  • What a pleasent surprise this was. I dropped by Thailand in January to check out what's been happenning in Asia and the answer is a LOT! Thailand is growing into a world class boating destination with a huge base of skilled Thai's who are coming up through the tourist industry and moving into private yacht management.
    The owners of this stunning Riviera 78MY are benefiting from this. They are living their best boat life with two fantastic crew members looking after this absolute stunner of a boat!
    What is clearly evident to me about the 78MY is that this is a yacht that you can run fully crewed but should you choose to run it yourself for the weekend with your mates then she will be totally manageable to anyone who's owned a moderately sized Riv before. Basically if you've had a Riv you'll understand how to operate this thing.
    However as soon as you head below the interior spaces and design will knock your socks off! It's got more of a custom build feel to it and the interior textures on 'Big Mama' make her feel very special indeed!
    Thanks to Martin and his whole crew from Lee Marine for organising this special day which was not planned like one of my normal shoots. We just gathered together the cameras we had and made it happen which was super cool.
    Finally this would not have happened without cool owners who are happy for Dan the random UA-cam guy to drive your boat and put it all over the internet. Thankyou for your generosity and I hope the world enjoys this opportunity to take a peek into the world that is 'Big Mama'!
    Enjoy,
    Dan Jones

    This is hands down the best multi purpose boat out there. I think Viking can get another cabin in there by doing that bunk room, but you also have a crews quarters so the additional bunk room isn't needed.

    Great video mate - we had an Aquila 54 at Ao Po and got to know Martin well - he was very knowledgeable and gave us some great cruising tips. My only comment about keeping a boat in Thailand is beware of the weather and the detrimental effect it can have on your boat’s exterior - constant maintenance is the only solution but the Thais are great to work with. Cheers Swanny

    • @BoatLife_DansBoatLife
      @BoatLife_DansBoatLife  7 місяців тому +1

      G'day Swanny. I reckon you're onto something by having a boat in Thailand though. It's also a nice middle spot between Sydney and Europe so good if you have mates in both places as you can meet in the middle.
      Yep the conditions just seem like tropical North Queensland so regular attention would absolutely be necessary. Thai's are so lovely and also a lot more cost efficient so I reckon it would be easier to justify semi-permanent crew to keep up with the job list.
      Of all the brands I would be focusing on Riviera and some of the builders in Florida as they are already building with this in mind.

      I felt just as comfortable operating this boat as I did the smaller Riv's. That's how sensible this design is. I reckon a lot of previous Riv owners could jump stright onto this and within a short amount of time they'll be a total boss with it. Personally i'm a blue guy so the colour is to my liking but yes each to their own.

    Dan, back in '89 we sailed the yacht up from Singapore to Phuket for some R&R. 1st night in the anchorage we had dinner on the beach. It was a very good dinner, as at 4am the skipper bought a 30ft long-tail wooden Thai boat with a Yanmar diesel. We used it around the islands for a week and then picked it up with the crane and put it on the helicopter deck. We took back to the Med and blasted around the Riviera with it. Got it back to Antigua where it still lives today, tied to the hotel dock in English Harbour.
