    First fish Mangrove snapper, second fish was a Jack Crevalle, third was a Grunt, fourth Yellow Grunt, fifth Tarpon, and last was a shark or even a giant Manta Ray. You don't want to anchor while you fish on a Kayak, if you hook a large shark and takes you to board side, he will push you and the kayak into the water quicker than you can think. yours truly, a Big Pine Key resident and avid fisherman.

      What about drag control... Seems like catfish kayak would know a thing or two about really tightening or loosening drag from ⚓... But I don't know... Maybe he would have been sunk or maybe he has patience and intuition on what to do. Me on the other hand being an inexperienced angler wouldn't be on anchor, but seems like he had a ton of line to let fish run.

    One thing I’ve learned the hard way, when you’re going after the saltwater predators. You have to make sure that braid is tight as humanly possible when you spool it. Other wise you lock down the drag and it does what it did to you.

    • @matthewmercer2477
      @matthewmercer2477 Рік тому

      Seriously doubt it was a Tarpon, no jump no tarpon. I fish in a tarpon club and have seen many many landed, 99% will jump. Having fished the keys quit a bit I would bet maybe a big hammerhead, they fight like no other and tend to run straight . My second or 3rd guess is a goliath or a giant brown turd/ nurse shark. Good job fighting.

    You launched at my favorite kayak launch area. I use the ramp on the other side of Overseas HWY when I launch my boat. There are a lot of great fish in that area. I would bet that the two big fish that you hooked up were big nurse sharks or goliath groupers. Those are the usual ones that drag a kayak around and like to break lines.

    • @SSHitMan
      @SSHitMan Рік тому +1

    I fish the Gulf about an hour south of Tampa in a Tarpon fishing club. Early in the season we use mullet, later when it warms up it's hard head cats or we be fighting sharks every cast. Mackerel are 100% the best bait for sharks. If I use chunk bait I will not use wire, I don't want to handle big sharks. 40-60lb mono works. If it's smal you can get them, much bigger they cut you off. Win win. When It comes to sharks, NOTHING compares to a hammerhead fight, it's just different. When it comes to cats Justin your the man, when it's everything else, my man Elias may be the best all around kayak fisherman on you tube.

My favorite fishing I've ever done and I've caught 50+lb flathead in the Ohio River.

    Flashbacks to Santiago (played by Spencer Tracy) in the 1958 film "The Old Man and the Sea". It was based on the Earnest Hemingway novel by the same name. He hooked into a giant marlin longer than his fishing skiff. It pulled him away from Cuba toward the Florida Keys. Of course, the old man actually landed the giant fish and he was using nothing but a hand line, not a tricked out Daiwa reel on a Golly Whopper rod (smile). Almost all the movie was about him fighting that fish day and night. My personal theory is that your giant fish was doing everything he could to get away from the UT hat : )

    Eagle ray. I was actually fishing the 7 that day on the marathon end, we saw several big rays free jumping which is common. I’ve caught and landed hundreds of big sharks and they don’t have that stamina, although I’m putting more heat on them from a boat. Definitely not a Goliath they are strong but have no stamina.

    • @BeetleBuns
      @BeetleBuns Рік тому

      he did keep letting pressure off it, and if you aren't putting the stick to em at all times they get stamina back real quick. Could've been either, big ray or shark, but like you said definitely not a grouper. They don't run like that.
