i know i am peasant dressed as a princess...but that doesnt mean you have to take my clothes away. If theres a method to writing a song, how come im getting it wrong...Chrissie Hynde gets it right all the time and for many, many years....how funny that she would put that in a song.. She is the BEST!!
The man carrying the child on his shoulders at 1:51 is my grandfather, Alden Harriman. Served his country, served his community and was well known and loved in Cape Porpoise, Maine. Just wanted to give him his dues. :)
@@marctozie1092 Just saw your posts from today and yesterday. I am indeed Dee Dee. :-) It's nice that someone remembers me! :-) I've never been close to my mother and haven't seen the family in decades...I moved out of state when I was 20 and have lived out of state since then. I remember you, I think! from the pond up in Gray? Didn't you used to stay in the A-frame cabin? Wow, how cool is this?!
My favorite song by the amazing Chrissie Hynde & Thr Pretenders! How I wore this out on a 45! What a beautiful song & video..just shimmers & sparkles with exuberance & joy, especially the live part..and I just love the lyrics & musicianship from the band.
Chrissie inspired me to start my own band...which became an all girlie... band...but putting out ad's I got one of the best chick drummers in Holland...amd we covered Brass in pocket whereby I was told to sing it just like Chrissie! my biggest compliment ever!!!! Keep on Rocking ye all
Awesome story! Chrissie is one of my vocal inspirations. I try to tackle her songs with my guitar & singing, and it's so beautiful. One of my favorite singers. Hope you've had much success, and more importantly, loads of fun & joy.
1st pretenders concert : san diego.. get close tour. packed house - 'don't get me wrong' was a smash. show opened with 'room full of mirrors.' electrifying.
So brilliant. MEL GAYNOR ON DRUMS!!!! Oh how every snare hit is just perfecto! Haircut 100s drummer, Blair Cunningham toured on this and in the vid, great drummer as well! Most importantly though: the bass player's HAIR! That's the one and only T.M. Stevens 80s LOOK TO DIE FOR!
That clever rhythm part in the song confused him. I'd rather have a quality Latte with the Pretenders, than a bad Maxwell House dirt sourced "coffee" and a third rate band full of pretenders that could never come close to being the Pretenders.
Oh boy... dig yourself a hole if it's so bad today ! How I hate this eternal cant "in-the-good-ole-days-everything-was-so-much-better"-style. Take this (from a James Taylor song): "The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time" !
Chrissie writes great songs, yet hardly gets covered. I'd like to see this song, Brass In Pocket, Kid, Talk of the Town and a good, at least, 20 other superbly written songs of hers covered by talented stars. Ok, maybe someday! In the meantime, the originals are so great, I'll just spin them again.
I love this video and the music . This was about the time Chrissie was on her own except for her second guitar player, at least in this video, after Honeyman died. who was the drummer, keyboard player and bassist ? the keyboard part near the last third of the song, is beautiful , starting about 2:28 . also wonder where was the locations this was shot at ?
on of The Pretenders most under-rated songs...
One of their best
+1. Strongly agree.
This is one time when SHE wrote the beautiful song. One of my all-time favorites.
Why do you say "one time"? Hasn't she written most of their beautiful & great songs?
Love love love how deep this woman goes with her lyrics, delivery, presence and talent.
Underrated song. Underrated record.

Oh, Chrissie, I do love you; you’re the ultimate rocker, and no one can combine toughness and vulnerability like you!

This woman is amazing. Simply amazing. She wrecks me.

I absolutely love Chrissie Hynde. I adore her. And this is one of the best songs, EVER.
not one of their most famous but one my all time favorite songs........chrissie...one of kind....

She is the best thing that ever came out of Cleveland Great voice, great band, great music.

RIP Thomas Michael Stevens July 28, 1951 - March 10, 2024 ✌🧡
She is the best!!!! The Pretenders rock still to this day!!
Like i said before.there is nobody that tops her.that voice is so refreshing to hear.
So brilliant. MEL GAYNOR ON DRUMS!!!! Oh how every snare hit is just perfecto!

Love this song cranked up in the car! The sparking Tele brings tears to my eyes everytime...
One of the best, ever.
Like?! Where's the LOVE button????
Inexplicably didn't hit the US top 40 but did his #1 on the US mainstream Rock tracks chart. One of their best songs.
1:57 love when the sunlight refeflects off Chrissie's guitar onto her smiling fellow band members. So beautiful and meaningful!
"That to me would be success"
Great song fab vocals as always and a creative video sunlight shining of quiter stunning effect . Such a superb group .
love the drums on this
Like walking on stage...
Like a light magical breeze that wafts into you and illuminates the soul-Chryssie was meant to do this. The epitome of the classy rock-chick artist.
This is one of the best ...enough said.
this songs is about her daughter, Natalie whose father was Ray Davies of the Kinks
Love this song! My friend Michele once likened this video to a Maxwell House commercial. I peed myself on the spot!
That clever rhythm part in the song confused him. I'd rather have a quality Latte with the Pretenders, than a bad Maxwell House dirt sourced "coffee" and a third rate band full of pretenders that could never come close to being the Pretenders.
Great song, great vocals, arrangement and originality - what more can you say about a tremendous Canadian band.
Lol, yeah.
Canadian band?
great song thanks for posting .
Play this loud, no f it, break the dang speakers!! Just a great song, god!!!
LOVE!!!!!
I think she wrote this for one of her ex's, either Jim Kerr or Ray Davies.
Love You Chrissie Baby!!
Wow 26 years later, and it's still an MTV exclusive!
I think the song and the album are great!
First time watching the video (that I can recall). Always thought this was Simple Minds with Chrissie. This tune still Rocks!!!
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!! MTV Exclusive
can"t go back but this is close

@MsDennery Wouldn't you love to hear Stevie Nicks cover this song? Duet?

You cut off the first few seconds -- critical to the song's beauty!
EPIC....
She has the cool of a female Keith Richard
@cosmicrider287 Best part of the song!
What was Ray Davies Thinking?? This was a Date Up Catch!
@MsDennery I'll request both on their websites for starters...Both of them cherish their privacy.
Saw them on this tour. I think she fired half the band not too long after. I could see her giving on-stage directions - like WTF are you doing.

@polymath1944 Entirely British band except for Akron, Ohio, USA born but UK transplant and now Brit, Chrissie.
yeah ..
Crissy should have done Ronnie's song be my littel baby would have Ben great
who were the black musicians on this this....they kicked ass , she should have kept them in the band.
Enjoy your retirement Chrissie Hines .
Always actually liked this one more than Don't Get Me Wrong. Wasn't nearly as big a hit, though...…………………….go figure.
great song but very bad sound
Re: Favorites
meh
This song sucks. Man, the Pretenders used to be so great. But by the time this album came out, they'd completely jumped the shark.
Great song, and as someone above said, one of their most underrated.
"..I know that i'm a peasant dressed as a princess, that doesn't mean you have to take my clothes away..."...love chrissie..she is simply 'bad ass"..
