Yeah... FF VI went all in with characters, development and storytelling. Despite being chibi miniatures, they had so much personality... I love it. Also, GBA version changed it to "love-starved twit", which actually fits her character arc even better
Locke is her hero and beloved, just like the lyrics of the opera. It was Locke who saved her, and made her feel human, not a war machine. Their love story is the best in the series.
I’m in the middle of playing this game. The moment Celes lost Cid, learning the world was destroyed, thinking all her friends might be gone, climbing the mountain and falling off the cliff committing a suicide attempt... ...I started to fall in love with this game...
The first time i played this game many years ago, I thought the events prior to the part you mentioned would be the final one! Boy that twist was nasty! you end up with nothing and in destitute, you will have to build yourself up again to recover all the strength you built!

I don't know, but suddenly bringing him back to life kinda ruins the moment for me. Don't get me wrong, I like Cid, but keeping him dead just feels more real.

It's almost like his survival was thrown in as a token 'good' outcome.

God this song... It makes me tear up as you realize it being Celes's theme just fits on so many levels... It isn't just a tragic sounding song about a woman who was raised to be a weapon with little choice, doing acts she now regrets. It's a love song, a love song for a man she believes she could never be with. A love song for the world she wishes she could partake in. A love song for the life she wish she could have had. Celes is truly one of the greatest written characters not just in Final Fantasy but all of RPGs. Her arc and everything is done beautifully... I'm so glad I played this game
Well said! Her story is the most interesting in the video game as well as in the anime world. Her struggles and suffering both physically and emotionally are real. Despite these she's the driving force of the group in the world of ruin. VI is such a great game, wishing it could be remade 🙏
What I always thought was interesting was that Celes was originally intended to also be crazy due to having been turned into a Magitek Knight like Kefka, only she wouldn't have been sadistic or malicious. Although that personality type was removed from the game, her sprite still acts like him at points in spite of the fact she's supposed to be cold and reserved through most of the game. She cups her hand to her mouth and gasps in shock every time a battle starts, similar to how Kefka's sprite does. And she tends to strike little poses like him from time to time too. (The big one that comes to mind is that when you're in Owzer's Mansion and remark: "Celes looks like Maria?", she blinks for a moment, but then strikes that little "Hey, look at me!" pose.)
I remember when Celes jumped crying from the cliff after the world´s end (i was almost on tears too). I shouted "Celes!!! No!!!!". Gosh, i loved that girl

I was 13 years old when I first played FF6 and got obsessed over it... I'm still not over it. Without nobuo, these games wouldn't be so special as it's really only the music that made you feel the story.
It's funny, I never realized the full similarity of Kefka's situation to Sephiroth's. Kefka is far more insane, though, and IMO, more of a victim of circumstance (even though Sephiroth is as well)

I was about 6 or 7 when I played this game. So I guess I didn't understand the depth of reasoning when she jumped off the cliff. I just thought she she was really sad for cid and expressed her sadness that way..... Hits way different when you truly understand.
This song makes me sad....Likely as this plays when Celes one of my favorite characters from the game tries to take her own life...And honestly it wasn't a pathetic overly dramatic Suicide attempt for something odd, and it wasn't the character not going threw with it. She jump off the clif of complete hopelessness , the only one she new that happened to live was gone. It is indeed one of the sadist moments of video games

The original version was much, much darker. This is the fan translation from Japanese: "Cid: There were others on this island when I came to, but they're all dead now. One died quickly, the other went mad and killed himself, another died of sorrow, one drowned himself, and the last jumped off the cliff at the North Cape." That is brutally hopeless and such a mature concept for a video game at the time. I dare say the emotional impact of this scene would be much greater than Aerith's death if I played the fan translation instead of the US version.
For me, that scene was the saddest one ever in all Final Fantasy games, way more than Aerith's death scene (which makes the 2nd). While Aerith knew her destiny and unexpectedly died, she still had hope and gave the strength to Cloud and the other characters. Here is way more sorrow: it's about someone completely giving up on hope, which is even worse than death itself.

Ever since I learned how that part of the game works, I've always been torn - The story is much more emotional if Cid dies (and because that's how my first playthrough went, I consider it the "proper story", but I feel like a monster if I cause it intentionally for that end.
Celes is one of the most pitiful characters in FF, she's endured so much pain, not only mentally but physically too... who knows what else the soldiers did to her T_T She's on my top 5 favorite fictional characters.
So true xD hell, we even still have people who believe the earth is flat xD But yes, if I ever had to point to 1 video game to prove they're art, this would definitely be one of my first choices.
I think the only way you can keep the magic of a game like this in a remaster is to keep it in a top-down 2d sprite format. 3D would probably destroy this game, and forcing voice acted interactions will likely ruin a lot of memories, part of the magic of these types of games is we create the narrated voices in our heads and each person has their own unique experience associated with the characters and story. When you go for "realism" in a remaster, as FF7 has done, you lose a lot of that charm that typed dialogue allows your mind to express on its own.
If this game releases on ps1 instead of snes before this game might be quire popular than ff7 has right now... Kinda sad though square enix never give some extra content on this game like they did in ff7 with this today graphics gen I'm still hoping for remake thou.

I am stunned at how massively popular this game has become, same with the other old school FF's, the community is huge and passionate.
FF7 tends to get all the attention but those who know the series know that FF6 has the better story

Idk, the story is good enough on its own tbh, but the music definitely adds that little last thing that makes you truly never forget them.

Seems like kefka is inspired by lucifer. When you battle him he looks like a fallen angel.
This is still #1 of all games for me, not just in the Final Fantasy series.

Celes is one of the most pitiful characters in FF, she's endured so much pain, not only mentally but physically too... who knows what else the soldiers did to her T_T She's on my top 5 favorite fictional characters.

So true xD hell, we even still have people who believe the earth is flat xD But yes, if I ever had to point to 1 video game to prove they're art, this would definitely be one of my first choices.

I think the only way you can keep the magic of a game like this in a remaster is to keep it in a top-down 2d sprite format. 3D would probably destroy this game, and forcing voice acted interactions will likely ruin a lot of memories, part of the magic of these types of games is we create the narrated voices in our heads and each person has their own unique experience associated with the characters and story. When you go for "realism" in a remaster, as FF7 has done, you lose a lot of that charm that typed dialogue allows your mind to express on its own.
The xylophone sounds too high for me, needs to be an octave lower. Still loved it though, such a beautiful piece of music
If this game releases on ps1 instead of snes before this game might be quire popular than ff7 has right now... Kinda sad though square enix never give some extra content on this game like they did in ff7 with this today graphics gen I'm still hoping for remake thou.
