    I'm an animator and perspective is extremely important. How all the body parts change in size and look like from every angle and how the character fits within the scenery. Bad perspective in animation can break the scene

    • @drawing3433
      @drawing3433 Рік тому

      Can you recommend some channels or books about this? Or maybe you have some tips?

    • @ChillyGotBenched
      @ChillyGotBenched Рік тому

      @@drawing3433 To practice perspective drawing more, learn how to break down characters or objects and draw them in relation to a horizon line and vanishing point. Practicing Life drawing or drawing models in perspective will help a lot but breaking it down and understanding the simple shapes will help you even more and then add the detail on top without losing the perspective.
      For Books I used Figure Drawing Design and Invention by Michael Hampton but really any book that breaks down the shape properly is good. Dont focus too much about rendering and shading because it can be a crutch sometimes and figure out how to make things look in perspective with simple linework.
      If your focus is animation, remember that as technical and stiff as perspective may feel at first, you still need to get rid of the stiffness and portray motion. Push a pose that feels too stiff and make it dynamic but again dont lose perspective.
      Watch and analyze real life footage of people moving and acting, pause and break down the pose. Try to find the horizon line and check to make sure youre good and maybe try to push the pose more to be more interesting or dynamic. Rarely are we simply straight on
      For UA-cam channels, MondernDayjames, Proko, Ethan becker. Honestly so many people I could suggest but sometimes art tips are repetitive. You just gotta focus and practice more than consume helpful content.
      Hope this helps!

      Graphic Design, so not really art related but still creative. The annoying thing is I specialised in illustration and told my tutors when I attended my interview that I wanted to be an illustrator and they assured me that the course would teach me what I needed. Thankfully university here isn't as expensive as in America but I'm still living on my own and in need of money.

    Anybody who thinks artists are just naturally good at making art, as if it was given to them at birth. Stop, thinking its easy for that person. Odds are they worked their asses off to become that good. They don't need someone saying "meh they're an artist its easy for them..."

    • @Roguestormtrooper
      @Roguestormtrooper 10 років тому +15

      I agree with you completely, but there are times when someone is just, good at drawing things. For example, as a little kid I would draw some crappy stuff with crayons and all, and as I started getting older I basically stopped drawing. Maybe I'd try and doodle something every once and a while and it'd turn out crap and I'd stop caring but, basically I didn't draw. Then, in high school, I fell in love, and at some point I decided I'd try and draw one of her favorite anime characters. While I did spend a fair amount of time on it, it turned out pretty good. From then on I discovered that I'm an OK artist, though I have a lot to learn of course. My dad was the same way, in the sense that he discovered that was pretty good at the start for, no reason. It's not from birth granted, but I didn't have to practice for years to have the ability to make a half decent drawing.

      +Crush9allthetime Nah, some people are just natural gifted in math, some people are gifted to the arts. That's why we have several assessments and psychology exams to see what would be the most preferable career we should do. That's why kids go through hellalot of subjects to see what field he/she would excel.
      Of course they worked their asses to be better at making art, but most likely they've already discovered their affinity to the arts some time ago.

      Something I heard recently was the Talent Coefficient; whereby someone who is more suited to creating art will gain more from an hour of study than someone who is less suited. That is, someone with a talent coefficient of 2.0 is making 2 hours worth of progress in one hour, and someone with a talent coefficient of 0.5 is making 30 minutes worth of progress in one hour.
      That's something I'd never heard before, and it makes a certain amount of sense. I don't like referring to this 'improved ability' as "talent", because I think that misses the core of the issue. "Aptitude" is more accurate. It's about being 'wired' a certain way; thinking in a certain way that just so happens to be attuned to art, of all things.
      Everyone decodes the world around us in different, though similar ways. It is, in fact, the purpose of the 'blotch test' which is commonly associated with psychology to test how a person decodes certain information; if they decode it in a certain way - or if they don't - it may indicative of brain disease.
      I don't mean to say that people who can't do art have some sort of brain disease - or the other way around - I'm simply talking about the way we interpret and think about things. For instance, we have people that have a disposition toward thinking 'outside of the box', or the bigger picture, and people who have a disposition toward thinking about every little detail on a smaller scale.
      To perform at certain activities - say art - then, all we need to do is think about information in a different way, right? Someone who has directed a film will likely think about The Shining differently from someone who has never touched a camera. This is an example of how the brain can be rewired subconsciously. What was once "magic" regresses into something of calculated but equally respectable artistry.
      So, even if there are people who are more 'wired' to certain pursuits than others, it stands to reason that we can still reach them one day, right?

    I've learned from Wikipedia that Andrew Loomis was taught by George Bridgman at the Art Students League of New York (So was Norman Rockwell, Will Eisner, Robert Beverly Hale, and many others for that matter), and also that George Bridgman was taught, in part, by Jean-Léon Gérôme. A while back, since I study Loomis and Bridgman's published work, I researched if Gérôme had ever written a book and I came across this same reprint that he and Bargue had written in the late 19th century. I haven't taken the time to read and study it yet, but now that you've recommended it, I'm going to work through it.

      Thats NOT the only way to learn animation. Do not be confused like that. Animation can be beautiful, and if you don't want to learn it through acting, you don't gotta. Learn the 12 basics of animation instead, Alan Becker did a UA-cam series on them. That's a lot easier. I can guarantee a lot of professional animators had nothing to do with acting.

    Not sure I agree with your thoughts on composition for character design. You say 'you just draw characters side by side' but I think strong character design still leads your eye through the character; the elements still need to be well composed.

