the meds cool for days in the hot son if needed. They throw them away after they get them in. They are full of reusable ice packs as well that they just throw away. I have a few. I can put some ice and drinks in it and throw it in the trunk and it stays cold for 4 days. If I break it I just pick up another one that they are going to throw away.
I was waiting for a freezer upgrade since the AC was installed and heated the tent/shelter up even more... now they updated the cooler
Small port is for releasing vacuum and aids in opening lid easier avoiding damage to the seals!!
We should have gotten a big cooler when we were building our container home, but with all the tools, materials, 6 kids, and all the kid stuff, we tried to stick with PB&Js and non refrigerated things.
if you would have gotten dry Ice it would have kept the ice cream solid. ice cream melts at 32 degrees. It needs to be sub zero for it to stay hard frozen.
At 2:48 Jessie says" we did a little research". Well there's a first!
Heard they work better if you put loose ice in them and not the ice packs . Plus when did you all get the 4 wheel drive truck . Or have you all had it all a long and I just haven't noticed it .
BTW, I love you guys. Everything you put in that cooler is equal to what I consume as well, same brand and all. I envy the house you guys are building too!
pre-cooling the cooler should make a world of difference. The entire thermal wall needed to be cooled down, so it was literally sucking the cold out of everything that you put into it. Once it's pre-cooled I suspect you will notice a big difference.
I think the larger “drain plug” can be used to plumb in for a live well type use. Looks like the threads are that type
The RTIC cooler is nice, but for your application (and lifestyle) I'd think a repurposed RV fridge might be a better option.
currently the rtic 45 retails for $289 which is $60 cheaper than the yeti. Not quite as amazing as $189, but still a decent discount. I think ill stick with the yeti, since I currently own it(got it yesterday for xmas :)). They look exactly the same and I wouldn't be surprised if they share the same patent
The ice you buy at the convenience store is 50% entrained air. Try replacing it with ice from your ice maker at home. It lasts about 3 times as long!
Can't wait to see the foundation wow your on your way congratulations
Try placing your items on the bottom, then place your bags of ice on the top. Remember, cold air goes lower than the warm air...
Pre cool your cooler for like 4 to 6 hours prior if you can. The new ice will last longer when you do this.
If you stick the cooler in the freezer for a day it will last way longer since the foam freezes. Need a big freezer though.
Wow,has Jesse been practicing this breakup scene for when the property and House is finished?😂😂😂
Cold sinks & heat rises. I find that when I stow the frozen stuff under the ice it fairs better.
Make holes in the cooler rim exterior and fill it up with expanding eurethane.... will keep a lot cooler
Rtic lost a big lawsuit to Yeti in early '17. Thought Rtic was ordered to cease all sales/production of hard sided coolers with current designs. Maybe these are new ones or the last of the old ones>
If you want to keep items frozen you need to use dry ice. Regular ice is great for keeping items cool but it doesn't get below 32°. That's why you need to add salt to the ice when you make homemade ice cream.
You will save so much money in ice with that thing! Good call
DON'T toss old coolers. A MILLION USES! starting with mouse proof container. home made air conditioner/dry goods (nuts) storage, and on and on....
Austin-based Yeti Coolers LLC and Cypress-based Rtic Coolers LLC have reached a settlement that will require Rtic to redesign some of its products.
The agreement settles a series of lawsuits Yeti first filed against Rtic in July 2015 claiming trademark infringement. Rtic, pronounced “Arctic,” manufacturers coolers and drinkware similar to Yeti’s product - the comparison is featured prominently on its website.
Hey city folks, put the ice in the cooler first for a few hours and then load you stuff. I mean if you want your stuff to be cold. If you want your stuff really cold put ice in the day before and sprinkle some salt in there. Oh and take the ice out of the damn bag.
i use my rtec for a table chair and a ladder ant i weigh 300 plus pounds
The rubber on the bottom is to prevent it from slipping on boats :)
At least orangy has its own wheels. Who unloads their cooler in the heat? Thanks for the heads up on the RTIC. I could never bring myself to buy a YETI.
you need to put some water.. when the water gets cold because of the ice, everythng will get cool!
