In essence, slide canceling involves the character sliding by tapping the crouch button while sprinting. Then, during the slide animation, double tap the crouch button to quickly return to a sprint with minimal downtime. This allows you to move as fast as sprinting with the benefit of being harder to hit as you transition from sliding to sprinting with janky 3rd person animations. The reason people are complaining is because it drastically speeds up the pace of the game when past games had limited amount of sprint and a short sprint-out time where you can't shoot as you go from sprint to neutral, punishing blindly rushing areas. Does something like unintentional movement tech in a PvP FPS which is an exploit and not a part of the dev's design still deserve to be in a game and carried on to future titles? It's hard to argue for the removal of this tech in singleplayer games, but what about multiplayer games?
It depends on how much potential that unintentional mechanic has. Often during game development, you plan something, but discover something else is far more fun about your game. Devil May Cry's juggling system came from a bug in another game Kamiya was working on, for example. Korean Backdashing was unintentional and was patched out of Tekken 4. For an FPS, the meta of those games tends to be reaction times, sightlines and how you occupy zones. Whether or not movement tech improves that or makes gameplay more interesting or more frustrating is something you ask person-to-person, but usually people who like to push themselves, love it. I'd love it, if I cared about first person shooters. But FPS aren't designed to be competitive, they're designed to be lazy timesink games that are a bit of fun with your mates. You *can* play it competitively, but that's more a testament to people who enjoy FPS. If your team of high-school lads is getting ruined by a nutjob who can skid half the map in a second, and you don't want to meet that challenge just to have fun with your mates, the game is a failure to its demographic. That's all to say: I dunno. Depends what they want to make, or what they're being told to make. Western games usually don't like having animation cancelling bugs in them.
I think about it now and then, and I'd probably just talk a bit of shit about 5. It's got a silly story, at times. Someone's gotta tell me what makes that story special. But I DO want to do Ace Combat again. Saving it for something special though.
