I lost a friend this week. My Jamaican brother called Richie. I would go on holiday in 2013, I stayed in negril and met Richie. Our friendship was immediately recognised by us both. I would return to Jamaica once if not twice a year since then to see Richie, he would show me a side of Jamaica that tourists do not see, from driving with no license and insurance and tax, rubbing lucky oil in our skin. Or sitting in the hills smoking to introducing me to a grower called Tupac in orange hills. We really bonded and I would tell him that I would come back each time with more to offer. The goal was to buy a property and let Richie live there. This song was on repeat one time for a while and it’s my best memories summed up in this song. I didn’t have the chance to say goodbye as he was shot early hours of the morning, he carried fire arms and I always acknowledged them , yet didn’t see why they needed them. When leaving Richie he would always say be safe and look after yourself. Be safe, I always questioned the safe part and told him it is you that needs to be safe and look after yourself, maintain what you have and I will be back to add to whatever it is you are doing, money , phones clothes and food were always something I did for him, in return he would introduce me to mothers, fathers, uncles, aunties, friends. We would spend days in the hills and smoke weed to we couldn’t see no more, or the light went. Thank you Richie for everything, you were my brother and I will always remember you for being optimistic when being optimistic was so difficult. Rest in peace mi general. I will return and do what I can for your daughters.
