I tried a training session at Petco, and the trainer told me to hold my puppy to my side with tension on the leash and walk around the store… ive tried it for months and it didn’t do a thing. Thank you for uploading this and making dog owners better handle their dogs!
This method has worked the best of any I have tried. The only thing I wish you mentioned, which SHOULD be common sense, is that the force of the correction is not the same for all dogs. Meaning the amount of force you used for that rottweiler is more than you would need for a Chihuahua. But the same method applies.
Amazing video. Super firm and clear direction- thanks for the no-fluff instruction!! I have a 5 month old mutt who is doing great on walks- but want to ensure we’re setting the best foundation possible as she is growing FAST.
Good lesson. You got a sub out of me. One very important word of advice, don't switch sides of the leash over your head. That's how I got a rotator cuff tear on my shoulder, when he took off while my arm was over my head. My Rocky was 85 lbs. Not too reactive, but that time, he was quick.
I’ve done multiple videos on my loose leash walking method, most within the last month. Check them all out to give you the whole picture before your walk tomorrow. Good luck.
My golden used to drag me behind him on his walks. I applied this method two days ago and now our walks are so relaxed on a loose leash. I give him plenty of time to sniff and when I ask him to come he follows me. We now walk longer than before and I’m not drained out and frustrated at the end. So thank you 🙏🏼
Less frustration and you'll love your dog more, want to go on more walks, and enjoy spending more time with your dog. Your dog won't hate you for correcting them. You're building a stronger bond and mutual respect, and your dog will love you more for it. So many people don't spend the time showing their dogs the rules and end up having a nuisance for 15 years. You showed your dog how to walk civilized for a lifetime, in 2 days. Love it!
I have a 2 year old girl who we have struggled with training how to walk on a leash. I have been sharing your videos with my partner and we really like your method. This dog resembles how our Macy acts the most, and we will now make this part of our routine. I just recently got her to sit outside which is an improvement as she would only do that indoors before, but we need to get her focused on us. I like your training a lot because it doesn't involve treats, and the outside world and all its distractions are better to her than a treat.
Still amazing, this guy uses normal collar and his techique is perfect, i'm sure he could even walk an Aabai and a Kangal and teach something to the people who needs someone else to pull back these dogs and still struggle. I struggled with mine and had the intuition that i should change direction cause i was tired of his pulling, we was walking me litterally, however, it was not perfect because i didn't give the gentle pops, he used to walk next to me and had more tendency to try to walk me again, thank's to this guy he mostly walks behind me, other times next to me and then if he tries again i change. Thank's for sharing
Thanks for these. I've been watching your channel for a few days now a have learned so much. I have a four year old Labradoodle that pulls ALL THE TIME. I'll def give these a try.
I found your channel through a search on loose leash walking. Thank you for making it, so many others tell you "this is how it's done" and show nothing. Your channel is a gift. I have been binge watching the leash videos. I live on a crazy busy street so I have to take my dog in the car before we can go on a walk in a park with trails.. As soon as his feet hit the ground he wants to take off, should I at that point guild him back into the car and try again until he gets it? Thank you again.
Some dogs learn so fast. He got there pretty quick. He’s a Rottweiler. I did it on one walk with an Australian shepherd. He gave in super fast with verbal ques
I will be trying this with my lab mix tomorrow. Once our door opens she instantly run for dear life. That's just the door threshold., which has stopped me from taking her on walks. She is only 46 lbs but strong as heck. 🥴 Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Id like to see that too. Also, I didn't see much praise. Is it something you want to ignore? You talked about treats....you also didn't use any. Thanks for the videos
@@AbnerSolano the treat or reward is being able to continue the walk. So……the dog walks ahead……leash correction…..dog stops and CHECKS IN with Joel……the walk then continues.
He does proactive stops during the walk, has a few videos where reactive dogs meet on a walk and he does it all without the use of any aversive tools. He's actually helping people in countries where those tools have been outlawed. He also has little dog videos and puppies on walks if you don't have a 110lb Rottweiler. Hope that helps.
