He destroyed the crystal trapping him, absorbed the fire magic trapping Krile into his own body, then took on ExDeath single-handedly, surviving round after round of attacks through sheer willpower and determination to save his granddaughter and friends, and WON. Galuf was a true hero.
One thing I love about this scene and what makes it extremely powerful: The heroes just don't sit back and watch Galuf die when he's about to, they try EVERYTHING - Curaga, Raise, Phoenix Downs, Elixirs - Yet none of them work as Galuf fades away. He overworked himself during the fight against Exdeath that the healing methods you've been using through the game up till that point probably straight up don't work anymore. He's truly gone, and it hurts to see.
That part really struck me too. In other FF deaths, there's no mention of these, which only makes Galuf's death a bit more impactful (at least as FF lore is concerned)

@@youngtruth77 then why didn't cloud revive aerith after sephiroth stabbed her? In ff the dead can't be brought back just by anyone it takes powerful magic.
@@youngtruth77 This video is actual proof you don't die when your HP reaches 0 though. Galuf's death was powerful and perfectly executed, Aerith was only killed because they "had" to kill someone, what hurts the most considering that in terms of skill set you can immediately replace Galuf but you never get another OP healer like Aerith. Galuf did make Exdeath retreat, Aerith cast Holly and even after being killed she used the lifestream to push meteor allowing Holly to destroy it (I doubt it was out of spite since she was really kind hearted and well tempered).