    • @toddysims
      @toddysims 9 років тому +4

      I think he just means you don't need as much knowledge for composition if you're a character designer than a landscape artist. Composition is usually the overall look of the image and where things are placed, not the design of a character.

    • @DannyMac3d
      @DannyMac3d 9 років тому +4

      Composition can be defined as "the act of combining parts or elements to form a whole." So whilst composition is usually thought of as the whole framed image (e.g. a character in context) a character designer isn't interested in the whole image they're interested in "combining parts or elements (of design) to form a whole (character)". It's the way composition is usually spoken about that causes confusion I think, but it's actually an important element.

    • @DannyMac3d

      if you think of composition primarily as a tool to lead the eye around the image, "rhythm" is the same thing but around the character. And yes I am thinking about it too much I'm studying character design semiotics for my dissertation :)

    • @crgofficial2187
      @crgofficial2187 5 років тому +1

      I'd say from top to bottom, it's all relatively in order, but I'd learn gesture before anatomy and I'd learn values maybe off the bat or before gesture. For colour, I'd reccomend it to be the final thing you learn, it's very confusing from a beginners perspective if you delve into every theory straight away. Just so you know, even when you become a master, you should still keep excerising your fundamentals, refine your knowledge and implement new strategies, there's always something new to learn :)

    Loving the videos Sycra, they're really helping a tremendous amount.
    I was wondering if you could help me out with this little dilemma I've encountered recently.
    I've recently picked up drawing again as a hobby, (I did about 6 solid months of practice a while back, but kind of let it die after college came around.) and I've been practising with pencil & paper for the entirety of my spare time now, even though my end-goal is to get somewhat decent using a Digital Tablet. I figured what I learn with paper and pencils would be somewhat translatable to a digital tablet.
    My question is; Should I continue practising on paper with pencils and the like, or should I just make the move to tablet and learn to get better at that first?

  • @peterpwn9558
    @peterpwn9558 10 років тому +16

    I think this video may give people an excuse to skip and neglect stuff thinking that it's not relevant for them.
    I get seriously pissed off that everybody just wants to find some sort of shortcut these days. Everything has to be accomplished in the least amount of time.
    How are you supposed to know if you are good or bad at something if you haven't tried it? Try stuff, fail miserably and learn from it!
    I understand what Sycra was trying to explain with this video but I think that shortcut mentality is a huge problem. Especially with digital art. I see a shitload of nicely redered digital paintings online but the figure often look stiff and the anatomy is way off. But nobody cares because it's so nicely rendered -oh! and look at that textured brush he used. wow. People spend too much time polishing turds instead of focusing on the basics.

    • @peterpwn9558
      @peterpwn9558 10 років тому +3

      *****
      If you want a clear path to follow art isn't for you.
      I've never said "master", I just pointed out that people may skip things they don't consider relevant for them when in reality they might benefit from it or even could discover a talent for it.
      I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon so I never really "got lost" because I did it out of enjoyment, not because I had to learn how to draw in one year (this is an arbitrary number I made up to exaggerate and get my point across please don't quote me on it).
      I don't have anything against digital art as long as it's done well but it's the medium where I think it's the easiest to cover up a lack of fundamental skills (to the untrained eye) which is why I brought it up.
      And digital tools are an alternative, not a solution. If you can't solve the problem with a pencil you need to go back to the basics imho

    • @peterpwn9558
      @peterpwn9558 10 років тому

      *****
      What I was trying to say: a clear path to follow is for accountants, not for artists.
      Sure, everybody can be an artist but it takes a long time and dedication to become a great one. Picasso didn't start as an abstract artist and probably didn't even start with that goal in mind. He learned his basics first and then slowly developed a more abstract style.
      There are people who love to draw and there are people who love the idea of being able to draw and there's the difference between excellence and mediocrity.
      All I was criticising is that "as fast as possible mentality". 6 pack abs in 2 weeks, buy it now pay later, become a good artist in a year and so on. I think you should get what I'm trying to say by now.
      Learning how to draw isn't about shortcuts it's about improving over time while enjoying the ride and maybe even finding paths you didn't even know existed.
      I'm sorry if I offended you personally. I did not mean to offend anybody in fact. I just wanted to point out that this video may tempt people to skip basics which may be detrimental to them in the long run.

    • @peterpwn9558
      @peterpwn9558 10 років тому +1

      I get the point you made with your brother but this video isn't geared towards people who casually like to draw but towards aspiring professionals and I don't think a minimalist approach makes sense here.
      In addition to that most jobs he mentions require a "high" skill for most of the fundamentals anyway so I don't quite get why he did that chart in the first place other than to give people said excuse to skip certain basics they might actually profit from.

      The book gives a pretty good indication I think, of when she wants you to repeat an exercise. I also think if you read through the 'post-drawing reading' section and feel like you don't understand or didn't experience anything she talked about, then trying it again or doing some similar exercises is a good thing to do.

    I have a semi-personal question. I'm a high schooler who's been deciding between being a lawyer (probably prosecutor) and an architect. Lately, I've heard Architecture is basically building a building period, and civil engineering is generally better. First, math isn't my strongpoint. Unless I have a decent teacher, I'd fail. Also, I've been taught that I look around a corner in an arguement. But I've been drawing all my life, and it makes me wish I could go with my first idea of a career where I can be an artist. I'm not into being a lawyer, and I'ma decent artist. What occupation should I be?

    • @Lydomina
      @Lydomina 10 років тому +2

      You'd most likely be able to use your learned skills faster as a lawyer than an architect(over 4 years of college+5 years of interning for architect jobs). If you want to be an artist though neither of those will satisfy you, architects aren't artists, they're planners with a pencil and drawing is probably the smallest portion of their job.
