Hi there, like you I've been a lifelong fan (since '77) but I'd say like you a fairly new or padawan serious collector(since 2019).One thing I love about your videos is your enthusiasm and just genuine approach to this crazy love we have for Star Wars.I love that a huge focus of your collection besides vintage Kenner is Ahsoka, I too have a similar passion,I collect mostly Vader,Anakin being her former master obviously. I'm also new to writing comments as I usually just watch and observe but found your channel very refreshing! So again as a lifelong fan like you (turning 50 next month)keep up the amazing work and I too have a Mrs. Padawan and she encourages, nurtures and supports my passion like yours does of all things Star Wars and may the force be with you, always!!
Hey Sam! Thanks for your awesome comment! It’s amazing that we re-find our love for these figures later on it life and that spark is still there. It definitely brings back memories of a simpler and happy time in my life where We find comfort in our toys and maybe that missed feeling is why we do it today? I’m glad you have a Mrs Padawan! It really makes it more fun when a loved one can be there to experience your joy. Even though they may not be as enthusiastic about it, I think it’s love when they share in your joy. Thanks for finding the channel and I hope to see you on the next journey! If you’d like to join the Padawan Academy on Facebook and show your collection off, please do! Thanks for watching and MTFBWY
Loved this episode. It's great to have everyone on the same page when it comes to terminology and descriptive words in regards to MOCs. I got my little book a couple weeks ago from Read Five & was completely impressed about the layout and how easy it was to identify the different card back versions once you learn the simple system. As they noted in the opening of the book, the book isn't meant to be a direct read-through, but a reference for people identifying their card backs. I really enjoyed reading through the book despite it being just a guide, and realizing just how many different backs there are. I haven't had an opportunity yet, but I'd like to go through and identify my entire 150+ MOCs. Should be super fun. I remember 20-25 years ago collectors saying that price stickers would affect the grade of the card, so many folks were removing these price tags & damaging the cards. I'm so happy that today graders definitively say that having vintage stickers / price tags on the figures does not affect the grade if they have not been tampered with. Well they might not make the card more attractive or desirable, at least people aren't trying to remove them now for trying to get better grades. The Read Five book is definitely a "must have". I absolutely can't wait to get their big book!!! Seeing how awesome this mini guide is, I can only imagine how amazing the big book is going to be. #ReadFive Thanks for this wonderful overview Joey!
I have been collecting action figures since the beginning. While I opened those early figures I kept the card in a scrapbook. It did not take long for me to start keeping figures on the card. Really liked watching you go over all the various terms.
Pre watch comment I only collect MOC’s at the moment if it was a childhood figure. Right now several of the 12A SKU Footers are too expensive for me to justify as they represent a mini-vacation, home improvement job, or something else that both the wifey and I would deem urgent. I was born in 77 so I would have never owned a MOC Star Wars. That leaves ESB and later. My first MOC when I started seriously collecting was a 32 back Yoda. This is the first Star Wars toy I remember getting from my mother. Not only that, but I even remember my Grandmother telling my mother that that figure may be a choking hazard and me saying that I’m not going to eat it. So the figures I have a memory of owning are my MOC focus. That Yoda was especially poignant because my mother passed away last year due to Covid-19 Delta. This event is what made me go down memory lane preparing for the memorial and opened the door to collect. But I’ll save that for another day. Amusingly the MOC I picked up was one that the cardboard footer fell into the plastic channel. I actually reached out to John Rula (Action Figure Grader) who gave my some tips to try and gingerly get the footer back in place. I’ll post images in the super secret Facebook group* of the before and after on that. *Not that secret. ;)
Thanks for sharing that story Joe, I already responded on the Padawan Academy of my thoughts on this so I won’t be repetitious, but to say that it’s these stories that makes collecting not only a hobby, but a healing process for a lot of us. God knows that I’ve used this as a means for healing in some aspects of my life and it’s like that for many of us so that you for sharing that story my friend.
Wowww carnal this video was the holy grail of videos I needed to watch now I have alot more knowledge on not buying random toys and looking out for those valuable toys I need thanks so much now I know what I have and my collection is Amazing 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
12 back A is the only one that says "Collectors Action Stand" on the bottom. The B & C says "Action Collectors Stand",and there's a bold face word "FREE"👌😉, C has a smaller directions paragraph on how to use the lightsaber (because it didn't double telescope anymore).👍Watch out for the waffle print too, some fakers are starting to do that also, but I always can tell😁Your Jedi master will always be with you.✊😎#RedFive
It's always been my understanding after 35+ years of collecting, mainly vintage Diecast that the term "Mint on card" or "Mint in box", refers to the item inside, not necessarily the card/box itself, love your show bro, keep it up! ;-)
The 12 backs also have different wording on the bottom. They both mention 2 proofs of purchases but the one mentions getting it free with 12 proofs of purchases also. Great video!
MOC is Mint on Card referring to the figure itself NOT the cardback. The figure is Mint on Card. The bubble doesn’t even need to be fully attached. MOSC is a Mint on Sealed Card -meaning card is in any condition cardback. Figures is Mint. Bubble is sealed and intact. MOMC is a Mint figure on a Mint Cardback. I know it’s not you, Joey. You know this isn’t a dig at you -you are just doing research with what’s out there, but what’s out there is incomplete for some reason. modern collector websites and some books either leave so much information and knowledge out and just toss it aside or they just plain have it wrong. I been collecting Kenner for 40 years. The nomenclature above is how it’s always been. If common folk are using MOC for a catch all, then it’s like a person saying Xerox for making copies. People who are truly in the know, know MOC only refers to the figure itself and not the cardback being Mint. -and the other designations are what should be used for various conditions on the cardback itself.
That’s a great point John! And in an earlier video I do explain those terms, and at ONE point those terms were in the script of this video but here is why I chose to leave them out: modern collectors and even old school collectors and grading companies are moving away from using MOSC and MOMC more and more and just using the streamlined MOC vernacular with the same terms combined in all of them. I did see those terms in websites and on some FB groups but 1 mentions in a binder per. So I can see term being shifted into MOC to cover a variety. But I can see your point and it’s probably something I should have added, but I think vernacular changes in a hobby are a good thing and with so many new people, like me, coming into the hobby, we often adopt what the mass popular terms are, and at this stage of collecting, MOC seems to cover the above. There were several other terms that I had written in this script and I actually did record then, but the video used to be 35mins long so I cut a great deal of footage out. Too long for the average bear to sit through lol. I really should go back and add that terminology one day, but less and less collectors are using it these days so I guess I am going with the trends of what I’m seeing even from seasoned collectors? Thanks John for the insight!
@@thepadawancollectorofficial I realized why the change happened. it’s eBay. hands down. What happened was people trying to sell a carded figure had an issue. Some ppl would only search MOC and not MOMC of MOSC. So a lot of sellers started putting all three terms on their listing title. Many of the resellers found themselves running out of space and eventually everyone went to just using MOC cause it would capture the most buyers when they are searching. So really, we have eBay and resellers to thank for the terminology moving to only using MOC as a catch all.

