Sometimes one of my guinea pigs Sanjay goes into such a deep sleep I have to check him then he suddenly wakes up and looks at me as if to say what did you wake me up for?

Apparently yes, when they're lying down at least. I'm not sure how they do it, but they go into a trance like doze, where they're not moving or active, but still able to sense what is going on around them. If they sleep with their eyes closed (only brave ones or guinea pigs that feel fully secure will do this), then it's pretty much a normal sleep.

Safety thing, they are prey animals and they keep their eyes open to be aware of any potential predators around.
