  • Detailed video of yard operations on the HO scale KCS 3rd sub. Nearly all trains into and out of the yard are shown. Somewhat long: we condensed a 3 1/2 hour operating session down to 67 minutes.
    Begins with a 1 minute 40 second narrated overview - skip that if you want to get right to seeing the trains running.
    The RFID system is shown in this video. To learn more about that, see this video: • RFID on the KCS 3rd
    Note: This was recorded during the COVID-19 Pandemic. You'll see some people wearing masks, but many others not. All people not wearing masks have been fully vaccinated for a minimum of 20 days.

    I drive for a company that works with Union Pacific, and it blows me away to see model railroaders operating their layouts like the real deal!

    I love the fact that people can stay busy doing what they have done and like to do all of their lives and be able to walk away and go do what ever if they do not want to be there anymore. I recently semi retired. Lots of days off from here on out. I'll never stop until I'm just to old because I love what I do. I have been considering this hobby with DCC but not nearly on this scale. Thanx for the video.

    Very enjoyable video. The audio/visual, edidting and captions were made it easy to stay with what was going on. As a beginner, I used this as a training film for me lol. I especially liked the yard work, and the use of the rfid and tablet makes me want to do that as well, eventually. Anyway, well done to all involved.

      Brandon, thank you for viewing and for leaving this comment. The hardware and RFID tags came from Model Railroad Control Systems. they also have software that comes with it, but I wrote my own to interface with JMRI since that controls all of my car movements. • @TTownTrainFan
      @TTownTrainFan  3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching the video. I'm not really sure how many, I've never counted. More than a few to be sure! Maybe 70 locos, 700 cars - but that's a guess (I have all of that in JMRI but it gives me a list and I'd have to manually count them - I'm too lazy for that!)

  • @oubrioko

    *Question 1:* Did prototypical KCS trains that dropped and added cars at Heavener during the early 1980s arrive pre-blocked, such that the Heavener drill or trim job could simply pull the entire Heavener drop as a single coherent cut from one end of the arriving train?
    *Question 2:* If these trains did arrive preblocked... did the Heavener drill job block cars added to these trains in sequence for 2nd and 4th subdivision terminals that the trains would work down the line (i.e. _Watts, Gentry, Neosho, Pittsburg_ northbound and _DeQueen, Ashdown, Texarkana_ southbound)?
    Another superb operations video from an impressive layout. Cheers

    • @TTownTrainFan
      @TTownTrainFan  3 роки тому +1

      You have significant knowledge of the KCS - and railroading. I’m impressed!
      Q1 the answer is yes: all of the cars for Heavener were in a single block, both on the prototype and on our mode. So the drill always pulls them as one unit and then classifies them further by destination on the 3rd sub. They took advantage of that in our video for train 2 when the Yardmaster wanted to get the crew on the train and the train out without waiting for the drill to sort all the cars on that single outbound cut.

      Q2: the trim blocks cars by destination, whether by 3rd sub location for local trains, or major yard if off the 3rd sub. The terminals (major yards) on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th subs were Kansas City, Pittsburg, Heavener and Pittsburg. Plus to your point, #77 and #78, the Super Dogs worked the terminals plus Watts, Neosho, Sallisaw and a few others. Some of the other towns you mentioned were served by Dodgers.
      Disclaimer: I know very little about KCS operations south of Shreveport.

    At about 41 minutes there’s a BN coal train that heads in to the yard for a crew change, and the dynamic brakes are mentioned. Is this the operator pushing the function button to make this happen?
    By the way, I keep coming back to this and I think Sallisaw. I’ve never operated anything besides my small 2.5’x4’ N scale loop with two industries and a staging track.

      @@TTownTrainFan how do you get JMRI to do yard operations? Do you have to stack trains so they arrive at different times? I also tried to get my yard tracks to have specific destinations like yours, but I could not figure out how to make it work

    • @TTownTrainFan
      @TTownTrainFan  2 роки тому

      @@JoeG-firehousewhiskey There are several ways to do this in JMRI ops. The way I chose we to set up every yard track as a "C/I" or "Classification/Interchange" track. Then I set up each track to accept setouts from only certain trains, and allow pickups from only one or two trains. Half of my yard services longer distance trains (trains that run to staging) and the other half services trains going to local destinations. So a long-distance or through train would drop cars for local destinations on the various tracks destined for local towns, and pick up cars destined for north or south staging. Locals work the opposite way: they pick up cars for the local town(s) they are servicing from a track dedicated for that, but set out all their cars to the various tracks for trains outbound to staging. Thanks for asking.

      Fair comment, I never thought of that. This is the first of my model RR videos that I did with ANY narration, though I do it for my train simulator videos. And I restricted that to before the actual ops video started.
      My thinking was, I wanted viewers to experience what it’s really like during our operating sessions: hearing the locomotive sounds, hearing the operators discuss things, etc. Next one I do I’ll try and cut down on the on-screen graphics.