Thanks John! Yea I look at some of the prices of the MOCs and I really can’t afford them. I think that’s why I’m collecting most of the ROTJ cards right now as they seem to be the most affordable. I’m at 40 right now. Probably 5 more that I feel I absolutely have to get sometime. I doubt I’ll ever get a full set with prices the way they are these days. I have one version of Luke, Han, Leia, R2, 3PO just cause they are so expensive. I figure one example of the main characters is good for the collection for now.
40 is a great number man!!!! That’s way more than any average or seasoned collector has! I find that most collectors who have that many have been collecting since the early 90s and caught them before they exploded when the prequels reinvigorated vintage collecting. Great collection John! #ReadFive Great episode! MOC are a different game… preservation is key. I had a beautiful MOC TopToys Vader, the bubble detached from the card… now I have a mint loose figure a card an a bubble… 😩 here is a pitch: an episode about collectors little sad stories 😂
Hey Rocket City! I can’t wait for that book! I’m on the waiting list too! It’s going to be amazing!!! Can’t wait to do a review video on that one! Thanks for watching my friend and good luck!
Really interesting video. Ive always been too scared to go into MOC as there is so much to learn. Ive recently decided that once i finish my full graded run im doing an ewok focus including moc's finally. They just look so cool with the original artwork and i need some in my collection. #ReadFive
You talked about repro MOC's but the one thing you forgot to mention are Toy Toni MOC's as these are not repro because original cardback and original figure but not factory sealed and the figure is not always the correct one for the cardback it's put inside the bubble
Great episode sir! Now that you are my Padawan collector mentor I have a question. Is it best to keep the item on its card to have it graded or remove item from the card and have it graded? I have two 77 card backs (Rancor Keeper & Prune Face) and two 79 card backs (Nikto and 8D8. Thank you! 🙏🏼
hey Javier! I would never remove a figure from a card back unless the card is unrecognizable as a card :). I’m more of a preservationist, though. So I would hunt for the best looking MOC in your price range and go for that. So I would grade MOCs that you think would score a 70 or above and the ones that are trashy just keep as display pieces. That’s me though. Thanks for watching my friend
#readfive.,.was it supposed to be #redfive? Any way book is very cool with nice choose your own adventure approach to book. Not a moc collector but who knows..if I win book might start a new adventure 😀. You's da force dude
I had 70 plus figures on the card most of which i got at a mom and pop shop in the early 90s for 4 bucks each including a droids boba fett i foolishly sold them in 05 recently decided to try and buy them back it’s shocking what i let them go for and what they are worth now i’m only 9 deep but determined to at least get all the guys and hero’s in jabbas place
Not all mint on cards have the waffle pattern. I bought a made in Mexico Darth Vader and it was smooth with the hole on the back where it says Return of the Jedi in the o of the word of, not a lily lady but a maid in Mexico.
Thanks DMR, that’s why I’m the video I made sure to say “I am going to focus on the US release of the MOCs” because I knew the variants of the cards and how they were assembled.
Interesting, I’ve only got 3 tru carded figures and got scammed on 2 more not really knowing plus I should of asked more questions, this would help out a lot #Redfive

