If I were to hazard a guess, I believe the red variation of the dark pieces is more popular because it's a more accurate representation of the original Lewis Chessmen. Red dye residue was discovered on some of the pieces, but oddly enough, I think this discovery was made after the Philosopher's Stone film was produced. Lucky guess on their part, I suppose.
The chess set that was used in the Harry Potter film was actually borrowed from Irving Finkel (curator at the British Museum). Irving acquired his red and cream chess set many many years ago when the museum sold exact replicas at their gift shop so it wasn’t a lucky guess
This is easily one of the WORST youtube promotions for this nice set! He is so busy talking, there is hardly ANY real longer, close- ups of --ALL -- YES --EACH piece! NO - you should not need to go to Regency chess-- to see the close -ups -- that is WHY you make the youtube video! I will find my Isle of lewis set somewhere else, as that seller will be more in tune with what chess players WANT to see!
the title claims it to be a black and red chess set but its actually red and white
