Great reaction. Heavy stuff today. 😁
I think you are too harsh with Elenor. Look at it from her point of view. Vane kills her father, with whom she got along properly for the first time. And then Vane tells her a story of her father's renewed betrayal of her. A story that we have never seen ourselves. So it is at least possible that he lies to save his life, although not probably for us. The bottom line is that Elenor has a dead father with his head on a spit killed by Vane. It all depends on whether we believe him or not.
You will experience this way of storytelling again later.
Vane in this case I would believe this story here now.
If John Silver were to tell me such a story, it would be highly questionable.
Credibility is the magic word of the whole series.

The show's co-creator/writer said their one rule for character death was that it had to create more story than it ended and I love that because there are no deaths simply for shock value that are quickly forgotten. Ever piece of this story matters. I can't express enough how much I love it.

The hanging of Charles Vane is one of the most haunting scenes I've ever seen. The overlaying of the pastors speech while Vane is being brought to the stand, his cold emotionless stare at Eleanore, him walking off the wagon himself, and then the pirates pulling him down to make it go quicker gives me goosebumps and tears me up every time. Billy is absolutely right, Charles knew this would start the revolution, and that's why he shook his head at Billy. What an episode, and somehow the next one is even better.

It's also one of the best character arcs in the show. Not even 2 episodes ago, Vane was convinced that Nassau was an island full of "weaklings and ingrates" who would turn their backs on their oaths for just a bit of money. But after being convinced to fight for what he felt was important (the freedom of his home), he decided to try his hand at turning those same weaklings. He gave a speech to try and galvanise their will to resist the occupation, giving his life in the process, in the same vein as Flint or Silver. We've never seen Vane use words to change the shape of the world in the same way Flint or Silver would, but in this instance he did. He saw the bigger picture and for the first time decided to use these final moments to not fight his way to an outcome, but to convince others to do it. Charles Vane is truly a stunning character, masterfully crafted and executed (excuse the pun) by the writers.

The scene in the cell was indeed intense and heartwrenching. I feel like Vane signed his own death warrant by revealing the truth about Richard Guthrie to Eleanor, and he knew it. He knew she couldn't accept that truth, even though she knew he was telling the truth. No matter how contentious her relationship with her father was, deep inside she always wanted to prpve herself to him and impress him.
When she was yelling "You're deformed, unformed...(...) missing all that takes shape through a mother's love...no capacity for forgiveness, for compromise", I felt she was really talking about herself. She projected the hell out of everything she hates about herself and her past onto Vane. "Nassau has moved from you, and so have I".
And she is projecting all her hopes for a clean slate and an idealized bright future onto Rogers, who is telling her things she wants to hear, instead of uncomfortable and painful truths.

  • @thalia7223
    @thalia7223 2 роки тому +33

I only noticed on rewatching that Vane is crying at the end of that scene in the cell with Eleanor. The first time I watched the show, I really bought into the whole vision of Vane sold by Eleanor -- that he was just a total macho pirate and angry to his core, but it really strikes me in rewatching that everything she says to him in the cell has specifically been refuted in this season. She says he has "no capacity for compromise, nor instinct toward repair, nor progress," but those things are all we've seen from him this season. Choosing the greater good of Nassau over his personal history with Teach, over his personal history with Flint, even with his history as a slave. He's the character most dedicated to progress, repair, and compromise. Almost every single line Eleanor says in this whole episode is an outright lie, whether she knows it or not, and this episode really feels like her rise as a villain.

Charles death really reminds me of Ragnars death in Vikings when he got executed in Wessex knowing his sons would avenge him. Charles getting executed here knowing his crew will avenge him. The sacrifice for revenge!! In my opinion that’s one of the most legendary ways to go out.

