Always photographed me kids in the morning before school because my oldest is autistic and often eloped. I wanted to be SURE I knew what my child was wearing in case somehow managed to slip away from the school... They didn't have locks on their doors... It was awhile ago.

That's a great idea I'm gonna do that, even though we are super locked in here. My child escaped my mom's house a few years ago. I was amazed at my self that I knew exactly what she was wearing to give a police report. Mail man and golfer on golf cart had spotter her running up the middle of the road 1/2 mile away and stopped her. When they called 911 they matched us up quickly a very happy ending. This was in a senior neighborhood not many cars. If she would of ran the other way main highway she definitely had Angel's with her. We homeschool now but 2 years of public school they had to put furniture across doors to keep her in class. Thanks Stacy thanks Pricilla for sharing.

@@sandygeasa9995 wow. That was always my fear being that the highway was about a quarter mile away. I saw another parent post that they took pics of their kids before school so I can't take credit for the idea.

Aw... I love that you guys care so much and work so hard to make sure she knows how to do things. I mean obviously you guys care you're her parents but she is soooo fortunate to have parents like you guys that go above and beyond for her. I love it. I'm not even an emotional person but seeing you guys have such genuine love and care for everyone and everything makes me emotional haha. Sometimes I take for granted the things I'm able to do in life and you guys make me take a step back and remember that I should try to be the best and most helpful to everyone I come across no matter our differences. xoxo sorry if this is weird btw.

Abby is doing so well on her morning routine! Asa and Priscilla you are amazing parents taking the time working with Abby to become more independent, it takes longer getting ready now but eventually she may be able to do these things independently. I always say that the work I am doing with my kids may be the difference between them being fully dependent and semi independent which will be huge in the long run.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was in 4th grade. I have sensory disorder and just diagnosed with bipolar. I can relate the things I went through as a kid to Abbie. She is an amazing young lady!! I love your family! The public school system didn’t do much for me. They told me I was just lazy and I only had ADD nothing was wrong with me I shouldn’t learn any slower than the rest! My parents got me through school, and they taught me how to learn. They constantly fought the school to get me extra help in my classes. Y’all remind me of my parents. Y’all are absolutely amazing!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I'm thankful my lad has a good sense of routine and is able to get himself to and from school, we live a 5-6 min walk away! It has taken him 5yrs to be able to cross the main road without me being there with him but he now understands how the traffic works, and although doesn't like it if he has to stop in the middle to cross the other road (road has a central point so can go half way then stand in safety area then cross the rest of the way when able to) he rather do it in one go.... Anyways, we've lived in this house 5yrs now and it's taken a lot for him to go from me saying when to cross to him being able to! Started of with me talking about the traffic and about the speed they're going at, to when it's safe to cross even if a car is heading down the road towards him, if that car is by the row of parked cars it's safe to cross, if its gone past he has to wait! 5yrs on and he's got it!

I really appreciate how you explain aspects of the routine, such as why Asa does hair and teeth (Asa - you do a really great job giving her neat and pretty ponytails!) while Priscilla helps with meals and other aspects! And I appreciate how you point out where Abbie’s behaviours can be quite similar to expected neurotypical behaviour; such as wanting to scroll social media while eating breakfast, or having a sit on the couch for a moment. Where Abbie might want to spend some time rocking and relaxing, others might spend a moment being on the couch to sip their coffee and reflect on the day ahead. I appreciate how you were able to remind us of that similarity. The cutaways clips were a great idea! Would you consider doing her night routine as well? :) Also, could you do an updated version of trying Abbie’s stims? Thank you so much for the videos and for being brave and open to sharing your family’s story and providing teaching opportunities to others!

awesome video! would love to see a video about her bath routine. now obviously privacy would be a huge factor so if it wouldn't throw abby way off, you could either do bath routine with a bathing suit on? or just a video where you talk and maybe demonstrate what you/she does and how... what steps she goes through and that sort of thing, without actually having her in the bath.
would love to see or hear about that learning process.

