For those having the problem where the file keeps converting to another MKV file, the fix is to rename the file so that '.mkv' is not in the file name. So the part at 3:40 in the video - make sure that you are not keeping the same file name (delete '.mkv' from the file name) so that the VLC program corrects your file to a '.mp4'
There is nothing that I love more than a simple instruction video! Looking online there are tons of options to convert but nothing points to VLC. I always forget how useful VLC is, and the crazy thing is I used OBS to actually record this video but since it was my first time I didn't spend the time learning it to see that it actually can do this same thing. With you adding that information at the end, now I know! And knowing is half the battle! Thanks so much for the videos. Saved me a lot of time. I recorded an 8-hour video that I need to edit parts out and it was recorded in MKV.
Video for UA-cam HD will downgrade a 1080 video to 720. HOWEVER, I noticed there's a setting that says MPEG 4 1080p TV/device. THAT WORKED! Just a little tip.....

How do you select different audio tracks when exporting? I have an mkv with more than one audio track and when it gets exported as an mp4, it comes out mute.
I followed instructions on here, but I repeatedly had a problem where the first few seconds of video on the MKV was lost. The audio made it through, but the video only picked up about 6 seconds in. I tried a couple different MP4 codecs and got identical results.
same here. did you find a solution? I tested and chose H.265 + MP3 (MP4) instead of the first MP4 choice. It fixed the issue of the first few seconds being lost but the file size was substantially smaller
I have an issue with this. Mine does this weird thing where, in VLC it plays the converted file as audio, unless I scrub the time line. If I play it in Media Player, it plays it as video and not audio.
I did it but if i convert with the First option for mp4 : the vlc doesnt start it; Then if i convert with the second one : the video starts but the audio is not the same as the Labial Why?

Thank you for the easy tutorial! I'm an OBS noob, and had no idea I needed to do something to make it record as MP4 instead of MKV! You just saved me $80 from buying a converter! 🙌🏻😊
I have been successfully converting files from mkv to mp4 but for some days it is giving an error OVERWRITE or KEEP EXISTING FILES and then it doesn't restart. I clicked on keep existing file then nothing happened and when I clicked OVERWRITE then it restarts again.
Excellent clarity and sensible speed of demonstration. Too often the help videos are recorded with lightning speed and it's impossible to follow the sequence comfortably. So, well done
its not work after convert by vlc file has loose his property only 199 bytes when i chose video for youtube. and when i choose h-264 mp3 (mp4) after convert when i play it its only audio not support video.
Okay! This method worked. Trying to use the actual h264 setting only rendered a 164kb file. The only issue I have is the UA-cam HD profile downgraded my 1080 vid to 720. I want to keep the 1080 resolution.
Ahhhhh I have a MacBook and rather than "convert/save" it says "convert/stream". When I try to convert the mkv to mp4, it converts the file but with no audio. Any tips?
My problem is that I have external hard drives with video recordings from my (now defunct) samsung tv that won't play on my laptop because apparently they're in some dodgy encrypted format and I need them.
when i saw this its already been 2 years since its been uploaded (2023) just want to say thankyou. because its been 2 days me trying to find a software that would let me convert my mkv vid without paying. unfortunately cant do it online since the file size is 5 gb ( recorded a full game ( little misfortune (very much recommend it))) thankyou

Thanks man appreciate the tip, it's a 20 year old VHS recording that EZcap saved as mkv and I need to get it into Premiere to get rid of the dead space at the top and bottom. cheers 👍🏾
what are some other reasons for doing this? I have tried ALL of those metadata suggestions ($f and $u) to get my VLC player to stop changing my video file titles BACK to their metadata titles after they get clicked on/played, and nothing has worked. Could this be the answer I wonder? I love VLC, but this issue is slowly driving me to look for different video player options... which is sad... VLC has made their player endlessly complex... one would think they could code in a simple fix for this problem (and there are A LOT of people who inevitably run into this annoying issue).
I had no idea that VLC, a media player I use a tonne could do this :) I don't usually comment and am just a passive observer. But this saved me so much hassle with file conversion. Thank you so much ^_^
i've been waiting on my conversion for like an hour now or something and when i check the file properties it says it's at 0 bytes :( would this be file size related?

Many thanks for the clear tutorial. Any thoughts on why my recently taken vids are much smaller than the older ones (I'm talking 4900kb vs 160000kb) Also the smaller files only play audio in Windows media player? Any help would be appreciated. Keep it up, thanks again.
Hello! i used vlc for converting the video but the quality of the files really decreased a lot after converting. do you know if thats possible to keep the quality through the VLC and how? thanks in advance
May I ask? What's the difference between changing the extension name (like changing xxx.mkv to xxx.mp4) and using VLC itself (just like your tutorial video)...is there any major change or what?
If you still want to know basically if you tried to open what you did(changing the name) on a non suported .mkv player it wont be playable u just basically change on what application wich will run the that file
Anywhere from 10 seconds and up. If it's a short clip it'll be fast if it's a longer clip it could be 10 minutes. It all depends on how big your file is and the speed of your computer.