Hey Dan! An Ewok focus would be sooo much fun! Thanks for watching and good luck!

#readfive never win but give it a go... just starting the MOC studdy
Good luck on your MOC run Brian! And good luck in the contest! Thanks for watching
You talked about repro MOC's but the one thing you forgot to mention are Toy Toni MOC's as these are not repro because original cardback and original figure but not factory sealed and the figure is not always the correct one for the cardback it's put inside the bubble

Love your Video's Joey!
Thanks Mike! Thanks for watching and good luck my friend!
@@thepadawancollectorofficial Thank you for the advice sir I will do just that!
#readfive.,.was it supposed to be #redfive? Any way book is very cool with nice choose your own adventure approach to book. Not a moc collector but who knows..if I win book might start a new adventure 😀. You's da force dude
Hey Freak! The name of the company who wrote the book is ReadFive Designs so the hashtag is correct :). Thanks for watching and good luck!

Thanks Deano! Thanks for watching and good luck!
I had 70 plus figures on the card most of which i got at a mom and pop shop in the early 90s for 4 bucks each
including a droids boba fett
i foolishly sold them in 05
recently decided to try and buy them back
it’s shocking what i let them go for and what they are worth now
i’m only 9 deep but determined to at least get all the guys and hero’s in jabbas place
Hey Blue! Wow that’s awesome that you had that many on card! Good luck with your collection journey my friend!

Dang, I remember I could've bought these on clearance after the trilogy was over, could've bought them and made a fortune.
Hey Lama! Yea when I saw these as a kid I didn’t think they were Star Wars toys cuz I didn’t see them in the movie haha! Now I think they are awesome!

Hey Sean! Man, sorry you got scammed! Yea even when out in the wild I have to be in the look out as most seller at stores just buy and place on the shelf without examining what they are selling. Thanks for watching my friend and good luck!
