The son (the current emperor) is a spitting image of the father.
The Emperor abdicated because of the Tsunami that destroyed much of northern Japan. He felt that it was his responsibility and realised that he was not young or mobile enough to handle it. All in all, I really liked this Emperor a lot and wish him all the health and happiness.

Very practical for an old emperor or king to abdicate the throne to his successor. That way they will have a young strong leader with sharp mind and will evade the drama, fight and war others monarchies have when their king/emperor dies and different successors start fighting and dividing the empire/kingdom.
I think he’s the first ever Japanese emperor to abdicate the throne, all others died before the next succeed.

This is modern era and i hope they're change the succession and women can rule. The Princess Toshi will become first Empress of the modern age.
The biggest problem will be the spouse. The royal family doesn't accept male outsiders since males tend to be dishonest.
Not to mention that the line of sucession has already been determined to go through Hisahito. The rule change shouldn't be retroactive
Unfortunately that may not happen as the Princess Toshi was passed over in favour of her cousin, Prince Hisahito, who is now 2nd in line. Before he was born, the government were actually considering changing the law. But if Hisahito doesn’t have any sons when he is grown, then the succession will be threatened again

It dates back to the politics of the Meiji Restoration that is why he is wearing western clothing. Japan wanted to be seen as a modern country. He did wear the traditional outfit when he was reporting his abdication to Amarastsu.
