This is a neat 4-part tune called Hangman's reel, loads of fun to play. I filmed this on my grandparent's back porch in Kentucky, hence the loud buzzing of bugs in the background. Hopefully they added some nice ambiance and weren't too distracting haha. Banjo is in G tuning.
I dunno. A few people have threatened to kill me if I didn't stop playing the banjo.
Someone once said that the definition of a gentleman is a man who knows how to play the accordion - but doesn't.
I lived on a tiny sailboat in a marina once. I decided to learn to play the harmonica. After about three days a delegation of my neighbors came to me and said that if I didn't quit playing the harmonica they were going to tow me and my boat out into the harbor and set us on fire.
Keep one for playing and one for the fightin
I was learning the flute in a Mexican tourist town. I wanted to learn how to play the upper octave. You have to learn to blow a certain way, by trial and error. I went out on the beach. After a while someone called me over to their hotel room. Uh oh. They said, "Oh thank you. That's so beautiful!" I thought, that never happened with the electric bass.
I was denied entrance to an event once as they deemed my banjo a “weapon”. The term murder banjo was born. Now it’s a lifestyle. Lol
How do you cheat death? By embracing life. That's what the banjo's for.

I've been scheduled to be executed by hanging later tonight so thanks this should come in handy! I'll start practicing now

I cheated death with nothing but Medicare. I would have preferred using a banjo, but that was not an option at the time.
Just a thought - maybe consider touring with Leanna Firestone? She's from Tennessee, sings about life experiences from the heart, and my daughter thinks she's pretty awesome.
It is good to see someone play authentic clawhammer. Today, so many UA-camrs are playing whatever style and labelling it clawhammer for clicks.

Well done, Phoebe!!! The people would never want to hang anyone who plays like You! I enjoyed the notable increase in tempo. Usually, we would play the A and B parts through twice, then speed up a little, and repeat until we couldn’t play faster, or the dancers couldn’t dance. We called Hanged Man’s Reel “the Joke on the Dancer.”
Ms. Pheobe, Your skill on the banjo is getting considerable. My best friend is a fantastic guitar player & I told him he is blessed, but he stopped me & said, Thank you, but I have practiced 4, 6 & 8 hour days to play like I do. Thus, I respect the amount of time you have committed to playing. Those hand hewn logs on your grand-parents home are gorgeous!!! Hope the fall is treating you well...
This is how you tell the difference between a God-given gift and a developed talent. A Gift happens perfectly without development, and is re-creatable just as effectively. Peter on the Day of Pentacost is an example. In the Gospels, every time he opened his mouth, he stuck his foot in it. But, on Pentacost, no one was more eloquent.
@@erniemiller1953Yes about Peter, but in the case of music, I believe that God has given this gift to all of us. With some it takes less time and effort to pull out than others, but even prodigies need to work at their musicianship so that they can improve.

Can you talk about each banjo before playing so we, your audience can understand what kind of strings & head and banjo brand you are going to play and what banjos have nylon or gut strings or metal and weather the strings are light or medium , those kinds of things are important to us..
