My 14 year old daughter really found the idea of a club round really daunting with a lot of club members around. We did a number of mock shoots where we kept score with an app similar to the proper AA iScored.Today to get her used to the idea but she was still hesitant to go. We typically get 30 to 40 members to each shoot. Finally was able to get to go to one on a long weekend where there was less members around and she saw that it wasn't has daunting as she thought. In the end she had good time because between ends it's light hearted with plenty of joking around and friendly banter. Now she goes each week trying to get better scores to work on a higher classification and chasing AA awards. At our club we always have Geelong (90 @ 30M) & Newcastle (90 @ 20M) rounds on offer for the less experienced members and then have a couple of other types of rounds on offer to keep it fresh and interesting for the experienced club members.

I usually practice 3-4 times a week and normally shoot some sort of round just to make it interesting and to keep track of where I am relative to real competition level. Now that I am moving to recurve it's even more important. I looked at some past scores from recent tournaments in my area for my age group (68), so I have some idea of where I need to be before I compete...which I am hoping is next summer. It's not that you can't compete in an official tournament if you are just starting out, but it can be a bit overwhelming. For someone interested in shooting in competition I recommend starting small like NUSensei mentioned with some club or local shoots before you try something on a larger scale with possibly hundreds of archers like some of the USA Archery national events. Even shooting on your own and learning to keep score is not a bad idea either. That said, tournaments are a lot of fun and you meet a lot of great people. I am looking forward to competing again with a recurve bow. Excellent topic for a video !!

Here in Sweden, an archer can choose whether to enter in the regular "elite" divison shooting the standard WA distances, or the "senior" division which is less challenging. For a 1440 round this means 60/50/40/30 m instead of the daunting 90/70/50/30, and the round corresponding to the WA 720 is shot at a 122 cm face from 50 m away.

In Finland we have almost exclusively 70m/720 rounds. I think the reason for this is that all of these are qualification rounds to national championships and international competitions, and only 70m/720 rounds are meaningful to many people for this reason. Our association has also made the task of organizing an archery event so expensive and difficult with all kinds of demands that clubs will only organize competitions which will bring in the maximum number of archers, hence the 70m/720 rounds. Fortunately they know that there’s a problem, and are making some changes to make official rounds more accessible to more people, since there’s quite a lot of recurve archers who find the 70m distance too challenging.

TheAegisClaw for them the whole concept of target archery could be unexciting, and they could enjoy field/3D archery more.

@NUSensei I have an important question...was hoping someone could answer it for me. I have an older recurve bow(it's one solid piece of wood. I ordered a bow string for it and I have ordered the wrong freaking size. I made a mistake measuring it and thought the bow was 61 inches so I ordered a 57 inch string. But I previously didn't notice there was some info written on this bow. It says 62"...AGV08745...35# 28"...what the hell do these numbers mean exactly? lol pretty sure it means it's a 62inch bow...and a 28 inch draw length I'm assuming. not sure what the rest of it means. Anyone who can enlighten me and give me some answers would be greatly appreciated. Also considering it's a 62 inch bow rather than a 61inch like I previously thought, that means that I need a 58 inch string correct? also is it possible to simply use the 57 inch string I already ordered? If so what all exactly would that change exactly? I'm thinking that the 57 inch string would work but that it would only change the draw length, base height, and the speed. I'm truly just making a pure guess on that tho. Advice please lol
edit: I found out the 35# means the draw weight

I was meant to be going for my Master Bowman this year, only York or Fita 1440 rounds qualify for it. They're few and far between being the longest rounds. So with the virus, it's unlikely I can do it this season. Oh well, maybe next year.

Dang, I really don’t think more people could fit on that shooting. It actually looks unsafe to me.

Does your club ever host competitions that others can come to or even a QRE? I shoot in Geelong & would definitely come along if you were to put one on.

I think we're in similar situations: we're far too small and our member base isn't highly interested. However, we do have a handful of members who are keen and one of us is now an accredited judge, so we're able to make it happen. We'll raise this once things open up.

That shooting line is way to crowded you should have half of them on the line with the other half waiting for their shot