  • @ceekay3143

I used to think routines were pretty boring, but they help so much with structure and all the things. Not only in the autism world (though it's especially important in the ASD world), but in the neurotypical world.
E.g. doing the things that are part of your bedtime routine will actually help you fall asleep, you will feel yourself getting sleepy as you do them. Not to mention the ability to put a well-established routine on "autopilot" and have less chance of forgetting an important step like taking your keys out of the car or whatever.
Routines in the form of lesson structure and consistency are meant to help all my students know what to expect during the day. Kids who have trouble with transitions (ASD, ADHD, mental health, anxiety, trauma etc) have fewer behavioural issues and are better able to participate and succeed in lessons. Pretty much all the kids go a little "feral" when there are huge disruptions to their school day, whether it's something positive (award assemblies, excursions etc) or negative (evacuations, fights at lunch etc). Heck, we joke that even the weather or the phase of the moon can set them off.

Hey Priscilla! Makes a nice Change to see You hosting the Video :)
Like all Teenagers, Abbie really does not like being Woken Up!
Lols, resisting being Woken up in any way Possible, Including putting Her head under the Blanket in the hope it might make Dad "Go away" .
Its nice to See Abbie actually Sleeping well :)
As much as I *Love* a Bath, we don't have a Tub at Home as Our Bathroom is really Small (yours is almost as big as Our whole Second Floor!) , so I have to wait until I go on Vacation to get a Bath.
I am Glad that Abbie is getting really good at Self Care and Hygiene Skills, She is getting Particularly Good at Brushing Her Teeth I See :)
Indeed, Schedules and Routines are very Important, as they Prevent Meltdowns. I have lost track of How many Routines I have now.
Indeed, Abbie is making *incredible* Progress :)
Yup, the Routine has to be the Same, Day in, Day out, without change, or we just cannot cope with the World. its a Shame, but, that's life with Autism I am afraid.
I am not allowed Gadgets or Books at the Table, I *Do* have to have the TV on However when I Eat at the Table. I am Seriously into the old "Supermarionation" Series made by Gerry Anderson back in the 1960's again, you know, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90, etc, as I grew up watching the Re-Runs in the Early 1990s (I am talking around '90/'91 here) on CITV, and I have recently Rediscovered that part of My Childhood again, so I tend to watch an Episode or 2 (Thunderbirds Episodes were a full Hour, all the others were 30 Minutes an Episode) while I am Eating :)
its lovely that You keep in Contact with Summer with Pictures of Abbie, and its even Lovelier that Grandma gets a Picture of Abbie every single Day.
Abbie is quite the Little Model at Times :)
Indeed, Abbie takes Her time with getting Ready! good thing the School understands about "Abbie Time" which seems to be only Second to "Valve Time" in how...slow...it is!
See You all Soon Guys! take Care :)

Love this video. I’m the same way in the morning. I have to have my time for 20-30 minutes in bed watching UA-cam and I Love to eat my cereal with my phone and/or tablet on UA-cam. If I’m eating with everyone else that morning because I have time or it’s the weekend, I will play with my mom’s iPad and watch amazon prime or UA-cam or something like that while I wait for breakfast. Much like Abby I have a routine for day and night myself. I also like to have a cookie at night nowadays since grandma started baking them more often. Can’t forget my milk. I also like UA-cam or amazon prime during my cookie time.

Do you have her routine up so she can see it visually or does she just know it? My 6.5 year old has high functioning autism and we’ve been recommended to try a routine with him but I’m worried he’ll become too controlling over it and too rigid to not allow any flexibility or change. Also do I do one for his 4 year old NT sister so it doesn’t seem like it’s just him that has to have one?

I have a question, does Abbie dislike having her teeth brushed??
I ask because I have ASD and Sensory Processing Disorder and I wasn't diagnosed till I was older but when I was a kid I HATED brushing my teeth. I brushed them of course (I'm compulsively hygienic) but dear gosh I always hated the feeling of the brush rubbing against my teeth and never knew how to explain it

Every time I’m having my bed time snack I always have my phone at the table always looking at Instagram pics and vids while I wait for my cereal to go soggy cause I like it soggy.

Interesting to see the routine. If you don't mind my asking... Have you tried a picture schedule with Abby to see if she will respond to it (sort of a first then sort of thing)?

She looks like she likes mornings about as much as I do. lol When I was in school I used to do the same thing with covering my head up. My daughter did it too. lol My Mom was smart though. She got me up ten minutes earlier then she needed to so I could lay there and feel like I was getting away with something. My daughter did the same thing but we were always late because I forgot to get her up early lol. Neither one of us are morning people to this day. lol