Cheers from Argentina!
You should try burying the food in loose ice cubes, that will keep things cooler longer. Also you'd probably need two bags of ice for that load.
Coleman Xtreme 6. Cheap and good enough - under $70.
Dude .. tell us the story .. that is what makes stuff so cool.. Dooo itttt..
Rtic is the exact same design as a yeti to the naked eye and yes I own a yeti
If you could have put the ice cream under the ice, it would have been colder. And, of course, if you had precooled the cooler, etc., that would have helped.
It has 2 Drains!? That's AWESOME!
I love my RTIC.. That sucker keeps ice for days! I have a 20..
Don't ditch your old orangie just yet , it might be just as good as the RTIC
Interesting. My yeti 50 cost 300 delivered and is tall enough for an opened bottle of wine. Maybe an interesting alternative.
that old cooler has new outdoor toolbox written all over it. just like my old gas grill did.
You will have to put those wheels on the new R TIC cooler.
Been waiting for the concrete pour and what, a cooler unboxing video?! :D Have to wait a bit more I guess...
IKR? I've been waiting for the pour for a week. Such teases. ;-) . Clearly the forms are there and there are new materials about, but couldn't see well enough to tell if the concrete is poured yet.
I mean, I'm sure that in real time their concrete was poured...what, 7 days ago? But in the timeline of this video, I think the concrete is not yet poured, and the work they're doing in the background is probably running the lines from the foundation to the septic tank. And the materials I'm guessing are the underground wall materials or forms.
There's trailer full of lumber in background. Is it the form lumber... Hmmmm... Have to put my Sherlock Holmes - mode on...
Within the first 25 seconds of this video, Alyssa states that they are taking a break from the concrete work because of the heat… thus a quick box opening video. Pay attention and quit complaining about the concrete.... If you want to stay current follow them on Facebook!
She's just saying that they have to take a break from working because of the heat, not a word about concrete... And I'm not complaining.
if it was 100 outside more then likely the inside of that truck was more like 150+ degree. so thats not bad for that ice not melting.
When you make something you have to have a patent so that know one can steal your design, and you have to renew the patent every year and yeti didn’t renew it so rtic came in and and made there same exact coolers but for a cheaper price and yeti got pissed off and tried to sue rtic but they couldn’t because they didn’t renew there patent.
Just a little cue u yanna keep stuff cold..put the ice on top instead of under all ur food!! HEat goes up cold go down!!
put your food on the bottom and the ice on top cold air sinks to the bottom.
Put the frozen goods under the ice and the refrigerated items above the ice.
by the way thats not how you pack a cooler either...if you read the yeti pamphlet...2:1 ratio. you cant fill it with 95percent food items and little bit of ice in 100F come on
Don't know if it's better or not because I filled mine with ice food drinks out in the sun and my yet I had ice in it 10 days latter so for my 499.00 thats pretty good and mine is about the same size maybe a little bigger same latches and handles and a big tray inside.
I got two Yeti coolers and my Father in law has an RTIC. MY Yeti was holding ice longer. Petty sure their are others that are better than a yeti. Also if you want your handles straps to break get an Rtic. Ask me how I know. Supporting a company that got its name by blatantly ripping off Yeti (see lawsuit) is lame.
This is NOT a cooler question. With the foundation of your house have drain tile around the foundation? I am asking as the back wall is down slope from that big hill to the rear and there will be run off during rain storms and when the snow thaws in the spring. Lastly are you doing any exterior waterproofing on the underground portions of the walls?
A couple videos back they mentioned leaving enough room for adding drainpipe around the foundation so my guess is they will add drain pipes.
Hey got a Question for you guy's.. Where the Frack is your Fridge/Freezer is it in the Freak'n shed that has NO AIR FLOW..????
If your Fridge/freezer is in that shed.. it has no way of dumping the heat from working.. if you know how Fridges work they need plenty of Cool air to get rid of excess heat...
