A budding ski industry has sprung up in Afghanistan's remote alps, driven by a progressive Shiite Hazara minority from the impoverished Bamiyan province. They now face the menace of a resurgent Taliban.
"It's pretty surreal to be here. You have to stop for a second and appreciate the moment", says Jeff Olson, a snowboarding lawyer from Texas. He and other adventurous Westerners have traveled to Bamiyan, 250Km Northwest of Kabul, to the impromptu ski slopes run by the ancient Shiite Hazara people. Jawad Lakoo, a local Hazara man, looks on the enterprise with trepidation. He witnessed the atrocities conducted by the Taliban during their rule of Afghanistan in the 1990s. "I remember three of my uncles - they took them from their shops and lined them up with more than 300 people and shot them". Even following the US-led intervention in Afghanistan, the Hazaras live in poverty, without electricity or running water. For many, the white slopes present a new hope. "Skiing sends a message of peace and unity", says local mechanic Shah Aqa.

Makes you wonder how much potential is hidden around the world due to unequal opportunities. One of these might as well be an olympic champion if given a chance.

First of all I would like to thank you for making this documentary.
Hazara people are ignored by the UN and other international authorities and they are absolutely isolated by the central government. In the past 62% of Hazara people was killed by a Pashton leader was called Abdoruhman and he gave all Hazara people's land and wealth to other Pashtons. Afghanistan is a dictator country and we never had or have a president who is elected by people, even the current president is won by fraud.

Who wants to willingly travel there? It's like willingly traveling to North Korea only to be confined to your hotel and can't talk to anybody.

Do you know what country this is in my friend? Afghanistan. Hazaras are Afghan. Deluded ethnic nationalists like you who have ruined the country don't represent us.

Afghans can only make their country better along with a strong leader, not foreign forces. Afghans are scattered across the globe and worried about showing off their fancy cars and houses. Then shouting Long live Afghanistan in their concerts. Others are struggling to make ends meet. They have no power to help others. There's potential in Afghanistan but it will come about by Afghans themselves waking up now instead of fighting endlessly. Westerners envy the culture and hospitality of Afghans, let that be the driving force to come together and make a change.

12:14 is it common for Hazara people to eat together, men and women, while a guest is there?

    • @Potatoman1578

very common, Hazaras treat women equally with men not like some other unmentioned ethnic group who put trash bag over their women
