2 weeks away from having knee replacement surgery, and showering (living alone) has me the most nervous. Your video(s) are so encouraging and helpful. Will have a friend/neighbor/caregiver available, but for most part, I'll be alone. With your videos, I now feel more confident. Thanks so much.
This is very useful, thank you! I took my first shower today after having bunion surgery two weeks ago and it was more challenging than I’d anticipated! I like my dr. but they really have you a pair of crutches and a list of about three instructions and let you figure out the rest. Your videos are very valuable!
People need to get over the idea we have to SHOWER to be clean. Showers are relatively new: 4o yrs or so. People did what we now call sponge bathing, or if they were wealthy enough to afford a huge water bill, taking a bath a couple times a week and sponge bathe the rest of the time. Take the person with a foot problem. Why risk the shower at all??
I am so grateful for the information you provide! I broke my ankle 4 weeks ago. Watched this video and the one about installing a hand held shower head. I ordered the equipment you recommend in both the first week in my recovery and it was a game changer! Thank you so much!
Thanks for the great videos. I'm a BK amputee and can't survive without my transfer bench. I had one that was a commode style which I loved, it made washing myself so much easier. It was padded and instead of plastic it was wood under the padding and the wood rotted and I had to throw it out.
I just had knee surgery. The toilet has the raised seat with handles, and it’s right next to the tub. That toilet handle helps me transfer to the edge of the bench. My walker stays a bit to the side in front of the toilet.
Could 2 standard shower seats work for transfer? There would be a gap, but if the concern is balance on one foot to step in could sitting outside the tub to get your feet in be an option? I’m thinking even having them perpendicular to each other rather than sliding across? Just a thought that came to me as I watched this in preparation for upcoming TKR.
I am having a problem finding a transfer bench that meets my needs. I just moved and the tub has a height of 19 inches. The shower bench I have provides that clearance, but the in-tub legs don't get short enough and therefore the bench is not level. Do you have any suggestions?
My sister is a new below amputee. She is still in rehab.im trying to get stuff together for her.loo, ing at the options maybe the shower transfer chair would be safer but how would you cover it to keep water from getting everywhere?
Just a suggestion: Can you tie a wide, bright, colored ribbon on the leg with the operation? It would make it easier to see and visualize. Keep up the good videos. Thanks.
The safest option is to do it seated. I often have my clients put a towel on the toilet that is opened up to sit on and then dry your body. I have also found terry cloth robes draped over the body work well to get started then sit to finish drying with a smaller towel in the non-surgical hand.
Very helpful information. Question: With a transfer bench how do you keep the water from rolling outside to the floor? I have a shower curtain, where do you put it to stop the floor from becoming soaked?
Great question! I address it in some detail in this video. Basically you’ll want to slide the curtain through the opening in the bench. ua-cam.com/video/K3BfbvaxErQ/v-deo.html
Depending on the transfer needs I would suggest a shower chair with a smaller base to fit within the shower space. If a bench setup is still needed for transfer you might be able to remove the glass doors and use a seat like this one: amzn.to/3DD3dy5
My caregiver put towels at the base of the bathtub. The shower curtain goes on the outside of the bench. I tried hard to point the handheld shower away from the curtain. We were pleasantly surprised that there was very little water on the towels on the floor.
Do you have suggestions for what works for smaller showers that have a glass shower door? (I'm struggling to figure out what works in my shower that is the size or smaller of a gym shower, but has a glass door.) Would love anyone's suggestions!
You can as long as it doesn’t interfere with the stability of the feet. I have cut out spaces on the mat to make room for the feet and that can work pretty well.

The sliding tub bench causes water to leak into the floor. If you use one where you set down and slide yourself over and you are older, feeble or have trouble with balance you can tear skin because you don’t have clothes on when you get into the shower. If you are clothed it’s not so much of a problem.
Thanks so much for the videos and explanations!! Have you ever experienced using a LTB with more of the old-style, more narrow based tubs? Would they work or would it probably just be on a case to case basis?
Older style tubs can be very tricky because they vary greatly on the size seat they can accommodate. Plus, there’s the consideration of the person using it (size, weight, balance or strength issues), so the short answer is yes, I have used some LTB’s with these showers but it’s always a case by case consideration.
I would suggest a tub transfer bench if you think you will struggle with stepping over the edge of the tub. If you consider earlier in your recovery you’ll be dealing with bandages, the bench will make life much easier.
You can cut a cheap shower curtain to fit in the gap between the seat portion of the bench and the outer portion of the seat. There’s a video here that shows it. ua-cam.com/video/K3BfbvaxErQ/v-deo.html

Having an example of a walk-in shower versus a tub w/shower would be helpful, as many homes no longer have tubs. Good information though, Thanks!

Thank you for the lifesaving information and mentioning the instability of the shower seat to be cautious with
Good video! Well explained. Thank you

My concern is small bathroom with little entry space to enter the tub or place the walker. The toilet is directly beside the tub.

Love your videos! Can you make a video on best adaptive equipment for stroke patients with hemiparesis? Would be SOOO helpful, thanks!:)
That’s an awesome topic! I’ll get working 😉

Glad to help!
When I couldn’t lift my leg safely over the tub I knew it was time to use the transfer bench. 🎉
Glad you were open to making a change for your safety and comfort! Best wishes ❤️
Discovered your videos. I was wondering about drying off after showering when you have had rotary cuff surgery. Any suggestions?

@@EquipMeOT Great idea. Thanks.
Do shower chairs fit comfortably in the bottom of a standard bath tub ?
Can you give info for double amputees?
Do you have a make and model number for the transfer bench that just comes to the outer edge of the tub as shown at 3:52 in the video.

Getting a custom wooden bench made of teak is probably the best bet
Can you use a bath mat in the shower when you use the transfer bench? It seems to me that might help with possible slippery tub floor.

how can you close the curtain around the tub to keep the water from off the floor?

Watch her video on how to cut the curtain and slide it between the bench seat to stop the water!
She has a video on how to fix your curtain to prevent water spills!

How do you keep water off the floor with a bench that is partially outside or on the tub?
I cover that it pretty good detail in this video ⬇️

Amazing. Shout out to Occupational Therapist.
❤️❤️❤️
What would be best for recovering from a bunion surgery?
It would depend on your bathroom setup, do you have a walk-in shower or a tub combo?
@@EquipMeOT a tub combo
I would suggest a tub transfer bench if you think you will struggle with stepping over the edge of the tub. If you consider earlier in your recovery you’ll be dealing with bandages, the bench will make life much easier.

My shower stool, chairs, benches etc keep breaking. I know the legs are made of aluminum. I want to add rungs to them.
I'm looking for a shower chair with 300 lb capacity. Any suggestions?
This one has a 500# weight capacity!

Thanks ❤️🙏🏽👍🏽
You’re welcome!!!
Very low chair though my tub is very high.
I need help for the gentleman who needs a shower chair
So they designed a bench that floods the bathroom and we paid for this.
Or maybe the landlord's who take HUD subsidies for senior/disabled housing could just redo these 60 year old bathrooms with tubs into showers.
