Awesome video, I love when you cover topics not typically included or paid attention to, even by anarchists. Would love to hear more about non-Euro/American anarchists.
An *excellent* video. I find it really interesting that He Yin Zhen was exploring a sort of proto-intersectionality and gender constructivism so far back! It's a shame she doesn't get recognition for it, as those are theoretical developments that many anarchist movements have struggled with in the past and still sometimes struggle with today. I also appreciate your inclusion of her erm...questionable views on sex work and sexuality in general. Very insightful and I look forward to more videos about non-western anarchism.
Hi I'm Chinese here and I've never heard of her either... Thanks for the informative content! But on a side note, I believe "He" is her last/family name, and "Yinzhen" the first/given name, Chinese names just work differently.
Thanks for this video on the anarchist-feminist theory of He-Yin Zhen. I'm looking forward to your future videos on various anarchists from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Weird that I've actually heard of her and read portions of that book you showed. Too bad I've finished my degree now and can't access academic literature anymore.
This is why I want to learn Chinese! There are so many leftist Chinese thinkers and activists who we in richer countries never hear about. Which book would you recommend to read of He-Yin first?
this is just amazing! I just came to know her this morning! I'm native Chinese and I have never heard of her! Due to her husband's controversial position during the nationalist revolution in the 1910s, she and her husband were sort of seen as traitors of revolution and her voices became marginal. But gradually as the feminist movement is becoming more and more influential in China now, people start to rediscover her and her writings. I literally just listened a Chinese podcast about her and then searched about her on youtube . Thanks for this video!
I saw how the LSF put up reading recommendations on their instagram, and at the top of the feminist section was her feminist manifesto, didn't know anything about her up until now and wow!
Thanks for another great video, I just wanted to mention that it would have been nice to hear the accurate pronunciation of He-Yin’s name, as you pronounced “He” like the pronoun “He” but it’s actually pronounced like ‘Huh’.
Yesterday on the news I saw they have a new portrait to commemorate Norway's first female MP in 1911. Exactly the kind of liberal feminist victory Hé-Yīn critiques here. Relevant political points 100 years later! Great video Zoe!
10:07 Great points!!!I I can't quite elborate butThat kind of reminds me of mad max fury road as "the question who kill the world?" It obviously refers to immortal joe and his war body Valhalla death cult false consciousness: and how everybody and everything were immortal joe's private property, while some like war boys oppressed by immortal joe while help him maintain his system. As many people in the waste creates and adopts role and identites to cope with it, they immerse themselves into the chain of conquest and oppression while unable to how that made them part of of it and failed to find a way out.
Great work and video , on a side note this is King Jon ☺️ I'm sorry for the New look but my channel got suspended and I'm making a appeal to get it back so this is my new channel temporarily till I get that channel back.
Really cool video! Just wanted to say that the nan nü is pronounced more like nan nyu rather than nannu. Love to see anarchist feminists on the channel
Love the video and your work more generally, it’s super important and interesting to learn about non-Western perspectives on anarchism. I do have one critique of He-Yin’s approach, which is that she seems to confuse feminism (the abolition of patriarchy) with the liberation of all women. The two are closely intertwined, but she fails to argue that. She is of course correct in saying that the state would be just as oppressive if its power were shared equally by women as by men, there’s no doubt about that. However, if we take only her critiques of the state and ignore those of all others, the state is not patriarchal when its power is shared with women. It still oppresses women, but in their role as citizens, not as women (at least insofar as we ignore the intersection between the state and economic forces). She fails to argue that the state is inherently patriarchal regardless of the position of individual women. To put it another way, she argues that anarchism is inherently feminist, but not that feminism is inherently anarchist. I hope I’ve explained myself clearly?
Usually when we say the liberation of women we mean that goal will be achieved by abolishing patriarchy. And I don't know much about her country, but in the rest of the world countries with a higher share of women in power, and with more gender equality in general, have less rates of poverty and violence and are happier. Scandinavia case in point. So I'm a grander sense, sharing power with women eases oppression greatly.
Btw is this referring to laws in China or in Japan? --> "laws which dictated that when a man committed a crime the punishment would be applied not only to the guilty man but also to the innocent women within his household"
Their where also many chinese Anarchist during the period of the Communist revolution in China also there is some thinking of some Taoist going against Confucian doctrine and where proto Anarchism though I don't like calling that cause the people at the time wouldn't call it that.

A lot of her writing sounds similar to Öcalan's work in Liberating Life. Very fascinating stuff!

Thanks. Her original family name was "He" and she then changed it to "He-Yin" to include her mother's maiden name. Her first name was Zhen.
gender abolitionism discourse in the early 1900s? so amazing

@@anarchozoe Thanks
is He-Yins theoretical understanding of the development of patriarchy supported by the historical record of china?
pretty much. but the chinese anarchists def were influenced by modernist thinking from europe and japan.
I like her critique of lustfulness, we need more of it on the Left.
Yeah it’s refreshing. Some leftists are so sex positive, almost to a fault.

Sounds very much like Ocalan writings

I say she was born in 1884.