I had to get a vibration collar. It took 4 times buzzing him. It was a waste of money…it trained him immediately! He knew when I pulled the remote out..not to move! There was no shock involved! Just vibration. It’s an amazing collar! EDIT: He learned the buzz…it doesn’t have any motivation anymore…he’s like …that’s all you got?
i have 4 big dogs all male and neutered getting ready for walks is a nightmare so j get harnesses on and make them wait till they calm down then i get the leashes and have to put 2 in a room while i take the other 2 out and run out the door and the gate. yeah there is just so much i would make this a novel lol but i love these videos i have learned so much
I have a Dutch Shepard and when I take him to the park he will pull at the end of the lead. I give him a correction and walk all the way back and he will perfect heel. I praise him and turn back to go to the park again and he'll be at the end of the lead again. I keep repeating it and every time on the way back he perfectly heels. It's kind of funny but very frustrating. He obviously knows how to heel! He's also very under socialised. I got him when he was 6 months old (now 2 years old) and that is the time when covid started and the country locked down. He does have a very good male dog friend a French bulldog. They will play and smell each other etc but any other dogs come near and he's like a wild thing at the end of the lead. I've been trying for a year and a half to stop this behaviour. When he first met my friends Frenchie he reacted like that too for about 5 minutes and after a couple of walks they're best friends. Other dog owners just see a vicious dog barking at their little yapping dogs and think the worse. I wish you were in the UK but your video's are very helpful. One day I hope to have a well behaved dog. I'll be getting him neutered once things go back to normal in the hopes that will help too.
The frustrating part of all this is to not be able to find a trainer like this in my area. The videos are very helpful, but still feel I need hands-on instruction to help my dogs live up to their potential.
I have been using this and have had tremendous success with the same. The only question I had is : Would extensive correction have a bruising effect on the dog's neck? My vet told me they have their thyroid gland right where the collar is and that gets damaged pretty bad in leash pulling situations. Love the work by the way , You've literally saved my dog from flying through the door and crashing into a vehicle.
He also has several videos with the front correcting harnesses and a gentle leader. But really, even with this Rottweiler, he's not pulling anymore. Had an instructor who spent an entire week in the driveway going back and forth with a cigar of string cheese hanging out of her mouth. The neighbors were even laughing at her. Guess what - they're not laughing anymore because she can take the Rottweiler anywhere and he never wants to leave her side. You're not going anywhere until they can do it in the house, the back yard, the driveway, etc. Our students practice the doorway method in the inside doors - bathrooms, bedrooms, etc before attempting an outside door. And if you notice, he never has any self releasing dogs. Using their release word consistently makes it clear to the dog when they can move or stop doing what you asked. Hope that helps.
I once tried the method of “turn around and go the opposite direction when your dog pulls”. I got so dizzy from constantly doing 180s that we had to go home. LOL
Hey Joel! Just recently discovered your channel doing some UA-cam research to learn some things about dogs! I found you and every day I have been watching a little bit! My brother was in another city and came back and lives with us for now, he has a 1y 7months girl Labrador and I have a 4yr mixed race medium size (13kg). They are now used to each other but he still is afraid even tho she just wants to play. I saw this video and I see that the dog is calm once you start the walk. In my case when I want to go with the Labrador she is so pumped up on energy that the corrections have little effect. How can I make her lose some of the energy once she knows that we are going for a walk? So she has a calmer mind to teach. I think that she will do a sit/stay but the energy will still be there. Sorry for the long question/story! Thanks!
He has a calming loop video from years ago. Sometimes a 5 min game of retrieve before the walk helps take the edge off. Susan Garrett has one of the best retrieve videos on UA-cam. Hope that helps.
Great video. I’m really appreciating your training methods! Need some advise on my barking 5 month old Cane Corso. Obviously a guard dog breed and goes off like a firecracker when people approach our house and camp site for example. We know it’s unfair to expect to stifle the barking completely as it’s in her genes. But we should be able to “turn her off” and let her know that we’ll take it from here. Any advice on how to do this?
@@BDTraining Upon barking, We have been saying “ok, now LEAVE IT” then try to reward with a treat when she stops. This is effective at times. But she can get so engaged at times that it’s like she doesn’t even hear us. We’re just trying nip this behaviour while she is still young (5 months). Ive even purchased a vibrating collar to possibly incorporate after two “Leave it” commands. But just haven’t had the heart to use. Hoping that perhaps this reward approach for her calming down after a “leave it“ command may be the way to go. Just wanted to see if you agree with this or had other ideas. Thanks so much.
@@claytonschmidt290you want to practice away from in the moment. Like practice in the house, on leash, with objects that she shouldn't have - paper towels, shoe, garbage can , etc. She has the whole leash but you're telling her leave it (only one time) far enough away that she can't reach the object - otherwise she's just getting rewarded for it. We don't use a leash correction, you're just waiting until she actually does leave it and reward her decision - such a smart girl! Peach on a Leash has a great shortz video of a full grown GSD dropping a hot dog from his mouth. Yes, a bit different because they already got the object but might help too. Eventually you won't need treats, but you practice ahead of time when they don't have anything in their mouth to drop. Hope that helps.