True, Mr Guthrie would have betrayed her but at this point there's too much history between her and Vane for her to even believe him. Up until Charlestown Vane was doing everything to undermine her and Flints plan, whatever changes he underwent she wouldn't know because she's been in a jail cell. It really is tragic because I believe they both care about each other. Losing Vane and Mr Scott in the same episode was just too much

What I liked about this episode was the insight into Vane's thinking whilst he was in the cell. The way he spoke of Eleanor disregarding everything she had learned of her father, whom she knew to be a self-serving manipulator, just to gain his approval. The way he spoke of regret and how atoning to one's misdeeds is personal rather than something that requires a mediator like a priest.
Personally, I don't much care for martyrs so the whole hanging to rally the crowd for some sort of uprising seems a poor justification to give up. That said I don't think Billy would have succeeded either way, so not attempting a poorly planned rescue was still the right decision. I think Vane realised how fruitless any rescue attempt was and just tried to make the best of a bad situation by speaking his mind. Having him step off the platform is also a great touch that stays true to his character as a fearless man who would wish to leave on his own terms.

Eleanor is one of my favorite characters from this show. The thing is, I always felt that her relationship with Vane was always going to end this way.
And they both knew it. So when he said what he said in that cell it was just more of the same. And the harsh reality that again she was faced with
nothing but betrayal from her father, a truth she deep down probably always knew... her resolve super quickened to be done with it all. And I think
Vane let her beat on him cos he knew it was over. Their lives had come full circle. This show is just that deeply written. And her choice to have
Vane hanged then and there was more a show of absolute loyalty and love for Rogers than any kind of vengeance against Charles. He ended up
being the sacrifice she needed to prove to Rogers that she was 100 percent his girl. Above her truest love and even above Nassau.
She truly believes Rogers is her future. And she's deeply devoted to him. To be fair I thought the first time I watched that it was going to be
another Carolina rescue but I'm happy it ended that way for multiple reasons. Not every fairy tale has a fairy tale ending.

It's been clear from the start what her intentions are, not sure why anyone says she flip flops. She's actually been the most consistent character, there was never going to be a happy ending with Vane as you said. What they both want are in opposition of the other, Vane's resolve to never

Cos everyone wants to take it from you and leave you on your back in that brothel. Or force you in to a marriage and you lose everything. I believe she truly loved Vane. But he was that predictable bad boy pirate you could only rely on to make you look bad. And that's what drew her to him. Not his power of his passion and willfulness. His rebel nature from servitude. traits he helped manifest in her as well. It was an unhealthy bond. I believe she loved her father, even though he treated her so bad. She def loved Mr. Scott. She loved Madi. And in the end it's pretty clear she loves Woodes Rogers and would do anything, even hang Vane to prove it. The problem is, she knows what's coming. While everyone else goes about their daily squabbles and BS. She knows what Spain will do to Nassau and not even Flint is stopping a moment to see the real picture cos they are all so bent on their own issues. Spain doesn't care. Spain will remove Nassau from the map for their gold. And she's the only one, besides Max that sees the real big picture. return the gold or suffer Spain.

I would phrase it differently and say she is a goal oriented person who's ambition gets the best of her. Interpersonal relationships do mean something to her but not as much as her life goals. It's a very human flaw that many people have. She didn't throw Max away, Max was asking her to leave behind everything she had been working towards (building a prosperous Nassau) was an unrealistic request to say the least. Both she and Vane loved Eleanor more than she loved them and honestly that was their own mistake. Vane even said he was warned about her but ignored the advice. The only real commitment Eleanor made until end of S2 was to Flint and their vision of firstly an independent, then legitimate Nassau. People forget she stayed loyal to her original partner and never wavered. It's completely understandable why she fell for Rogers, he stopped her execution and has given her everything she's always wanted.

He had his issues but I love his backstory and he was never one to murder his best friend like Flint or screw over his crew like early Silver. He was the most piraty pirate/captain in my opinion whilst always being true to his word, loyal to a fault he was. Also Eleanor's claim that he is a hypocrite about staring an enemy in the eye or whatever is BS, Vane literally gave her the option to walk back through the gate for his forgiveness but she chose to make an enemy of him. Vane choosing to die for the cause, walking off the cart himself was incredible.