Wow smart Rottweiler, my Rottweiler is 10 months old full of energy and if I try to do this method I'm immediately dragging on my belly down the street
I’m just a little skeptical of the real world application of this technique….I can see how it would work great on a dog who has already been well-exercised and is already a little tired. (That cute rottie certainly looks like he’s been well worn out from earlier exercise). It’s fine for folks who have a big fenced in yard where you can run around, play fetch, and generally wear your dog out prior to loose leash training. I just wonder about folks who don’t have that option. Definitely a good training concept. And yes, I do worry about all that constant yanking on the neck. I use an ez walk harness….Have trained 3 pups for local service dog org…..Let me know what I don’t understand….I’m sure someone will☺️
First…..there is NOT “constant yanking on the neck”. It’s a short flick/snap……like a tap on the shoulder to say “Oi are you forgetting something” Second…….it absolutely works on an out of control over enthusiastic bouncy dog…….just takes a tad longer…..so as Joel says “could do it all day” until he gets it.
Yes I'm wrong but not no more my rottveiler is bigger than this one but you are right and it has made me a better owner kizar likes your voice he listens to all your vids its amusing 😄it shows you know yer job is it majik🤣🤣🤣🤣😉
Man, that's the best method. Do you think that I could do this with two dogs at the same time? I have a golden retriever and a boxer and I usually walk them together, but if it will be more effective I could walk them separately. Also I use a 5 feet leash, do you think a longer leash would be more effective? Thanks so much.
Hello, I have a 4 month old Rottie. I notice your dog doesn’t have a choke chain on. What do you recommend for puppies as far as training on the leash and walking. At the moment I use a harness and my pup tends to pull on the leash with her mouth. Thanks!
Joel doesn't use aversive tools. Choke chains can cause severe tracheal damage. My one dog has a collapsing trachea. If your harness attaches at the back, they usually just encourage pulling. I walk my two 100 lb Dobes on a front correcting harness and 2 fingers. Joel also has some front correcting harness videos and gentle leader videos. My stepdaughter has a Rottweiler and even I had trouble with a regular collar. I told her to just try the front correcting harness. She was amazed. The dog wanted to stay right by her side. Amazing! Hope that helps.
I have 2 dogs at home, can i train them both together with this method at the same time (with a leash for each dog of course) so it wont be time consuming?
Our weimaraner is 30x more excitable than this dog. Tried this for a solid hour 4-5 different occasions and it hasnt worked. Any other advice you can give? Wish you were in Florida?
Do it the same way as walking through a door/gate. Dog doesn’t move on to that staircase until you have stepped on first. In this case though you need to make the correction as soon as he/she moves to the next step BEFORE you do. Dog stops…..you turn and go back up a step or two…..or the whole way……turn around and start again. For the stairs it is safest for you to be same step at a time or the dog one step back.
My dog doesn't like the leash & has been approached by growling dogs so she doesn't want to go for walks. So when she sees the leash she stays away from me. Any advice?
Do you have an example where multiple dogs and multiple handlers are walking together and the last dog keeps trying to leave even after correction? I assume the same method would apply but I as the handler would need to break away from that pack to teach the dog to not "chase" the front of the pack?

You're a master. I'm applying your methods these days. I love your attitude hahaha
“You’ll stay here forever” need that logo when the shirts drop
Saw this video had to look at it because I’m getting a Rottweiler puppy in a couple of weeks very helpful and you corrected his behavior 👍
you have the puppy now? how is it going? getting my own rott puppy in like 6 weeks
This is a GameChanger I am so glad I found your videos.
Thanks for these. I've been watching your channel for a few days now a have learned so much. I have a four year old Labradoodle that pulls ALL THE TIME. I'll def give these a try.
That Rottie did well for his 1st session
I found your channel through a search on loose leash walking. Thank you for making it, so many others tell you "this is how it's done" and show nothing. Your channel is a gift.
I have been binge watching the leash videos. I live on a crazy busy street so I have to take my dog in the car before we can go on a walk in a park with trails.. As soon as his feet hit the ground he wants to take off, should I at that point guild him back into the car and try again until he gets it?
Thank you again.
Good job. Really informative video . Beautiful Rottie.
Agree!
Some dogs learn so fast. He got there pretty quick. He’s a Rottweiler. I did it on one walk with an Australian shepherd. He gave in super fast with verbal ques
I really like the way you teach !
Thank you !
I will be trying this with my lab mix tomorrow. Once our door opens she instantly run for dear life. That's just the door threshold., which has stopped me from taking her on walks. She is only 46 lbs but strong as heck. 🥴 Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Super helpful video, thanks Joel! Would be curious to see how you increase criteria as you progress.
This technique works very well.
can we start this method in our 2 month puppy? is it better to put the lines from now or it has to be a bit free for now? perfect video thanks.
7:43 One of Joel's favorite words.
BINK. 😂😂😂😂
What a good dog.
We need an “I’ll do this all day”-T-shirt 😂
Such great insight here!
i have 4 big dogs all male and neutered getting ready for walks is a nightmare so j get harnesses on and make them wait till they calm down then i get the leashes and have to put 2 in a room while i take the other 2 out and run out the door and the gate. yeah there is just so much i would make this a novel lol but i love these videos i have learned so much
Thank you. Excellent.
Nice work! i already had a lot of progress thanks to you. Did you tire him out before this video?
The frustrating part of all this is to not be able to find a trainer like this in my area. The videos are very helpful, but still feel I need hands-on instruction to help my dogs live up to their potential.
I believe that he does video training. You might give him a call and ask if he gives video training. It wouldn’t hurt.
Ich finde deine Methode sehr gut gut. Habe es umgesetzt und der Anfang ist gut gelungen. 👍👍👍
That’s what I’ve been forgetting to do! Walk the other way after the correction!!
Some dogs also like pattern games, like 1,2,3 sit. 1, 2, 3 sit.
Great stuff 👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastic
Sound is a bit quiet on this one but still an awesome session.
Excellent stuff
Great video. I’m really appreciating your training methods!
Need some advise on my barking 5 month old Cane Corso.
Obviously a guard dog breed and goes off like a firecracker when people approach our house and camp site for example. We know it’s unfair to expect to stifle the barking completely as it’s in her genes. But we should be able to “turn her off” and let her know that we’ll take it from here. Any advice on how to do this?
That exactly right right, you need to let her know “you’ll take it from here”. Think through what that process would look like. Get back to me.
@Clayton Schmidt I saw a video he did about a week ago called Barking Quick Fix that might help.
Thank you Sir
Good dog!
It’s a short flick/snap……like a tap on the shoulder to say “Oi are you forgetting something”
Second…….it absolutely works on an out of control over enthusiastic bouncy dog…….just takes a tad longer…..so as Joel says “could do it all day” until he gets it.
Yes I'm wrong but not no more my rottveiler is bigger than this one but you are right and it has made me a better owner kizar likes your voice he listens to all your vids its amusing 😄it shows you know yer job is it majik🤣🤣🤣🤣😉
Awesome!!
I usually keep a raw steak in my pocket but this method is cleaner and safer💁♂️
Will this work with a 4.5month old puppy? My baby is so crazy when I try to walk her.
Joel has several videos for puppies and small dogs. You might want to check those out.
I had to walk mine separately until they each got the hang of it. Easier on all of us.
What a fun combo of dogs! How do the breeds interact. I have a boxer and the energy level is so high. Does the Golden react well to it?
Joe has a video on this exact situation. Walking two dogs at the same time. Subscribing helps locate videos. 👍
Looooved your video ❤
Amazing !👏🏼
yr awsm
This works thanks
Don’t be lazy. Each dog needs to have individual training sessions in everything.
I'm also seeing progress the day after from just one walk
Will this work with a no pull harness? I do not want hurt my dogs neck by pulling on his collar.
Merci!
How old must the dog be to do this? Mine is 7 months. Alaska Husky.
This works.
Our weimaraner is 30x more excitable than this dog. Tried this for a solid hour 4-5 different occasions and it hasnt worked. Any other advice you can give? Wish you were in Florida?
Does the types of collar help? I have a harness on my pups and it doesn’t seem to work they still pull pull pull like sled dogs 🥴
rotties are smart
Does this work the same if the dog is on a harness instead of a regular neck collar?
Awesemness!
Im in an apartment and the first huge challenge is getting down the stairs without both of us breaking our necks. Any tips?
Do it the same way as walking through a door/gate. Dog doesn’t move on to that staircase until you have stepped on first. In this case though you need to make the correction as soon as he/she moves to the next step BEFORE you do. Dog stops…..you turn and go back up a step or two…..or the whole way……turn around and start again. For the stairs it is safest for you to be same step at a time or the dog one step back.
My dog doesn't like the leash & has been approached by growling dogs so she doesn't want to go for walks. So when she sees the leash she stays away from me. Any advice?
My dog is 1 year old. could it be age thats causing my dog to be super difficult when leash walking?
Do you have an example where multiple dogs and multiple handlers are walking together and the last dog keeps trying to leave even after correction? I assume the same method would apply but I as the handler would need to break away from that pack to teach the dog to not "chase" the front of the pack?
If there are multiple dogs and multiple handlers then each handler needs to do the training with the dog they are handling.
I notice when you give leash correction, you lower your hands and body before tugging. How come?
So that he can make sure to pull ACROSS his body in line with the dogs collar so that it isn’t a pull upwards.
Will this work with a scent driven dog?
My dog sits waits for the door to be completely opened waits for me to come with him. He still pulls.
